Dear all,
I have admin support to make this request.
I am an academic at the University of South Australia and I am conducting some research on fans' views of racism in the AFL. To do so I have created an anonymous and confidential survey that should only take a few minutes of your time to complete:
https://doit.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qzEMac13Dw4X7E
The survey is purely optional and a participant information sheet providing more detail about the study is located on the opening page when you click on the link. I hope you agree it is a topical study and I thank in advance those who volunteer their time to assist me with my research.

Completed the survey.
One question you ask is Have you witnessed racism at games. I can answer yes if we are talking 20 plus years ago or the 1980s, or no in the past 5 for example. I think your question should have a timeline as things are different today than they were in the past.

WOOF members, theacademic joined the forum a few days back and asked me if a link could be posted to engage our members on the somewhat controversial subject of racism in the AFL.
It's up to you if you wish to participate or add any of your experiences here.

Yes, you should be able to tick multiples in that segment.

Some suggestions to add questions :
1. What attracts x person to AFL ?
2. How do fans find adding multicultural players ?
Myself I find it exhilarating to see we have found more good AFL players regardless of their backgrounds. Regardless they play 1 or 100 games , their stories are fascinating
3. What do people think are racist remarks ? Free text. It may be interesting to see how people perceive this
Racism can be covert , indirect and subtle
4 have people witness racism at other local club level games ?
What was their reaction ? It would be interesting to know the data if anything was done at that point in time

Hi @theacademic.
I completed the survey. I think you have a good range of questions there.
One I think is a bit leading was can the afl do more. I was looking for a third option maybe something saying continue to develop a code of conduct, educate and enforce as necessary.
Kind of keep building on what they're doing. I felt I couldn't answer no to that is my point.
Can honestly say I've not seen any racism at the footy since probably the 90s? So we are making progress but certainly need to keep up the good work and listen to all stakeholders.
Social media is the real issue nowadays I believe.

Done. Racism is a massive problem and it is now inextricably entwined with politics at a national level in many countries. For example, there has been a massive debate on social media coming out of the UK in response to some Tory MP condemning the English football team for taking a knee before matches. The nasty, ignorant racists that this has flushed out of the sewer - well you have to read the replies.
However, the encouraging thing is that there are many respondents who have called these racist ignoramuses out. They make such fools of themselves by lnking the BLM movement with Marxism, Socialism, racism, Communism - eg. "My dad fought the Nazis to protect us against socialism."
