View Full Version : Cult hero bulldogs

Bulldog Revolution

Completely stole the idea from the Front Bar - as I have thoroughly prioritised soaking up all their work and particularly Mick Molloys endless teasing of Carlton jokes post their historic pre finals collapse.

It's also the perfect time for a bit of levity in the lead up to finals match in WA.

Can you select a Bulldogs team (starting 22) of cult heroes?

Surely WOOF board favourite Mark West features, with Danny Southern a candidate to captain the squad if its not 80s hard man Rick Kennedy

I'll be interested to see who people put forward as their cult figures. Who would coach? and assist?

Hadnt considered the Beard for some crazy reason - had been thinking Ilija Grgic as the starting ruck

Grant strongly in the mix for a forward pocket

Lally Bamblett
Dale Morris

Lally a strong candidate

Does Morris fit cult figure category - admittedly with no definition of what a cult figure is has been supplied or given - superstar Dale Morris

I wondered if Libba was just too accomplished - is he the most accomplished Cult Figure of all time?

If I'm getting the vibe of the team right then:

Glenn Coleman would have to be in it, I mean you don't get the nickname of Galaxy for nothing.
Danny Del-re should be up forward.
That long tall stretch of sunshine Peter Street could be a contender but probably as a rover if BAD is on the MC :)
No team should pass the filters without a redhead in the mix so what about Bluey Hampshire as the coach?
Axe as the pivot.
Terry 'Nutcracker" Wheeler as a player or a coach.

Bulldog Revolution

Does Trent Bartlett get put in the mix? I was pretty young when I witnessed the Ugg but thought he was pretty odd.

I distinctly remember one game at Docklands (maybe against North) where a pack formed in the forward 50 and Bartlett abruptly staggered out and collapsed after copping a heavy hit to the nuts.

Great nominations and incorporated into updated list

DFA seems to be a first choice midfielder

Andrew Wills, and Trent Bartlett, plus Kingsley Hunter were glorious latter Wallace era cult figures

Vesz tantilised, Crofty was formerly a winger turned full back

Does Daniel Hargraves warrant consideration?

Chris Hansen had such a great beard.

Bruce Duperouzel just because a Bruce with that surname is cult material. Plus he looked 50.

Zeno Tzatzaris, well because I loved yelling Zeno.

Tony Campbell. That hair, those gloves. He was clearly lost.

Peter Street. Too tall to be human.

Josh Hill for his ability to man the mark.

Eagleton for celebrating goals before he kicked them.

I'm sure there's hundreds more but I'll leave them to others!

From memory they replaced the point post for the balance of the game with one of the goal post from the little league.
Nowadays they would blame the lack of back-up options on Covid-19 impacting the supply chain.

What about blokes that would've never crossed the Westgate if not for the footy club?

Plough turned up for a year or two then stayed a life time and took us on many magical rides.

Beasley, a stockbroker who didn't like the cold or the wet, it was assumed he wouldn't last a season, yet managed to dominate.

Will Minson the dumbest smart bloke in the competition

Wonderful full back line - super strong half back line, not as much drive from defence as we might want in the modern game, but all selected are/were bonafide cult figures and legends in their own right.

But then, and I dont mean to be too critical, but you fall away into a collection of the absolute best of the best to ever play this game for the dogs - West, Hawkins, Bisset, Templeton, Grant Schultz, Whitten, Johnson, Smith, Wynd, Murphy - challenging the basis of whether these players fit the loosely, non-defined nature of cult figures.

That said getting Steve 'Billy' Kolyniuk into your side was inspired, and then selecting Del-Re and Hudson into a full forward line shows great flexibility to play a taller lineup.

To finish with Williams as the medical sub was inspirational - I think we can lock him in to WOOF's 2022 Bulldog Cult Figure Team of the Year - the 23rd man, medi sub

And when family members tell him about this thread, he will indeed give a wry smile

Im probably of the view that they cross over into another category AND thats why I havent yet added Scott West, Ted Whitten, Doug Hawkins, Bob Murphy, Kelvin Templeton, Chris Grant, George Bissett, John Schultz, Brad Johnson, Rohan Smith, Scott Wynd or Simon Beasley. I put Cooney down, but Im not sure why I did, and I was unsure if Libba was the king of the cult figures, or just too good to be in this class - with Libba senior I lean towards him being eligible as a North discard, and that he is still such a prominent supporter - he is still a cult figure even now.

What do others think?

Is there such a thing as a "Stand-by" or On-call" Medical Sub? Some of the line marking they lay down these days looks pretty thick and gets slippery if there's a bit of moisture in the air. Just the sort of obstacle that could take Tom down with another lower leg injury.

Tom Williams was incredibly unlucky. On our list for 11 seasons ('04 - '14 , he played 85 games and overcame three broken ankles - that shows the quality of the bloke.

Kicked 3 goals from CHF playing on one leg in one of his last games for the Club.
And then there's this:

"Victoria Harbour incidentEdit

On 4 October 2007, Williams and fellow team member Daniel Cross leaped into the water of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong to rescue a woman attempting to commit suicide. The woman did not want to be saved. They hauled her to safety after hearing bystanders screaming for help. When they emerged from the harbour they both had minor bruises and cuts. Both were reported to be in good spirits after the incident.[5]

Following the incident, both Williams and Cross were awarded certificates of commendation by Hong Kong's Director of Marine.[6]"

Taken from Wikipedia

Well done Tom and Daniel.

Personally I think Scotty West was a great player, champion Bulldog, not a cult figure.

My definition of a cult figure is someone we supporters appreciate who isn't always leading the stats sheet. They don't have the love and recognition in the wider AFL community that they get here. They're elevated into the realm of superstardom in our minds despite never actually reaching those heights in 'objective reality'.

If you're a great player you probably a need a Libba esc personality and story. The tats, hitting a six off Collin Miller at the MCG, dominating Taiwanese footy, rubbing your head against players to annoy them. That sort of stuff.

Cooney in my mind falls just short of that. He has the burger ring brownlow and the esky lid slide which probably had him close but given his superstardom and move to Essendon I think he misses out.

Westy, Johnno, Grant, Bontempelli etc while beloved aren't cult figures. They're team of the century figures.

That's just my 2 cents though. Other might have different metrics

Neil Bristow had a short and sweet career with us in 1979. Recruited as a ruckman from Sale and played 10 games. His claim to fame was kicking the winning goal against the Hawks. From memory he had a very ungainly kicking style and that goal was probably more luck than skill.

John Brunner? Came over from Yarrawonga for 1990 but left during the pre season to go back to the Border and continue to dominate the O&M League.

Thinks he played a pre-season game and/or in the Pre-Season comp and that was it. Does that count as a cult figure?

John Brunner? Came over from Yarrawonga for 1990 but left during the pre season to go back to the Border and continue to dominate the O&M League.

Thinks he played a pre-season game and/or in the Pre-Season comp and that was it. Does that count as a cult figure?

Neil Bristow had a short and sweet career with us in 1979. Recruited as a ruckman from Sale and played 10 games. His claim to fame was kicking the winning goal against the Hawks. From memory he had a very ungainly kicking style and that goal was probably more luck than skill.

These two might be better nominated for our Week 2 finals campaign thread on 'Team of Favourite Obscure Bulldogs'

There’s got to be some indefinable point where they move from whipping boy to cult hero. Perhaps there’s something comical involved? Exhibit a: Peter Street. It helps to be very tall. I also think we had more cult heroes when we were very bad, because it helped to pass the time.

If they just go from whipping boy to grudging respect (Exhibit b: Ryan Gardner) then they’re just not cult heroes, ( he’s just not comical), and neither are the guys who are just heroes, but I suspect there’s a full Ph D to be written on this subject.
