View Full Version : Bankers & Anchors: Preliminary Final, 2021 vs Port Adelaide
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
11-09-2021, 04:09 PM
This is the Preliminary Final 2021 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once the game against Port Adelaide is concluded post your nominations for:
The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play
Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.
Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.
The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

Dunks/ Treloar........Jonesy/Riley (any Letterkenny fans here?) the broski's are back.. and what a time for that to occur.

Williams was unbelievable. Unbelievable. There was a period in the 4th where he took something like 3 contested marks in the space of a couple of minutes

Other than the champs, the lesser lights in Hannan, Gardner and Cordy. I have been critical of them but have to give them due credit for excellent games tonight.
Stef Martin, welcome back, his presence and competitiveness made a huge difference.
Josh Dunkley, getting better by the week.
Anchors
SA Health, you have to pity South Australian's given some of the idiotic decisions made by this mob.

That SA Health decision galvanised us and gave us magical powers.

Do the Port players have to quarantine now because they touched our players?

Do the Port players have to quarantine now because they touched our players?
Maybe. But they followed the SA CHO health advice, ‘don’t touch the ball’. Being Covid safe.

1. We are in the GF again
2. Stef has to be a banker. What a difference it makes not to have their ruckman do whatever the hell they want.
3. Bailey Smith is Gary Rohan's ultimate nemesis. Baz is a big game finals player, Gary Rohan is Gary Rohan
4. We are in the GF again

BANKERS
All 23 who ran out last night, unfortunately 2 of them are going to miss the big dance. Loved the energy of the non playing group after the game, tight bunch.
Bevo, loves his troops and backs them to the hilt.
D. King, seemed to be one out against all other media types, always thought we were a chance because "the Dogs play with Heart"
ANCHORS
To those involved in having to make the hard calls come Thursday night pre Grand Final.
The fact we are denied the opportunity to walk to the G to see our mob in a granny.
WANKERS
SA health, thanks for allowing us to use the Adelaide Oval for a captains run during the game.

1. Bailey Smith - 4 goals in a prelim
2. Treloar for bouncing back after a weight of criticism
3. Bevo's coaching and tactics, especially around quelling Aliir Aliir and playing Schache on him.
Anchors
AFL - they new the health rules in SA as they have not changed, but they were too gutless to tell PA . Both prelims should have been in Perth as originally planned, and now we have to quarantine for another 6 days. Just stinks

B
- First quarter goal silencer performance to a pack of arrogant flogs
- The coach killers being kicked in the final minute of first and second quarters
- 23 blokes who all played their role and stood up when it was their turn
A
- The media hopping straight on the dogs bandwagon after the game
- The preparation and lead up to the game - though I’m certain it fuelled us
- Not being there
Bankers:
JJ - Thought it was really big to see JJ's attack on the ball, his mark going back with the flight in front of Jonas, and he was clean and creative. A player like JJ can really lift the team when good, and deflate us when he's poor. He was really good.
Naughton - He's 21....he's just taken 6 contested marks and looked like a man possessed and worried the Port defenders enough to create carnage and spillage goals everywhere.
Bont - his game was underrated. At one point when he'd gotten to 9 possession, 7 were score involvements - 2 goals. Huge influence.

Good calls Ozza.
JJ whilst a maligned player due to his inconsistencies is such an important player for us.. when he's on, he makes us a better team.
Whilst Naughts had a favorable match-up he was back to his best in creating chaos in the air and on a different day could've taken another 3-4 marks given he had good purchase on them. Going to cause such a headache for teams when he adds a bit more core strength as he is moved off the ball a bit now, but it won't be that way forever.
Agree on the captain, led us in both clearances and inside 50's and some of his release handballs from the contest were sublime. In a world where it's all about volume the Bont is one player who doesn't need a heap of the ball to make a massive impact. Given the light week on the track I was concerned about his touch as he fumbled picking up the ball when Jack had a free in the 1st qtr about 3 times, but luckily it was just a blip and he was back to his good self soon after.

Agree on the above.
Thought it was JJ's best game since the 2016 GF, and in some ways, his best ever in that he put his body on the line and won more than a few key contests. Brilliant stuff.
Naughton was Carey-like but both English and Schache played HUGE roles in allowing Naughty to burn McKenzie without having to consistently compete with Aliir or Jonas coming over the top.
VDM's positive energy and pressure was a big highlight for me, as was Williams' steadiness all night (minus that third qtr stuff up).

To McKenzie's credit, he did really well v Tom Hawkins this year, and has become a first choice defender for them allowing Jonas and Allir to play more aggressive.
On Bont's game....how was his gather and spin and handball that kick started the Treloar 5 bounce and eventual Hannan goal? Play of the night that goal. Bont got his two fumbles for the year out of his system in that first quarter! (well 4 if you count all three when trying to gather a dead ball!)

Naughton aerial ability compared to Hawkins is poles apart and to his credit McKenzie didn't get caught in wrestling contests with big Tom.

He likes that side of the ground given he did a similar move 3-4 years ago in the wet when going the opposite way... for such a big guy he's very light on his feet.
