Am I taking crazy pills? Are Ling and BT saying Daniel on Gaff was a free, even though Caleb fisted the ball?

Right? Surely defenders needs to still be able to defend even when out of position and Caleb's spoil was a clear and clean as it gets.

I'm not sure I'm absolutely clear on the rule....Caleb spoiled the ball first - so at the time, although he collected Gaff, I thought he was ok.

You were always allowed to spoil as a defender from behind and "accidentally" let your elbow hit the back of the full forwards head in the same action as you spoiled (it was certainly encouraged in local footy) and it was always play on. Is it different for front on spoils?

It felt like it should have been a free. Even though it was a clean spoil, he caught Gaff high.

Yeah pretty much. You can't hit people in the face no matter what you intend to do.

Caleb did incredibly well to time the spoil but it was definitely a free.

He hit him in the face.

That's a free kick every single day.

Caleb did well, and yes, he hit the ball. But he also hit Gaff in the face. You can't do that. It's a free kick.

I haven't see a slo mo but Caleb definitely punched the ball.

Could it have been the ball that caused the damage to Gaff?

He got the ball and in the follow through, clipped Gaff in the eye and drew blood.

It's funny how we view these.

Libba went the spoil and got kicked in the face, is that a free? I don't think it is, and Gaff ones was, but we do look at these differently, but the outcome is the same.

Caleb's forearm def split Gaff's eye.

I've had a water-logged footy in the face at close range it doesn't open you up like that.

No denying his arm hit Gaff, but it's incidental contact after a clean spoil. Play on. You guys are mad saying otherwise.

If Gaff hadn't been split open it wouldn't even be coming up in conversation.

Well not play on, should have been a free to Gaff

I think it should have been a free.
Then again, JJ is lucky not to have a broken jaw and that was play on too.

And Duryea should have gotten a free kick when he was taken high in a marking contest which resulted in an Eagles goal.

Of course, but talking about the Caleb one

No way.

I can't believe you of all people are saying that. You were the chosen one.

So is this unclear? Are we saying that even though it's in plain English what's written isn't actually true?

Should Callan Ward have been given a free for being knocked out by Cordy's knee? Eyes were on the ball, incidental high contact was made.

If Calleb was spoiling from behind, hit the ball but also hit Gaff’s head, would it be a free?

Of course. High contact.

Not sure what the debate is about.

The confusion comes with “front on contact” when you miss the ball. But if it’s high, it’s high.

Define incidental contact.

Define incidental contact.

It's contact secondary to the legitimate act of pursuing the football solely.

This is also interesting and puts doubt in my head.

Spoiling the markSpoiling is the technique typically employed by opposition defenders to legally stop a player from catching the ball. Spoiling is performed by hand or fist (as a punching action) either before or shortly after the player has caught the ball in their hands.
The rules are quite strict on defensive spoiling methods. Players are not allowed to push other players out of marking contests or make forceful front on contact with an opponent in a marking contest, if they are not simultaneously attempting to mark or spoil the ball. Also, no high contact is allowed unless such contact is incidental to attempting to mark or spoil the ball.

I'm glad that further explanations in plain English are causing you some doubts! :p

I'm just teasing BAD and it's vexed because we've all seen free kicks paid for high contact in a marking contest.

A momentous day of WOOF.

It's not ambiguous to me, but all that aside as I didn't know the word for word rule at the time, to the eye it definitely was play on and anyone who says otherwise is a mutinous scoundrel.

It should have been a free kick but who cares.

Did we really just have 20 more scoring shots than the Eagles in Perth?

I gotta say what an outstanding club effort it was and shows the quality personnel we have. To manage the whole show under such circumstances and to put in such a hard fought full game of application from all the players.
Backing up from a similar effort at Geelong. Outstanding.

It started off with whether the MRO would look at this, because they surprise you with stupid reports for just playing the game. It ended up with a discussion on a free kick or not.

Huge win in the context of the season, coming off last week I thought this game was going to be much tougher.

Most impressive for me in this win and the Port win/Geelong loss is our ability to change gears and adapt in game. We seem to have a few different modes of defending and definitely have different adjustments to how we move the ball. These changes have been made at breaks but also sometimes in game which indicates a very tuned in group.

Great week for Beveridge given the ruck issues we have. Was completely the right call not to play Sweet. Allowed us to defend the ground effectively and stretch their running the other way. If you’re going to get monstered anyway we might as well use it back the other way.

We all know Richards best position is half back but there has never been room. Injuries to others have meant new roles for others which has created the opening. Will be very interesting to see what happens if he has a blinding month and then we get everyone back. Ed played well, still two contests I would have liked to have seen him commit to with a full body effort.

Use of Daniel always a great watch. We can now deploy him at half back as a spare, genuine half back, wing, genuine small forward and as the extra mid that’s starts forward and comes up to stoppages. Huge weapon for Bevo and one to watch because he often uses him to get feel of game back on our terms.

Hannan I think is working really hard to give options and compete. Also uses pace and athleticism to defend. My concern is whether he is quick enough by hand and in his thoughts to sync with our group. Stands out when he doesn’t release as quickly as the others.

Duryea- please stay fit. Best organiser we have, very selfless.

I think defending deeper has helped Naughton. When we win the ball back across the middle or even half back he often will have rolled up to cover the middle as forwards do. It’s giving him separation early and more options to run patterns on opponents and not get engaged early. Such a weapon that we have, it must be a grind for defenders and their concentration as you just have to constantly block his run.

Bonts defensive running has been ridiculously good all year. His GPS numbers highlight his work rate, having an unbelievable season. Got all his power back too.

Feel we may rue the loss of Gards at some point.

It feels like McLean has given us a spark around the ball the last two weeks. Very timely return.

Hunter continues to play for the team. Watch his reaction to little wins on the ground, great leader on field.

Love Weightman but the umps are onto him. Actually missing out on free kicks now because they assume he is playing for it. Very fine line for him.
