This is the round 1, 2021 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once the game against Collingwood is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

3. The ruck/forward combo of English and Martin. Massive tick, and really gives scope for the coaches to adjust our game plan to a more conventional method.

2. Midfield. By and large our midfield fleet worked well both ways, and really showed some desire to defend as well as attack, more than they have in recent years

1. Our defense, Williams, Keath, Gardner and later on Duryea, Dale did some nice things and worked better as a unit.

Anchors

3. Mid to forward connection. Still so stuttery and incoherent.

2. Finishing. English, Bont standout as absolute sitters that were missed. Bont's in particular. That could've been pivotal both ways. He gets it we have snuffed them out early. He missed and they got themselves back in it.

1. that will do. I'm happy with a win.

1. Gardner - thought he has really improved, and did what was asked of him

2. Defense played well holding Coilingwood to only 7 goals.

3. Naughton long bomb goal

Anchors

1. Setshots form Bont and English - should have nailed those.

2. Stand on the mark rule and slight deviation creating two 50 metre penalties - a joke

3. Collingwood whinging supporters - complained constantly

1. the Baileys were all very good. Bailey Smith a beast. Dailey Bailey a surprise..his neat kicking out of defence will be handy. Bailey Williams has really improved as a 1-1 defender.

2. credit to Josh Bruce for coming back obviously leaner and fitter. Should have have 5 goals tonight.

3. The group showed hunger. Which hasn’t always been a feature since You Know When.

Anchors

1. We make it so hard for ourselves. That sort of contested possession differential should normally mean an 8 goal win.

2. Did Pies fans really boo Treloar? If it’s true it’s a new low in supporter idiocy.

3. The overpriced chips tasted like they’d been reheated from the last match played there with fans, ie the 2019 grand final.

1 Caleb Daniel. When he has the ball my pulse goes low. He is the Maestro, the General, the Ring Master down back and running it out of defence
2 Keath - marking spoiling
3 Bailey Smith 3 Votes. Big big game

Anchors
1 Too many blokes gun shy. Have a snap at goal instead of a hurried handball to a team mate under JUST AS MUCH PRESSURE AS YOU!
2 Too many cute kicks
3 EASY shots missed. I'm looking at you Bont.

1. The Baileys. Smith was immense, his physicality and aggression is such a point of difference. Williams is now such an assured part of our defence, love his calmness with ball in hand. Dale I was sceptical on at half back (and tbf he hasn't been tested defensively yet) but his intercept marking was great and thought he shoed great signs coming out of defence, can't see us rushing JJ back.

2. Bruce. This needs to be his baseline. A sloid contribution where he got involved with play, didn't ruin others games and actually looked capable of taking a mark. Massive improvement on the liability that took the field last year.

3. Laitham. Might be one of my facourite playes to watch. Just so much fun, he's like when you get a quick player in FIFA and just hold the sprint button down the whole time while you run at the defenders hoping the ball will somehow come with you. Him giving it to Crisp was magical.

Anchors

1. Bont. Seriously wtf. He used to be an amazing set shot.

2. Wallis. If our gameplan is going to be dominate possession and just keep pumping it into a congested forwardline with three talls then I don't see a need for Wallis. Mitch relies on getting one on one marking opportunities where he can outbody his opponent. They won't be forthcoming if we play like this. I love the guy but another reinvention might be necessary for him to keep his spot, and failing that i think a fast pacy guy would be much more beneficial to our team setup.

3. Hunter. Such a frustrating player. His good is good, his bad is embarrassing. And the bad comes out every game.

Not the traditional Bankers / Anchors format but Michael Wilson’s amazing photo of Bailey Smith in itself is a Banker as was Bailey’s great game.

Plenty to Bank

The Ruck tandem worked. It negated a player who has dominated against us. We might need to adjust it from time to time but we have finally got it right.

Keath and Gardner worked well. Both players did their jobs and while they probably need support from a 3rd taller guy in our back 6 it looks likes we can hold back on the Naughton to the back line push for a bit longer. Young and Cordy might need to be patient.

Naughton and Bruce should gain some synergies from a good outing against Collingwood. We will need them to perform well together if we are to kick winning scores

Anchor

Set shots is still an issue for us and Bont you need to do better...a lot better.

1. Midfield dominance. It was a pleasure to watch and see our mids in full flight.

2. Winning round 1. Such a good feeling for the start of the year for a change. This will be good for the players as well.

3. Stef Martin- it was pleasing to not have to worry about English getting bullied by Grundy. He kept Grundy accountable and wore him down. A team first effort.

Anchors

1. Same ole same ole forward line woes. Missed set shots terrible entries.

2. Hunter's turn overs. If JJ can't get a game for bad disposal, it should be a warning for Hunter.

It is funny how we remember one or two bad disposals and judge a player.

The stats show Hunter ran at 77.4% disposal efficiency and had two clangers

Hunter had 30 touches and Champion Data rated him in the bottom 4 on the ground.

There were surely more than 4 players worse than a guy who genuinely gut-runs every minute he's on the paddock and managed a couple of goal assists as well.
With all due respect to the kid, McNeill had 8 clangers with his 9 disposals and Collingwood were smashed in open play.

McNeil was rated lowest.
