A different start this year due to the late finish of 2020.
The Bulldogs’ first to fourth year players will return to training for a two-week block from Monday December 7, while all other players will resume training on Wednesday January 6, 2021.

Hopefully we can include Josh Bruce in the first to four year bracket.......I'd like him to get some work in before hitting the Christmas period and all its trimmings.
A friend of mine actually exercises at Whitten Oval regularly, he has told me a lot of the younger players have been present doing weights and some running when he's been there, with some appearances from the likes of Macrae, Wallis and Hunter.

Coming back in January will be a good test of discipline for a number of players.
Hope the likes of Lewy Young, Bruce and JJ all come back in better shape.

Bruce is already in much better shape, check out his Instagram, few shirtless videos recently, looks like his cut out carbs completely, looking very lean.

Why would him being lean mean he has cut out carbs?

Why would him being lean mean he has cut out carbs?
Because its a common misconception carbs are bad and not actually a vital energy source.

I admire you going straight to the point. The assoiciation of all carbs are bad because sugar is a carb is proving to be problematic for society. The amount of running a footy player does would mean they'd require plenty of carbs.

I'm not sure how the post season meeting could have been anything other than critical on his output so good to see their are signs that he's working hard to hit the pre-season in good shape.
Could be like a new recruit.

No, he had a good season. Played every game except for a week to freshen up.
Many players who could have helped the team be more successful would have loved to be treated as he was.

They're professional sportsman so despite a challenging year we shouldn't accept anything less that 100% in terms of getting themselves ready for a big 2021 season. We have been too accommodating on players not performing so I really hope we are uncompromising on expectations this pre-season.

I don't disagree but I want them motivated in April not December...I don't understand why the PA fights for concessions for the players in terms of return to train and then the players come back anyway?
I would be encouraging them to take a break - look after themselves but take a break. The treadmill of the season will be there soon enough.

Everyone should have a break and recharge but it's so important that they all know they have to be prepared for a big year
If we gift games to under performing and potentially unfit players based on who they are not how they are performing we will sink quickly

I was thinking looking at those photos. If AT stayed at Collingwood, then he would've got the best opposition tagger. If Dunkley had left to Essendon, then he would've got the best opposition tagger. Now, if Bont is playing then he gets the best tagger, and arguably Macrae next. AT & Dunkley should be laughing at the freedom they'll have next year on the field at the dogs.

Ed Richards looking noticeably bigger, his put on a fair amount of muscle.
Schache has put on muscle through the arms and chest.
JUH looks the goods.
Weightman has started to bulk up but has a way to go.
Doc has strapping on the knee, not sure what's up with that?
Wood looks like his leaned up a little
Bevo could probably play round one if he wanted.
You must study the player physiques closely - I wouldn't have a clue if any of those guys look bigger/smaller than previously.
Do we have any right footers left on the list?

Already this off season I have rewatched every single 2020 and 2019 dogs game, I also follow every member on their socials and try to get down to watch training whenever possible. I might be a bit of a one eyed campaigner but that’s just because I don’t have much else to preoccupy my time thanks to corona lol.

Everyone looks "bigger" and more muscular in preseason. The players will spend more time in the weightroom than they typically do during the season when they are in "maintenance" mode. They'd also be doing less distance cardio due to not playing games. Add in more intense training sessions and much warmer weather and it's a recipe for muscular looking photos. We all like the pump we get after a weights session.
Oh and every player trains the house down preseason. I'm almost certain Jake Stringer is ready to tear the competition apart next season.

Phwoar..... I’m actually salivating at the thought of Dunkley and Treloar (in form) off the leash next year!

Not far off;
2019 was those two, Bombers game and Giants semi loss.
2020 was Eagles win (honestly, we shouldn't of won but did somehow), Geelong loss was by far the most brutal for me, even re-watching it I felt disgusted at the effort we showed in the last quarter.

A visibly bigger Tim English and a taut-and-terrific Bailey Smith stole the show at Whitten Oval as the Bulldogs resumed post-Christmas.
There’s been intense focus in previous seasons on ruckman English’s slender 206cm frame, but he’s clearly worked hard during the off-season, which he spent mostly in Western Australia.
Smith won the Dogs’ annual MAS (maximal aerobic speed) running hit-out and experienced teammate Hayden Crozier is tipping him to “take his game to the next level”.
Star recruit Treloar joined his new teammates on the track.
The ex-Magpie returned to training early, and briefly, before Christmas but will now ramp up his preparations ahead of a showdown with his former club in Round 1.
As for English, his teammates have noticed his physical maturity.
“He’s looking bigger and stronger and his golf game is getting better, too, so he’s pretty happy about where he’s at,” Crozier said.
Crozier had toe surgery on his right foot post-season that restricted him for about seven weeks, but he’s fit again, while Toby McLean on Wednesday had his first AlterG running session since his ACL rupture four months ago.
Buku Khamis was on limited duties for much of the session as he deals with a knee complaint.

From the article: https://www.scienceforsport.com/maximal-aerobic-speed-mas/
Summary
Maximal aerobic speed (MAS) is simply the lowest running speed at which maximum oxygen uptake (V02 max) occurs, and is typically referred to as the velocity at V02 max (vV02 max). MAS was developed for the purpose of increasing the specificity of training and to enable coaches to monitor training loads more accurately. There are many tests which can be used to measure an athlete’s MAS, but for many, “corrective” equations must be used to accurately determine their MAS. Coaches need to understand the differences between these common aerobic tests and the corrective equations if they are to accurately measure MAS and prescribe training based on this information.

Three players to train with Bulldogs (https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/846834/three-players-to-train-with-bulldogs)
The Western Bulldogs have been granted permission for three additional players to train with the AFL squad when they return in 2021.
Footscray’s 2019 best and fairest, Anthony Scott, is one of those players, alongside father-son prospect Ewan Macpherson and Eastern Ranges product Corey Preston.
Scott, a goal-kicking midfielder, had been elevated to the vice-captaincy at Footscray for 2020 before the season was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Macpherson, an 18-year-old small defender from the Northern Knights, is the son of 188-game Bulldog Steve and younger brother of Gold Coast Sun, Darcy. Preston is an 18-year-old small forward from Ferntree Gully.
The Bulldogs are one of seven clubs to take on train-on players as part of the AFL Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).
With the retirement of forward Sam Lloyd, the Bulldogs could elect to add a player to their list for 2021. Players who suffer season-ending injuries can also be replaced, if they are added to the inactive list.
Players can be signed as part of the SSP between Wednesday 6 January and Tuesday 9 March.

I don't buy that as an excuse.
As shown by the rounds where we picked no first ruck and just had English floating around in the side while Dunkley and co picked up the slack instead of selecting Sweet or JT we are happy to try something different in lieu of playing a shit option in their preferred position. I don't see why we were so flexible there to enable us to not play someone while at the same time were so inflexible with our forward roles that Bruce was undroppable.
Whoever replaced him didn't need to be a tall forward, it could have been anything like throwing Cordy forward, bringing Weightman or Dale or Lloyd in and playing a smaller forwardline, playing Gowers in the same role who whilst infuriating contributed just as much as Bruce did in the few games he played. We could have tried literally anything and instead we just persisted.
Taking something that wasn't working at all all season and just hoping this would be the week it would get better is dumb, and we did that for an entire season.

Bevo "rested" Boyd who was on bigger money.
JT was playing ruck and defence, and Lewis Young was terrible when given a chance. I still think if we did have a viable alternative Bruce would have played less last year.

That's a self fulfilling prophecy. We don't try anyone else and then say 'there was no one else to try'.
A fence post would have been a more viable option at times than Bruce, at least the post would have held his position and not got in Naughton's way.

Are we actually paying him that much or was it tenure that got him across the line?
Not sure the negative headlines would have been too much of an issue for us. We've dropped Stringer, Libba and T. Boyd in the past, irrespective of the negative press that would put on the club and player.
I reckon if Naughton had more of a presence earlier in the year and was around throughout most of it, and Bruce was putting up the sort of ordinary performances he was then a change may have been made. However, with Naughton not playing a fair chunk of games we may have wanted to see if they'd gel giving Bruce a reprieve.
Or not.

It was definitely tenure that convinced him to leave St Kilda as they wouldn't extend him past 2020 when we were offering 4 years. However it is reasonable to assume he is on around $500k as that is reportedly what he was on at the Saints, and it feels about right given his form prior to last season.

...why was the MC immune from criticism for selecting him regardless last season?
I was frustrated with his continued selection but I rarely comment on selection. Well - I don't think I do.
As I have said numerous times, selection is REALLY hard and I just don't know enough about what is going on at the club - particularly in 2020 with no VFL form-lines - to say much.
It was annoying at times that Bruce could seemingly do 'nothing' and be selected whilst the bar was so much higher for other players (Schache in particular). That said, I have (again, I think) been consistent in saying that when Schache was dropped this year AND it was seemingly for the same 'effort-based' issues that had seen him out of the side previously (both with us and with the Lions) I suspected he would be out of the side for a L-O-N-G time.

As misguided and cumbersome as some of his effort was, Bruce I don't think was really criticised for not having an honest crack on game day......as it was obvious he was.
I find it interesting that after at least anecdotal reports from the likes of Mofra and others around Lewis Young's conditioning and effort throughout the 2020 season and the stigma Schache carries (or Trengove's papers being stamped rightly or wrongly) that we search for reasons other than what's probably staring us in the face to understand Bruce's ongoing selection. I'm not saying it was right, rather, just saying there's probably no ulterior motive or face saving associated with it.

While I agree that at times selections might at times be difficult if you stick to the fundamentals of form and results let alone the many questions being asked about his weight and fitness I don't think a decision to drop him and make him earn his spot would have been a difficult one.
I think there is a chance we didn't want the media focusing on his omission and hoped he would work his way out of a slump

Four players to train with Bulldogs
Western Bulldogs have been granted permission for four additional players to train with the AFL squad when they return in 2021.
The Western Bulldogs have been granted permission for four additional players to train with the AFL squad when they return in 2021.
Footscray’s 2019 best and fairest, Anthony Scott, is one of those players, alongside father-son prospect Ewan Macpherson, Next Generation Academy youngster Cody Raak and Eastern Ranges product Corey Preston.
Raak is a key defender from Caroline Springs who has come through the Western Jets program, while Preston is an 18-year-old small forward from Ferntree Gully.
Scott and Preston joined the Bulldogs’ pre-season program this week, with Macpherson and Raak to join in from next week.

Peeling off and letting Membrey go up uncontested still burns. He'd crashed every marking attempt (including his own teammates) all day, then decides to hang back at a critical moment in the game.

Perhaps, although since Raak is competing with nobody it would be very disappointing if he didn't want it the most (assuming we can still add him as a category B rookie).

Don't see why we wouldn't have at least pretended to try and fix our issues and ask two good sized key defenders and two pacy small forwards to train with us.
Of the players we have training with us:
-Cody Raak is a lean and slightly undersized key defender. We already have a bunch of these guys like Cordy and Gardner. If we can pick him up as a cat B though might be worthwhile, otherwise not a high priority.
-Ewan McPherson. Mid sized defender that seems to read like a lower possession Bailey Williams. We aren't screaming out for anyone of this type but if he is good one on one and can do a defensive job while being ok going forward could be worthwhile, but not a high priority
-Corey Preston is a small forward, which is good and definitely a spot of high priority assuming he is one with genuine pace, puts on pressure and can crumb. If he is another rangy leading/marking type small forward like Dale, Hannan, Weightman, Bedendo then no thanks.
-Anthony Scott is a tallish midfielder/half forward who apparently can kick goals. Sounds good but struggle to see how we can put him on the list when we have guys like Lipinski, West and Garcia all ahead of him and none of them in our current best 22. So not an area of high priority.
Would've loved at least one profile to read:
-Magnus Nielson, 200cm key defender who is still raw with a good frame and shows a good ability to read the ball in the air. or...
-David Brent, pacy small forward who flashes in and out of games but is dangerous at ground level.

If Ewan McPherson can play as a genuine lockdown small defender then that's great as well. Besides Duryea we don't really have one.

It could be that he is a little out of shape post injury, but in one photo he is competing with Keath. With Bevo we can only conclude that he is set for a stint as a power forward/resting ruck.

New-look Dogs embrace buzz after bumper off-season (https://www.afl.com.au/news/540532/new-look-dogs-embrace-buzz-after-bumper-off-season)
THE WESTERN Bulldogs are the talk of the AFL after a bumper off-season and defender Caleb Daniel says they are embracing the excitement, rather than feeling pressure to perform.
The Bulldogs snared on-baller Adam Treloar from Collingwood in a blockbuster late trade while retaining wantaway midfielder Josh Dunkley.
They also added forward Mitch Hannan and ruckman Stefan Martin – before landing No.1 draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan in December.
"Any time you're able to recruit really quality players it really adds excitement to, not just you but, the supporters and the outside media I guess," Daniel said.
"But inside the four walls we're really excited about what the new guys are able to do for the team and what we're able to do around them.
"So they're all putting in the hard yards along with us and they're looking forward to eventually – it's coming around pretty soon – but getting stuck in to games and different things like that in competition for spots in that midfield."
Ugle-Hagan missed the Bulldogs' return to training last week after falling ill and having to wait on the results of a COVID-19 test but has hit the track this week and Daniel was confident the key forward could make an early impact.
"He just did a running test and added some skill stuff with us but you can tell how skilful he is, and he'll definitely add a different dynamic to that forward line," Daniel said.
"I'm really looking forward to getting out and playing some match sim with him and being able to find out how he goes about his business."
Daniel said Dunkley hadn't missed a beat since his proposed trade to Essendon fell through, while Tom Liberatore had been among the midfielders to impress.
He also expected young ruckman Tim English to accelerate his development working alongside experienced recruit Martin.
"It's not just that (our recruits are) quality players but they're quality people, they're going to be quality leaders and help out our younger guys," Daniel said.
"Timmy's still really young, 23, so to have Stef who's played for 10-plus years, it's pretty special."
While the Bulldogs' run-and-gun style is expected to continue, Daniel said coach Luke Beveridge had emphasised improving their defensive efforts.
An All-Australian in 2020, Daniel expected to line up off half-back again this year but could also spend time further up the ground.
