According to Champion Data, the Western Bulldogs have five players that are considered elite in their position; the joint-most of any team in the competition:
Marcus Bontempelli
Caleb Daniel
Lachie Hunter
Bailey Williams
Josh Dunkley

I'm sure CD's methodology makes sense to them but when you have the likes of Motlop and Perryman rated as elite (regardless of how its segmented), there is something wrong. Hawks with more elite rated players than Richmond is also funny.

Looking at our players:
Daniel - tick
Bontempelli - tick
Hunter - half tick
Dunkley - a little surprised - the guy can't kick/isn't quick/is an ok mark.....what is elite?
Williams - quite surprised - good run, penentrating kick

Elite height.
Genuinely the only category I can think of, especially if CD sub-categorises everything within an inch of its life.

Mitch Wallis was rated elite after 2015 prior to breaking his leg as a mid. CD data doesn't watch the game, it measures it and like everything else to do with AFL statistics there's little context to support assumptions gained from them either way.
A really good addition to CD analysis would be some industry accepted/ agreed qualitative assumptions that could be used to standardise and sub-categorise the borderline meaningless statistics they produce. They actually try and do that a bit, but could do it better.
I work in a consulting field in which raw data and only a little bit of context ruins lives (I'm bullshitting, it's supply chain and logistics - not life and death, though one false number or assumption can ruin a weekend as a minimum quite often), and that's why we always produce a QQ mix (quant/ qual) to anything we present. If we didn't we wouldn't bill and we'd never be able to wrap projects up within a reasonable time or properly.
Whoever started CD and marketed them to the extent of their success is a bloody genius, because they produce shit like this and it makes them richer.

Anyway, now that I've finished ranting....for now.....there's no way that Hunter isn't elite for his role. On the eye he suffers because his shit stuff is attention to detail or simple that we know he can execute if he really thought about it, but doesn't.

A system that qualifies Mason Cox as elite and doesn't qualify Brodie Grundy is obviously flawed.
Regardless of any statistical analysis, there is no circumstance EVER that would see a fit Brodie Grundy overlooked to give Mason Cox a game.

Mason Cox @masonsixtencox
Not quite sure what the @championdata algorithm is but I can only assume it factors in height as a priority.

Caleb Daniel says this is not true. Unless of course the height factor is distance from the norm.

CD isn't perfect, it certainly doesn't measure "sacrifice for the team" which I suspect coaches would value a lot higher.
IIRC you have to be in the top percentile for your position which is why Grundy slid out after a few years of being in the elite category.
Macrae would be an example of a player considered elite to the eyeballs but not under CD measurements.

Grundy didn't have a good 2020
