I really respect your football knowledge but is this a case of being overly optimistic as opposed to realistic?
Even when we had 9 wins and 6 losses last year we hadn't been convincing. I am convinced that we wont fall apart over the last 7 weeks like we did last year but 14 and a half wins would be on the high side in my estimation.

Can still remember seeing Rocco ready to burst into tears when Skipper put us in front.

Percentage, Percentage, Percentage. WE are not a team that wins games by large margins. Last year our average winning margin was around 26 points. Hard when you come up against teams that blow other teams out of the water.

Fair enough, so the other way around is far more likely to happen?

Makes sense.

At the same time, however, Cross is more like West than any other player on our list, yet West is a strong brownlow poller. If anything the Cross/Cooney comparison is a very appropriate comparison to West/Johnson.

It will help no doubt. I have based my predictions on Cooney having a ripper season such that he establishes himself as a to 25 player (with the possibility of going higher) in the competition.

We need an even contribution this year and we do have the ability to go very well, but it will be dependent upon our first 6 or 8 games. If we pick up some early wins and the players gain some confidence in each other, in the type of footy we need to play and in new roles they are playing then we have the talent to finish well inside the top 8.

I agree. I think people under estimate how a good start to the season can have a big impact on the players confidence.

1997 being a very good example. After a horrible 1996, we started off very well (except for Round 1 of course) and set our season up.

I think the end of the season is m ore important - case in point North Melbourne last year. In 2005 we started the season slowly and then gathered the momentum together for a purple patch towards the end of the year. Who knows how far we would have gone in the finals that year if not for White of Melbourne:(

But if you win your early games you can then put yourself in a strong position which can allow you to drop a couple of games later in the season as you should have your position in the 8 already secured. This was the case in 06 when we were 9-4 meaning over the last 9 games we only had to win 4 of our last 9 to make the finals, which we did. In 05 we couldn't allow a slip which we had against Melb which consequently meant we had September off.

Well, Aker, Hill and Willy definitely improved from last year, Higgo got injured and Andrejs.. well...

A little harsh there, it was a preseason practise match and a good guide to see where McDougall is at.

I was being a bit silly with the dunce comment, but i still think it was stupid and of no value as an experiment. Trying him on an opponent he had some chance of matching up on might teach you something, but Eade used him on Lucas instead. Instead of providing a guide, i think it wasted a chance to get a feel for where Doogs was at, because 'not a good opponent for Lucas' was a box already well and truly checked.
