I’ve seen on socials that VDM has been training with Pat Lipinski.

I watched Lipinski after a Ballarat match train with Zaine Cordy for at least half an hour. They ran their arses off and Pat was really diligent with his times always checking his watch.
I think hes going to be one that got away.

Why has Lachie got a brick under his shirt, I always thought full range bench press was best unless you were injured. Maybe it's just a really soft cushion that compresses all the way down and is only for safety. Someone like Mofra might know more

Still over in WA. He'd basically have to do the whole song and dance going interstate and back multiple times if he came to Victoria and then went back to WA for Christmas. He's coming to Victoria when training resumes post Christmas, he's currently training with some WAFL club.

Is anyone else just a little concerned that we have Tim English with one year to go on his contracts staying over in the West for an extended period? I get we have Naughton, Jones and also our new assistant coach in Webb there as well but are we handing the Eagles in particular an even better chance to chat to him about coming home in 2023?

Unusual circumstance with the WA government rules, but I don't see how it creates additional opportunity for the WA clubs.

If he wants to move West he is gone anyway.

With the money that would free up if Tim wants to leave plus a decent pick for him I’d think we could land a good younger than Stef ruckman. Now we’ve got some tall firepower up forward, especially when Bruce is back towards second half of next year, I’m not so concerned. Hope he puts in a pearler of a season, we win the big one and then if he still wants to go so be it. The better he plays this year the more his worth on trade table. I’d prefer him to blossom and stay but out of the talls we have i would rather him go then say naughty or Marra.

If Sweet becomes a good ruckman that would be sensational too and make us not as needy for a top notch ruck.

You don't think the fact that he is home for an extend period and the fact his girlfriend is there as well increases his chances of make of making the decision to head back home a bit more of a chance?

I'm not sure we get such a great pick for him if he were to leave but I hope you're right.

I still think he can make it as a very good footballer and the sooner we get him signed the better from my perspective.

I think you're over thinking it. BUT.

Should it happen I'm not too fussed. I like Tim, he's a good player and a solid citizen but I don't think he will be the difference for us.

Exactly this, I don't think we should stress too much about it right now.

I think we need to concede that the situation with his partner makes him susceptible, but I don't see letting him stay in the west till after Christmas increases the risk.

On the contrary, I feel that allowing some flexibility at least shows some personal care for his circumstance.

Training session ended after two hours. Would have been less than 100 supporters at the ground....not well advertised(?)

Anyway, some further observations...Bont didn't partake in the last 45 mins of drills - went straight off the ground and McComb came off after speaking to Chris Bell and indicating a possible high hamstring issue.

Can't necessarily comment on whether the players 'trained the house down' - but I did notice the physical attributes of players.

Raak and Parker around the same size/height as Cordy
Bedendo has put on some size since last season and is around the size/height of Dunkley.
Marra has put on some muscle - ditto Garcia, which is great for their second seasons at the club.
Luke Cleary will need to spend further time in the gym over summer (as expected)

Spoke to another supporter at the ground and he suggested as it was Baz's 21st yesterday, he likely had a leave pass for today, so the only other unexplained absentee from the track today was Daniel.

Gun Dog on light duties, rookie running machine turns heads (https://www.afl.com.au/news/691527/gun-dog-on-light-duties-rookie-running-machine-turns-heads)

CLEARANCE king Tom Liberatore is among a handful of big-name Western Bulldogs players easing into the early stages of pre-season training.

Liberatore, who played all but one of the Bulldogs' 26 games in 2021 after an injury-interrupted few years, took part in light duties at the open training session at Whitten Oval on Wednesday morning.

He was joined by father-son recruit Sam Darcy and dangerous forward Cody Weightman away from the main group, with the former still recovering from a stress fracture in his foot.

Liberatore is easing into pre-season given his injury history, which includes knee reconstructions in 2015 and 2018, while Weightman is nursing the ankle he had surgery on post-season.

Josh Bruce, Stefan Martin, Anthony Scott and Mitch Hannan rounded out the light-duties group, who spent some of the session by the boundary before returning to the club’s gym.

Bruce is continuing to help coach the women’s side while rehabilitating his torn ACL, but Toby McLean, who is also recovering from the dreaded knee injury, was not sighted on the track.

Martin, now 35, is working towards his 15th season and appears set to take a circumspect approach to summer training after an injury-ravaged 2021.

Bailey Smith, who turned 21 on Tuesday, was not present while West Australian pair Aaron Naughton and Tim English are training in Perth until 2022 due to border complications. The pair recently trained with WAFL club South Fremantle.

There was, however, some key-position stock on the track, with the high-flying Tim O’Brien — who arrived at the Bulldogs from Hawthorn as a free agent — moving well. The tall produced a Mark of the Year contender deep in the forward line last season, but will provide improved defensive depth after showing strong backline form later in the Hawks’ campaign.

Second-year forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan participated through the entire skills session, continuing his push for a best-22 berth after his highly anticipated debut season yielded only five games.

Captain Marcus Bontempelli left the track before the session concluded but did not appear unsettled.

Wednesday's training revolved around skills and touch, with players working on ground-balls, crumbing from contests, and perfecting their kicking on non-preferred feet. Forwards worked on their goalkicking craft under the tutelage of development coach Travis Varcoe, who instructed players to snap for home on the run.

Conditions held more resemblance to a mid-season session rather than the summer challenge one might expect in December, as a sharp southerly breeze pushed rain across Whitten Oval.

Meanwhile, mature-age rookie draftee Charlie Parker has already turned heads with a blistering start to pre-season training after impressing in a gruelling running drill earlier in the week.

Parker, 24, was taken at pick No.17 in last month's NAB AFL Rookie Draft, arriving from SANFL club Sturt. The 193cm utility is a speedy talent but as displayed in the early stages of pre-season, he also holds a strong aerobic base.

Instead of the traditional 2km time trial, the Bulldogs squad did a drill based around interval efforts in a bid to better replicate the running patterns players are tasked with during a game. Parker was a standout, along with tough onballer Josh Dunkley as senior Dogs joined their first-to-fourth-year teammates in early training.

That is without a doubt the dumbest story I’ve ever heard. I mean, it sounds fake, but if it’s real then Bailey needs to work on some issues outside of mental health, ones that more cash and a new club won’t help.
There's also a rumour that he had a hand injury but should start training next week.
The lack of news is frustrating sometimes.

"Well over 100 AFL players contracted COVID-19 during the summer break, in a measure of how the pandemic’s Omicron surge has spread among younger adults.

While AFL sources acknowledged that the number of men’s players who had the virus in recent weeks exceeded 100, a survey of several clubs indicates that the number is likely far higher and could surpass 200 players".

I wonder if that's really a thing without vaccinations. From what I understand your antibodies post getting sick drop off over time (or that Israeli study people were using to try and promote natural immunity suggests it does) so while it can provide strong immunity at first it's more temporary than a vaccine (even if it's not permanent either and you need boosters etc)

High risk people will most likely need ongoing boosters to minimise illness (though EU regulators are already raising concerns about covid boosters and the impacts on immunity/long term health) but it’s obvious now that this type of vaccine is pretty ineffective against transmission as the virus mutates so mandates and restrictions should be a thing of the past.

Okay but just banking on herd immunity doesn't really seem like it'll work either. I think there needs to be something else.

Even getting the remaining 20% of unvaccinated people double dosed would be big since they're so much more likely to get the virus and suffer the worse symptoms.

2 years on and it's all still happening. Crazy. Up here in QLD we've had hardly any until the past 4 weeks and now it's getting more disruptive with long testing queues, school return delayed (FFS!!!) and no RATs to go around... empty shelves at supermarkets etc.

Hopefully we see a peak and we actually find a "new normal" that is actually... well... normal.

The AFL has done a sensational job to keep the game flowing over the last two very challenging years but if there is a significant disruption again this year they will struggle to get crowds back. I got Covid at the boxing day test (along with many others I'd guess) and there was a lot of variability between me and my 5 mates who were also positive. I had a scratchy throat, cough, some niggly congestion and a 24 hour period of body aches. It's now 2+ weeks down the track and I feel back to normal - I'm exercising, I'm working. I took ibuprofen a couple of times for the aches but otherwise didn't require any treatment.

BUT my wife is now 2 weeks down the track and still struggling with congestion and fatigue. So it is definitely a broad spectrum.

I would be amazed if none of our players have had covid over the past month.

It boggles the mind that after all this, there's still a pervasive "just a bad cold" mentality.

A month ago I did CPR on an anti vaxxer with Covid for an hour who had no underlying health issues and was 50 years old. Now his six kids don't have a Dad. Don't @ me with your tinfoil bullshit because I just don't care.

We need to hear from more people out there on the front lines like yourself EW.
Stories like yours are absolutely compelling and I can't thank you and all your colleagues enough in all forms of first line response for the amazing work you do.

Should be collectively Australian's of the year.

This wave is hitting hard in different ways.

I have access to ongoing information from state gov departments and heard this morning only 1 crane is operating at the ports due to staff shortages. There are 10 days of cargo boats backlogged in the bay!

This was posted by Mattie Malta on fb, thought it was well worth posting. Is he on here?

Live at training (updated report below and vids embedded in comments)...

Overview:
Treloar not on the track, along with Dunkley, Williams and Gardiner.

Ugle-Hagan worked on his goal kicking around corners and was consistently making these. Some field kicking errors at times, but otherwise moving well and looking ominous.

Wallis was a general during the session. Looked strong and used the ball well.

Bont loped around like a prized stallion. Just so silky.

Bailey Smith looked sharp. Was loud and exuberant. Buzzing around and commentating on his own work; "He's kicked ten!" After scoring a goal during a drill. Was one of the last to leave the track.

Hunter looked incredibly athletic. At one point he dived full length to catch an errant handball and somersaulted mid air, got to his feet and dished off. This resulted in loud praise from the coaches for his desperation and commitment.

Stef Martin looked short of a run. Proppy at times and completed some drills outside the main group.

Crozier landed some monster tackles and played further up the field in set drills and simulations, flagging a possible positional or role change (!?).

O'Brien, Dureya, Butler and Hannan completed isolated drills as a group, including short kicking and a series of handball and reflex drills. Doc was great with his instructional work with teammates.

MacRae moved with poise and controlled time and space. Kicking was exquisite.

Cordy did a number of kick outs and after playing on, changed direction and regularly used the corridor with a long, set play kick. Teammates could be heard to say "runway" and he routinely launched down the middle. Looked effective.

Schache moved well.

Darcy did rehab work and looked incredible below the knees, picking up the ball cleanly for a big man and has a very confident demeanor.

McLean ran laps at pace and looks close to beginning lateral movement drills. Rehab looks to be tracking ahead of schedule.

Bruce did work on the bike after a brief appearance on the track.

Weightman did some agility tests and running, followed by goal kicking. Didn't join the main group, but lots of high fives and involvement with his voice.

Richards impressed me with directional changes and looks to be entrusted with slingshot runs out of defence, along with Bailey Dale and Caleb Daniel. Daniel was the standout of all players. A special highlight was breaking a Jamarra tackle on the Hawkins wing, passing to Wallis and then following up to receive the handball in the Gordon st/Barkly st pocket l, before curling an incredible pass to Raak after dodging Khamis. Bevo stopped the drill to praise him and say "That is an example of the features we are striving for. Outstanding CD".

West was involved in everything and looks ultra fit. Bevo at one point challenged him over his decision making and encouraged him to come inboard through the corridor to reward teammates who had made good position.

Sweet and English ran well and looked relaxed and composed with ball use.

Arty Jones has some tricks with fleet footwork, however, field and goal kicking need attention. He and Hannan had specialist coaching over the mechanics of their kicking action. Jones was instructed over his ball drop and momentum of his approach. Had some mentoring from Varcoe also and was last to leave the track. I spoke with him after the session and he said he was so excited and seems like a kid who wants to listen and learn.

McNeil looked fatigued. Bevo encouraging him to keep going "you've got to push through it", suggesting he is recovering from something. He had to step out of some drills to catch his breath.

McComb ran hard and was regularly the pack leader.

Anthony Scott instructed to be the intercept extra man up when defenders exiting via a long kick. He was effective in covering ground and punching the ball out when outnumbered or mismatched.

JJ showed god dash and willingness to overlap. Vandermeer looks like he has regained his spark and pace. Was explosive at times from the stoppages and really arched the back

Libba looked like he was stalking prey throughout, hunched over ready to pounce. His ball use was a standout.

Naughton did repetitive goal kicking from 25m and struck them very well. Has an obvious swagger, looks bulked up and superbly fit.

Bevo was very involved. Constantly giving feedback and challenging. He was critical of one player (don't ask who), for not listening and asking a question that he should have known if he had listened better. Bevo looks to have a real edge and intensity about him. Loved it.

Loved it.

All in all, 32 degrees and two hours of intense and slick footy. Players look United and hungry.
