Given his output over the last 3 years no matter how much he is being paid by the Lions he is an end of first round compensation at best. The AFL have got this very wrong and the only question in my mind was it done to provide the noncompetitive Essendon side a chance to improve their list

Surely an organisation as ethical as the AFL wouldn't stoop that.....oh wait.... I remember the Motlop compensation that gave Geelong the pick to trade for Abblett.

That's the worst part about this incoherent free agency system. The lack of transparency lends itself to questioning. My initial thought was exactly that, they've sated the angry big club with a nice juicy carrot. Maybe they wanted to prevent a matching scenario causing a lack of fluidity with player movement I have no idea. And that's the issue. It's the AFL pinning the tail on the donkey and then telling the community they have absolute vision and clarity on the compensation.
Really is astonishing.
Almost guarantees the Crows get pick 2 for Crouch.

Adelaide will go ape shit if they don’t get pick 2 for Crouch.
Adelaide Crows midfielder Rory Atkins has joined the Gold Coast Suns as a restricted free agent.
In what marks the first move of AFL free agency, the 26-year old joins the Suns on a four-year deal worth approximately $400,000 a season, according to AFL Media.
Adelaide will receive an end of second round draft pick as compensation for the move.

I didn't originally think that but I've come around.
The compensation is a farce and does more harm than good.
It's created a scenario where clubs are almost willing certain players to leave because they get paid overs, and allows clubs to pick up players they should be trading for nothing just coz.

As I have mentioned previously, I think the club receiving the FA should cough up the compensation. Perhaps base it on points, so pick 7, whatever that equals should be made up by Brisbane.
or just scrap compensation all together
jeemak

A good way to get around it would be putting the difference in salary paid into the cap of the team that loses the player so they can then go and acquire someone good as well.
Sure it would rely on a little bit more transparency from the AFL, but it removes draft distortion and allows clubs flexibility to manage their overall TPP better as they get substantially more cash to play with to mitigate the loss.
Imagine a life where a FA system was transparent..........

We are shunted back to pick 14 now. That's a 107 point loss in the all important draft index on our first alone.
12 = 1268
14 = 1161
Crouch will push us out to 15 which penalises us another 50 odd on top of that.
This is how it looks for us after one day of FA deals.
Pick

So in total so far free agency compensation has cost us 249 points prior to Crouch deal which is equivalent to about a late third rounder. We have a pick in the late 80s too. Pick 84 which is now 89 but it’s not assigned points.
Not sure why I embarked on that process but I guess for me it highlights the drive by penalty scenario that is the current free agency model.
Considering we need all the points we can get for Jamarra it's a little more important this year. Thankfully we get the 20% discount which may balance the scales a bit in our direction.

He's an end of 1st round compensation player in my opinion. If they make the Saints use their late first rounder that might make it easier for us to offer them pick 12 (now 14 or so) for their 2 x 2nd round picks

It’s not the player who decides the compensation though. It’s the contract. You don’t get pick 7 for Daniher, you get it because someone gives him $700K a season.
I mean I wouldn’t pay Brad Crouch 5c to play on my team, but if someone gives him a million bucks a year then the compensation will reflect that. I’ve been anti-compo the whole way. It’s been a poorly implemented system from the get go and it looks sillier every year.

and clearly the Daniher deal shows why this is wrong. He is a player of immense potential who has lost 3 years of development. The reality is that he will be no better than a Jake Carlyle. He is no Buddy Franklin or Dangerfield. Handing the Bombers pick 7 is rewarding their medical incompetence and inability to motivate a player gifted to them as a father-son.
A better method would be weighting towards a) salary offered by Essendon; b) salary offered by Brisbane; c) B&F Ranking in last 2 seasons; d) games played last 2 seasons. You may weight this 50% on salary offered by Brisbane, but the other 3 are pretty important as well. The resuilt may be the same, but at least a wholistic appraisal of the player's worth has been undertaken.

Crouch would have to be on a similar deal you'd think. Basically the formula is based on the size of the club and the optics of the loss, with consideration given if club is stuffed and needs a hidden priority pick (see Frawley) or the feel good factor (see Gaddy).
It's embarrassing really.

Huge If.
How many players have publicly had mental health issues in the AFL and been anything close to good since? Mitch Clark is probably the best example (and quite similiar to Hogan, highly rated, moved clubs, had the issues, moved clubs again) and he was serviceable at best in his time at Geelong iirc.
I think the price very much reflects the likelihood that he will be a bit part player at best.

You said you prefer Young to Hannan. Young played two games this year for a total of one goal and 18 disposals? Young is no forward, but Hannan is.
I am saying Young hasn't got a spot in the team because he has players ahead of him in the backline and he is not a forward.

The plan for this year was to play him more midfield and forward. We've already added a forward and another one on the way and if you're now saying we have a surplus of defenders why wasn't this the case when we drafted him as a defender? Williams, Crozier, Wood were all defenders for us when we drafted him

If we lose Dunks, and I hope we don't, Williams will be the sole survivor of the 2015 draft.
In 2019 he trained with the midfielders before being played in the back line so perhaps we saw him more as developing into a midfielder. Young just looked to be a very versatile player for us.

But the talk of splitting Pick 8 for 19 and 21 or whatever...that would have left Carlton with - in REAL terms, 21 and 24...and neither of them would really be enough.
I think Essendon were right to stick to their guns - the guy has finished top 4 in the B&F 3x years in a row and whilst he isn't a perfect player what he does well he does REALLY well. Pick 8 really = pick 10 or 11 depending on the bids for the 2x Swans kids so it isn't that far off the mark.

I'd prefer to hold Dunkley than to see Dodoro offer us one of their firsts and a split / watered down version of their other first.
We have all the leverage here. Two low firsts, and time to do something with them, or we walk.
The key message to Dunks being we value him incredibly highly, and more than what Essendon were prepared to give up, AND we come out of this damage to our Club with some face saving.
Essendon MUST pay up for what they have inflicted on us.
I am concerned though if we do move on Dunks what the message looks to other Clubs, particularly for players coming out of contract where we don't hold anywhere near as much leverage.

Agreed, I mentioned him weeks ago. For our future second rounder I would have been keen. Would walk into our back 6 and have helped stiffen up our KPD stocks and provide potential ruck relief - 2 widely acknowledged areas of need.

I don't hate this deal for North. They can't attract a big fish and Stephenson for all of his flaws undeniably could still end up an incredible player. Plus their risk exposure of the long term big money deal would be mitigated by what you'd have to assume is a heavily front-ended deal.
Not like they were gonna be good anyway.

STEPHENSON: I actually rang Bucks and asked what was happening. He said for me to pursue a trade as heavily as I can

also
STEPHENSON: Bucks said I hadn't opened up to the group enough which I didn't really agree with. He also said there was some things he didn't like as a footballer which is fair enough because I didn't have a great year

STEPHENSON: That phone call I made to the Bucks was the only time I spoke to anyone in the heirachy at Collingwood. I did have a lot of messages from the players
STEPHENSON: Being in the hub I felt like there was no release from footy and it probably got into my head a little. Everyone's emotions were heightened in the hub

Wasn't too bad an interview by Stephenson. Words in print look worse than the spoken word. He didn't sound too bitter in the interview.

Just tweeted by Cal
Dogs have essentially traded a future second rounder for Treloar. They then swapped 14 for a stack of picks to cover the bid for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

My calculation is we gain 526 points, covering a pick 7 for JUH, and gain Treloar, and give away our pick 14 and a future second.

If they killed the PSD and make players enter the ND we might just see a fairer outcome. There's no need for the PSD anymore in any event.
