Were they easy margins ?

For mine, our backline is shaky. Darling proved that. Kennedy is a dinosaur now so non existent. Hawkins and Cameron a completely different scenario.

This is true but our mids should do the job and limit the supply.

Cats wary of Bulldogs’ midfield depth
Alexander Dabb

Chris Scott is wary of the Bulldogs’ midfield depth ahead of their clash at Marvel Stadium on Friday night, conceding match-ups in Geelong’s back half needed some extra attention.

“Their midfield is so deep that they need to have the excess midfielders [play forward]. But you just need to think about those flips, and what the make-up of their forward half is going to be.

“It’s a bit of a balance between being conscious of what they’re aware of, but also asking some questions of their forwards. Tom Stewart played well last week, Mitch Duncan has been really effective back there, our backline group of six or seven or eight players have been pretty solid.

“I don’t think we will do anything to destabilise the way our backs play, put it that way.”

Scott also said that the way the Bulldogs play at their Marvel Stadium home was something that needed to be acknowledged to execute a “situational attack”.

“I think it’s true of the Bulldogs generally, especially at Marvel because they have so much talent through their midfield, they back that talent in, and they try to use the ball. They’re not a bang-it-on-the-boot team, they try to use their numbers and play with speed,” he said.

“If [Aaron] Naughton gets really penetrating ball use with time and space he’s going to be a handful for any team defence, and then on the other side, we do think about trying to force them to defend with a bit of speed on the ball, but at that venue they’re pretty good at getting back.”

Rhys Stanley and Gary Rohan are likely to return for the Cats, who sit one win outside the top four.

Do you think we are? Especially from stoppages.

Not so much when we're in control but under pressure there seems to be a bit of lets make it someone's else's problem.
I've notice Libba in the back line who has great hands has just banged it on the boot to just get it out of there only to kick it to a wall of opposition players.
Hasn't been so much over the last few weeks but when we were struggling we had the long bomb into the forward line and hope Aaron gets it instead of choosing freer options.
My comment was tongue in cheek.

Jake Kolodjashnij out for Geelong due to COVID.
The Cats have three emergencies sitting out VFL - Narkle, Knevitt, Dahlhaus (Conway, Neale playing).
One will replace Kolodjashnij, one sub. But another late out a chance. Still a watch on Rhys Stanley’s ankle

According to the AFL site Toby Conway has come in for Kolodjashnij - first gamer 205cm ruckman. Surely that means Stanley isn't playing?

We go with English/Khamis because our MC didn’t rate Geel’s rucks. That’s arrogance. Instead of weakening our team, play to our strengths, and 2 proper rucks is playing to our strengths. What has Khamis done up fwd so far that Sweet wouldn’t have done ?

Sweet wouldn’t make a difference. Better off going with Schache

Just not good enough, I don't think we're a finals team and if we do squeeze in there I doubt we'll trouble to many.

It's just frustrating, we have to work so hard to score, our forward setup is a debacle. The sealer Cameron kicked summed it up. Clear forward line, forward playing in front, miss kick, chest mark. If that was our end we'd have players everywhere standing in the way.

I'll sound like a broken record but selections, we need another big in there to help Naughton. Stewart stays in we don't get close in this one. There is no one to drag these guys out of the way.

Failing to capitalise after the cornerstone of their defence went off in the first quarter is so frustrating.

In patches we were brilliant, most of the time we failed to do anything with the ball.

We have zero F50 pressure - the ease they rebounded out hurt.

I've had enough of our coaching group.

The fact we came out as limp as we did is on them. Another non top 4 finish.

Our defensive set up was pathetic - we allowed open lanes for Cameron to walk into.

We play Khamis as a second ruck/bench, while Naughton was getting owned and we never looked capable of taking a mark. If that was our plan, why didn't we just play Sweet?

This is garbage from a list supposed to be contending and the buck should be stopping with our coaching group.

Players have a lot to answer for what they turned up in that first quarter.

That was some certified, diamond encrusted, rolled in gold flakes, steaming pile of horse crap they put out during that opening quarter.

Kudo's to those more astute than I for being able to judge our game plan to be missing. I couldn't see enough players execute the most elementary skills or decisions to be able to pass any judgement on the game plan.
I'm pretty confident the planning didn't say let's bomb it and kick to Stewart and De Koning's advantage. Or to turn the ball over inexplicably in a horrible position to defend.

Glad they fought it out, cause I thought we were gonna lose by triple digits by the end of the 1st Qtr. But, whatever, at the end of the day it's just another important test, that we failed, yet again, to rise up to.
Interesting times.

Well that was a lost opportunity. We butchered the ball so many times by foot. You can't we games when you do that.
They were cleaner in the last for sure.

That being said it seemed to me that every kick of ours under pressure went to an opponent and every one of theirs went to a team mate.

I thought the umpiring was poor - really poor. Why the high tackle to Richards was not paid down the ground , I'll never know.

Reality is we can play veey well and we can play very poorly in the same game. The problem is that when we are playing very well we don't nail our chances. Eg, opening minutes of the second half,English misses with a regulation snap, then Weightman hits the post. The McComb miss was a shocker.

We had a few passengers tonight too and you can't win big games with so many negatives coming together. We are going to have to beat them down at Geelong. That will be satisfying and I believe we can do it - we simply have to.

The standing off the mark is hot garbage as a tactic too. We guard space that isn't dangerous, invite the opposition to take territory and for what purpose? To cancel their run from behind and releasing of a handball? We give sides an extra 15m - they don't need run from behind when you hand it to them on a platter.

Might confuse sides who can't use the ball like North and West Coast, but when you give good sides and good players time AND space with the ball you're shooting yourself in the foot.

Imagine if sides stepped off and away from Dale and Daniel

No wonder we struggle to lock the ball in our forward half.

Just back from the game. Such a frustraing night.

We came out from the start with intensity but missed chances. They made us pay with coast to coast gaols and from difficult conversions to rub salt into the wounds. We also then gifted them goals with school boy turnovers. Then they got momentum and we were on the back foot. The way Geelong play you don't want to give them a lead to defend.

Every time we play Geelong they also play the game on their terms. They concede the midfield numbers and contest to us. However, they defend the front of the stoppage well. They force us backwards and they always have players behind the ball. We need to force the play into a crowded Bulldogs forward line. When they get a turnover they are then off to the races and get easier looks when they get behind us.

Our inability to even halve contests in the air is a massive concern. They just schooled us all night. The part that hurt the most was so many uncontested marks where they just had numbers and better positioning.

Even with all of that ... if we took our chances like they take their chances we win. Cameron kicks them from everywhere. Angles, distances, pressure all result in goals. McComb after the play of the night misses from 30m out directly in front. Weightman misses a set shot from 20m with a regulation snap. Naughton misses a snap from 15m out. West can't make the distance with a set shot snap from 30m. How are we so bad at converting? We win the inside 50 count 57-48 and lose again.

Even with all those missed goals, we absolutely gifted them two goals from horrific school boy turnovers in our back 50m. They gave us nothing easy all night.

We are close. But we are a mile away. Just not good enough to get the job finished and have now lost to Carlton by 12, Geelong by 13, Crows by 1 and Port by 17. Even win two of those and we would be flying. But to lose all of them is just puts us in a difficult position.

Schache would have been nice as another tall forward or back. And he kicks straight. That McComb miss was such a let down. Battled hard but such a poor 1st qtr.

Can someone explain to me, seeing as Cameron is not a pack mark rather a run to space player why our one of our backs do not play in front of him? Again Schache would have been a nice option as well as giving up having one of our bottom 6 short/vanilla players.

He left for better opportunites. We offered him a deal. Lippa also aint solving the issues we are currently facing. We won the midfield contest again. A large part of the game was played in our forward half of the ground. We lack classy forwards who can seize an opportunity and score. We lack quality tall defenders. McComb/Lippa is not the difference between winning and losing tonight.

Game was lost in the first 5 minutes.

I respect the effort to get within arms distance, but that’s all teams need to hold us off.

It was a physically weak performance and perhaps only Libba brought the requisite intent and physicality across the four quarters. Mentally, I think we have a bit going for us, to think through the game and get going when it looked gone. But I don’t reckon we are strong enough, for long enough, to revive a BMAC-ism.

2 goals in a row and a physical statement, to get our nose in front and I think we win. But we were never going to get that extra goal.

I can handle a mistake here and there, its going to happen to the very best. For many of his opponent's goals, there wasn't much I thought he did wrong. He's no A grader, but he's definitely shown he is able to play a role at this level.

But to win big games against quality teams when the heat is on you need A grade talls. Or at least one. We don't have one. Keath is maybe a B grader at best. Gardner is lucky to be C grade. It ain't going to cut it.

How dare you Matt Spangher is learning on the job and trying his best!
He had a great hug huddle going pre game if that's worth anything.
To be fair I've got nfi if he's any good but it would be nice to get some experience alongside Bevo from another system.

Hahaha :)

We spent a lot of tickets getting back into the game. They conserved a lot of energy chipping it around defending a large league. It was always going to be very difficult after the first quarter. The second half of the first quarter we dropped our heads. But the first half we played with intent and had plenty of chances. We just didn't take them which handed them momentum.

We kicked 1.5. They kicked 7.2. Six to nine scoring shots. We missed how many easy chances?

We don't have anyone.

Gardner played majority of the game on Hawkins and kept him to two goals. One was due to a mistake by our backs and the other a joe the goose.

Cameron on the other hand killed us, and was too mobile for Keith

I was surprised Gardner went to Hawkins and Keath to Cameron. I would have thought the other way round made more sense.

I liked Bukus ruckwork and dont think having Sweet in would have made a difference.

We did not play to our forward set up at all - we knew we were short, so needed to use our hit up players. It is hard to believe that the players willingly ignored instructions, so I can only assume those instructions weren't given and 'bomb it to Cody in a 3 on 1' was a team rule.

Let's give him until at least 50 before making judgement. The talls as we know take a bit longer to develop. He has been given some big jobs.

I agree we are going to struggle if we're relying on him at this stage to be the main man. But i think he's exhibited enough (even this game) to show he has a role. We just need to bloody find a quality tall defender to take over from the role Gardner is being asked to play.

Naughton is doing a very good job this year, tonight excluded, of being the key forward focal point, but I wonder next year, if Jamarra can improve, and Bruce can get back from his injury, do the coaching group look to reintroduce him for a couple of years down back?
Naughton will influence a game no matter where he is. And unless we can attend to our key defensive post list deficiencies at the end of the year, I just can't see us having the profile to really challenge.

It sort of reminds me of a 'reverse Eade years issue', where we just didn't quite have quality talls in our forward line. And it probably stopped us from winning a couple of prelims.

Felt similar to the Carlton loss.

That and the Port game when Marshall marked everything in the wing. Geelong’s last five kicks long to the members wing, they pulled it down for a grab.

Yes. Solid points and highlights what we already know is that the list is unbalanced. It also allows Scott to coach in the negative manner he did tonight. He knows they don't need that many looks to win the game. It influences the way teams match up on us.

Is a fair point the best teams have A grade tall defenders.

Grimes, Rance
May, Lever
Two other players.

Our defence is a real concern and as you say pretty B grade.

Forwards love playing agaisnt us. They have a field day. Even Darling who has not been able to get a kick in a stable this year kicked a bag.

#1 Brown 3. All early by memory.
#2 Curnow 5. McKay 4.
#3 Franklin 2. We contained them that game.
#4 Lynch 4.
#5 Larkey 4.
#6 Walker 3.
#7 Wright 4.
#8. Finlayson 3. Marshall 2.
#9 Pies don't have a power forward.
#10 Jeffrey 5!!!!!!
#11 Darling 4 in a 100 point loss
#12 Cameron 6

We have an issue. We all know it. Big forwards lick their lips.

That is 2 wins for us from our last 17 games.

Geelong owned the corridor when we were rebounding and made the ground small.
Forced long kicks to a midget forward line, we high press, and when there's a turnover they got it to Cameron and Hawkins (working brilliantly together) enough times that was the game in a nutshell for me.

They were unrelenting around the ball too, pressed consistently all night and had the superior talls.

We just copped a very good side tonight and never really looked like winning.

As soon as we threatened they did what they had to.

Not sure how Marra played today? But on the back of 6 goals how both McComb and McNeil stay in against a tall side is slightly bewildering.

Good analysis and agree. They played the game on their terms. Marra went goaless. Not sure how he played.

Well MJP did say he has to do it longer than just two games, and guess what didn't kick a goal today.

Very good player in H&A. But gee whiz what an over celebrating flog. Get a kick in September and then you can carry on like a pork chop. Running around after every goal like he jjust scored the winning goal in the Champions League. Seriously.

The 1st quarter was the difference in that game tonight. We came into the game in the 2nd and 3rd quarters keeping them goaless in the 3rd. The final was even on the scoreboard but they did enough and held on.

It's still hard to comprehend that first quarter. There was just 0 pressure it was bizarre even the crowd was quiet from the opening bounce.

It's hard to lay tackles with the way we set up as forwards, especially in transition when the opposition have the ball in how we step 10m away from the mark and invite opposition to take the space.

When/if we conceed marks in our F50, this greatly compounds the problem and we simply don't touch the ball which is exactly what happened early in the game.

It's why I despise this tactic; it does NOT work against sides with skill and composure.

The last thing you want to do is to give good teams and good players time and space with the ball. The fact we do this every single solitary time kills us, especially given our own inaccuracy problems.

And who would have done better than Gardner?

We don't have anyone else and there lies the problem. He has improved out of site and I have warmed to him and got more comfortable with him being there until he gets the ball in hand and tries to kick it. Teams seem to be leaving him wide open and I reckon that's intentional.
