What midfield group would you send in to either STOP a run on OR (for those glass half full people) ram home an advantage?

For mine, there isn't a clear option which speaks to the problem.

We've tried various combinations with little result.

I'd probably go to Libba, Bont and Smith.

Macrae/Dunks are too slow to impact defensively paired with Libba and Bont who are clearly better, Treloar isn't good at it.

Why am I waiting to concede four in a row to make a change? 2 is my threshold.

Also, I presume English is the ruck? In which case his clearance work is elite.

I said Bont, Macrae, Libba but doesn’t matter who we have we will not stem floods of oppo goals especially top notch teams like Dees unless our mids become more defensively minded, and unless we are prepared to tag a top notch oppo player (at least for a time) when they are on top.

I'd go with Bont Libba and Macrae because the team is hard wired to play defence between the arcs by playing offence. So if we don't win the ball we're screwed either way.

I'm not asking about the ruckman. Just the three mids you have selected.
I'm not saying don't react after two. But I'm TELLING you they've kicked 4 in a row. What 3??

If you want to change the scenario I'm happy to respond to your poll! :-)

I'd want to make sure there is a real contested effort and to try and get the footy in the hands of our players and to stop the bleeding.

I went with Liberatore, Dunks and Macrae because they all have defensive capabilities but I'm still not confident that having 4 goals kicked against us would flick a more defensive mindset unless specific instructions were sent out to them.
Would practicing a more defensive set-up something that we would do often?

Treloar, Bazlenka and Macrae. Then watch the opposition kick the next 8.

I'd go super defensive.

Libba is a lock.
Dunkley is a lock.

Then it gets hard.

Bont and Macrae I'm not sure if I trust them defensively as much as the two above.

For a point of difference I think I would go Baz. He can run both ways.

Libba, Dunks, Baz.

Also I'd tell them I don't care about the clearance I just want a secondary stoppage so we can bring in some more troops.
Then once we have it, PLAY *!*!*!*!ING SLOW FOR 5 MINS!

I’m genuinely curious about the question of what Melbourne did in that circumstance - when it was us on a rampage (we all know when). Didn’t they go all out attack?

They have such a dominant defensive structure that they trust they can pull the trigger in the guts more maybe?

Well that's what my Dees friend tells me anyway.

It makes sense.

Libba, and then take your pick really.

Macrae and Bont didn't adjust in the GF but they are still our best two mids outside of the phone-box. Bailey Smith catching them real quick

Is it too late to say Rhylee West? He's nowhere near our best CBA mid but... he cares the most, and after 4 straight he'd do a hard stopping job better than our 'ball winning' mids.

It doesn't matter who you put in. Each combination should be able to play to a plan and nullify the run and give the whole team an opportunity to congest the footy/ slow things down.

Not matter the combination we play, it always seems they think they can win it on their terms at different times. It's not who's in there, it's their mindset and everyone from Libba through to Treloar have lapses that make it easy for run-ons to continue.

But anyway, to play along, I'll go with Bont, Libba and Jacko. None of them really want to defend first and foremost and they seem most likely to get it in our favour.

In the GF Libba had the biggest bed shitting of the lot when he overdid his attack and allowed Petracca to blind turn away from the bounce.

I’ve only ever watched the game once and it was like 10 beers in but I always thought the set up was bullshit. Yes it’s on Libba but only because he got left with all the work to do. He was sweeping but left 4 on 1 with Jackson hitting the ground like a cat.

Nah man, he just needed to stop it going forward and the only way he could do that was by stopping himself going forward and holding his ground.

I think you're both right. Iirc that's the one where Treloar sat on it tried to pop it back to Libba who couldn't contain it and they were gone.

The issue was Bont and English both ran past Treloar to no effect, and then Trrloar instead of sitting on it opted to do a low percentage handball to Libba who was left with the only option being to try and kill a wobbly handball in the face of Melbourne best mids running at him. Libba couldn't contain the footy, and it was gone.

Tbh Libba is the one I have the least issues with from that one. Treloar the most.

Ross Lyon reviewed the footage prior to our round 1 match on Fox. He called out that Libba had been blamed for much of the Demons run on but that in fact he felt Libba positioned well and did everything he could, it was the fumbles from Treloar, Martin etc that caused the issues.

It's such a shame there's absolutely no footage of the game recorded anywhere so we can't go back and check.

It's actually not a shame. It's a boon.

None on the list.

I'm sending in Libba, West & Smith

Would argue these 3 are our fiercest competitors in the midfield.

Agree, when there’s a run on you don’t want macrae or Bont anywhere near it.
