View Full Version : 2023 Jumper Numbers

This could be one hell of an historic change over of some big numbers going into 2023 if cards fall a certain way. So far it’s as good as done for Jumper #5 & Jumper #12

Gone:

Jumper #5 (Pickering says he won’t return)
Jumper #12

Nominations?

Possible:

Jumper #7 (if it happens)

Unsigned:

Jumper #3
Jumper #8
Jumper #13
Jumper #18

Big club names and history attached to entire list including unsigned players: Whitten, Grant, West, Hawkins, Smith, Boyd, Hopkins, Southern, Giansiracusa, Beasley, Cameron.

Liam Jones was #19 last time. He upgraded into #14 at Carlton. Does Cody take an upgrade and Jonesy takes #19 back? Or is he an upgraded player again? #12 has been recently dominated by KPD’s.

I think Jones to 12 makes the most sense but we might very well keep Martin given there has been no news yet.

5 goes to the first pick of the draft this year.

I'd be giving number 3 to Cam Rayner.

Assuming Rory Lobb comes to Dogs, will he get number 5 ?

What about 12 from Martin?

Welcome back Old SCRAGGer, that was a long drought.

Holy crap there's some old names coming back into the fold and I am loving it.

Welcome back mate.

If Hunter goes could swap West into 7 and Darcy into 14.

Could be a huge haul if we turn over the list as we should. 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 18 all big possibilities to be vacant and really Hunter is the only player from that lot that would be a "loss".

Don't have much talent on the list worthy of the upgrades though for the prestigious numbers. Those who are worthy are already established in their numbers (Naughton, English, Daniel, Dale), and while there are some nice types I don't think they are of the calibre that I associate with those numbers (Vandermeer, Khamis, McNeill, Garcia).

Weightman is probably the only one that ticks all the boxes, and not sure he would change.

We need to get Weightman out of the 19 and then burn the 19 in the centre circle of Whitten Oval before it ruins any more lives.

7 is a special jumper - Does West deserve it ?

No but he gets the father son bump.

I know what you did there, and it is nostalgic.

I posted this on another one. I'm hearing Hunter is staying and hasn't asked to traded.

If Mitch Wallis isn't re-signed, retire no 3 for a year
5 for our first round pick unless he looks like a tough bastard, which means he automatically has to wear no 8.

Good news. I like Lachie, at his best we win a lot of games.

I would fly to Melbourne to watch this happen. Burn it.

If Mitch Wallis isn't resigned, I would offer Naughty number 3. Like Marra moving from 22 to 2, Naughty would be a deserved 33 to 3.

Incorrect. It's clearly displayed in the year by year breakdown.

They even have Lin Jong listed as wearing 24 in that one game where they forgot his jumper, he was a late in and then got injured in the first quarter.

Is that in the list by player?

I can't see what you mean in the list by jumper number which is what GG listed.

If I want to look up all players that wore 19 then what is the link?

If you click on the players name you get their full history season by season. On the all time player list I believe they are just designated as the number they played the most games for the club in. Unsure how to solely look up 19's history, but that'd be why GGs post doesn't have him in 19, he played more games in 7 and can only be listed on the big list under one number.

So jumper numbers 5, 7, 12, 13 open for a new player's name - with jumper numbers 3, 8 and 18 to be decided on.

I hope the club really, really thinks hard about the great #7 Jumper. It deserves a player equal to the history. Who deserves the honour of the jumper and locker that has "Doug Hawkins" & "Scott West" on it?

Bailey Smith would look good rocking the 7, and he was pick 7!

He does have Charlie and Johnnos 6 though .

Hmmm what about Weightman?

Could be the candidate.

I checked Lobb has been been 37 at GWS & Freo. I wonder if Roarke wants a promotion to something like 13 or 18? To free 37 for Lobb.

If Wallis goes then I’d consider putting #3 on ice until the right player comes along. Unless Naughton drops one of his threes off the back of his jumper.

Sit in between Jamarra and Bont at the club. A Centre Half Forward/Back like EJ and Grant. Potential future captain of the club.

I think they’re important. I think 90% of stuff said on Twitter is inane brain cell killing bullshit that can mostly be ignored.

He was the big trade recruit. He would understand he needs to do the number justice. I’m assuming he’s confident he will. So that’s good for my thinking.

From my perspective it doesn't worry me that much if Naughton has number 33 or 3. Yes it's a nice to have some of the higher profile numbers allocated to the emerging players but I'd hardly question the clubs motivation and intentions about it.

I think it’s something interesting to talk about in the present, because it involves a degree of reminiscing of the past. Which is nice. But that’s it a conversation and exchange of ideas. Club motivation and intent is well beyond an overreach. But some folks, many on Twitter, just like be pissed off about something. If not this, then something else. There’s enough actual reasons over a given season to rise one’s blood pressure, but I don’t see this as one.

I've given it a go, highlight so others don't get spoiled if I'm right.

2000 Essendon. I can't remember. Maybe there was a Johnson in 1?
2001-03 Brisbane, Voss played in all.
2004 Port. Can't remember. Wakelin might have been 2?
2005. Sydney. Hall.
2006. West Coast. Judd
2007. Geelong. Bartel
2008. Hawthorn. Roughead.
2009. Geelong. Bartel
2010. Collingwood. Davis technically?
2011. Geelong. Bartel
2012. Sydney. McVeigh.
2013. Hawks. Roughead
2014. Hawks. Lewis
2015. Hawks. Roughead.
2016. Us. Wallis out. Murphy out. Grant out.
2017. Richmond. Vlastuin
2018. West Coast. Gaff was out. Waterman wouldn't have played. Ryan maybe though?
2019. Richmond. Prestia
2020 Richmond. Vlastuin or Prestia
2021. Melbourne. Salem. May.
2022. Geelong. Tuohy.

So I guess us, West Coast in 2018 and Collingwood 2010 with no one wearing it on the winning GF day? Port 04 otherwise.

Shit I now read it's only two. It'd be us and Collingwood i reckon based on the weird wording and an ever increasing suspicion Ryan did play.

West Coast in 2018. I don’t know who 1 is but waterman is 2 and he didn’t play and Gaff was suspended.

If I’m right I actually hate that I could work this out with reference.

Yeh this was obviously the basis to the question haha. No Suckling, Murphy or Wallis. I had a feeling we would be in rare company...

North 1999 had Mick Martyn as their lowest in #4. Only Shannon Grant 6 and Adam Simpson 7 as other single digit numbers. Prior to 2000, but the reason my question started in 2000.

2018 Eagles had Liam Ryan in #1 and Lecras in #2 for his last game.

2010 Collingwood was the second, although Soupman has pointed out Davis which passed me by - he didn't play on the winning day but did get a medal and I think is listed as a premiership player for his 6 touches in the draw.

I quite like these allocations.

All the best boys.

I echo the 'all the best' sentiment but I don't like the allocations.

I don't think players should be given numbers like '5' and '8' without a little bit of the 'prove it' happening first.

Chris Grant didn't start in '3'.

I would be happy if we set '5' aside for Busslinger, but in the meantime he wears 45.

Of course, if he went well in 45 I would argue he should never change it and become the first 200-game Bulldog to wear 45, but that's an argument for another day.

'5' is a pretty legendary number at the club. I think you should earn it.

I am assuming nobody was interested in moving up to 5 like Weightman did with 3. Would you just leave 5 vacant for a year in that case? It would be quite unusual to leave a single digit number free.

If they're numbers that are revered, then it shouldn't really matter if they're vacant for a decade. Maybe that then means there's even more pressure when someone takes it on I guess.

Heaven help whoever gets #4 next!

Wouldn't be many better/high profile lockers around than getting one flanked by Marcus Bontempelli and Bailey Smith.

Maybe Lachie Hunters 12 at Melbourne between Gawn and Oliver?

Agree, the new recipients of numbers have not been thought out.

Some great names wore the number 5

Peter Featherby
Bruce Reid
Ian Williams
Allen Daniels
Ron R. James
Rohan H. Smith
Matthew Boyd
Josh Dunkley

Similarly number 8 was worn by a few tough guys

Alan Mannix
Ian Morrison
Rick Kennedy
Bernard Toohey
Daniel Southern
Mitch Hahn
Stewart Crameri
Jackson Trengove
Stef Martin

No-one's mentioned that Cody's namesake - Dale at Richmond, the original Flea - also wore number 3.

Flea overshadowed Royal as top rover in the media but Royal was better.

I get what you are saying and there is merit in it but I'm not a fan of players changing numbers unless it's something like what we did with Cody and our most famous of numbers. In other word, number changes should be kept to a minimum. Any kid who gets his favourite players jumper on his back shouldn't now have someone else on it the following season.
Wally nominated Cody so it makes sense and maybe the new boys should be made to earn it. That seems reasonable to me but I wouldn't have loved Chris Grant anymore or less if he stayed with the number 29.

Honestly stopped caring when Everitt got 3.

And he hadn't earned it.

I think you are echoing my point.

And without intending any disrespect to Mitch Wallis, he was a good servant but not a 'great' of the club. Why he should be nominating who gets the #3 next is something I don't understand. If #3 stayed vacant I would have been all for it...if #5 stayed vacant I would have been all for that. Draftees in single digit numbers just feels wrong to me and whilst Weightman isn't a draftee I still think ending the curse of #19 was his role in life.

I saw player # 11 today driving after training. I was driving behind him and he drove like he plays. When we got to the first intersection he did a neat side step to get into the left lane and then continue straight ahead. At the next intersection he turned right and I noticed that like his kicking, he veered to the left a bit and his turn then had a bit of hook about it. At the next intersection, I am pleased to say that he was able to increase his stride to beat the change of the lights and left me in his wake.

It's not just a number. Giving a kid who'll struggle to even get a game number #5 is ridiculous. 5 has some legends attached to it and should be earned not given.

Kind of, but I think there's merit in the implication of earning something rather than just being given it.

AFL players (and draftees) get given a lot - nothing wrong with making them earn something, even if it's just a number. Helps the process of players buying into club history too.

Agree with mjp and the above posts re: care factor after Everitt got 3. Feel we've continued to 'dilute' the significance since, with Wallis in 3/Dunkley in 5 etc. These players are 'good', but far from 'great', which is what 3, 5, 6, 7, 14 etc. deserve.

I agree but that's really the essence of the issues people are raising - in a simple thing like jumper numbers, fan engagement through recognising history and emotional connections should be an easy box for the club to tick.

The Hawks did it when they drafted in their guns Roughead #35, Franklin #38, Lewis #40, Mitchell #28 etc. I don't REALLY care that Buss is in #5 but I do think higher numbers are more appropriate for draftees.

An issue for us is - who takes them? Our guns have made their names in their numbers, many winning flags. I'm sure it was offered to Dale, Naughton, English but they all must like the history they're creating for themselves.

If we hold the numbers where does it end and what numbers do we hold?

So we hold 3,4,5,7,8 etc. until someone puts up their hand? What criteria do we use to determine if a player is ready or not?

By leaving them vacant for a period of time does it put even more pressure on the next player to receive that number?

Are things slightly different now with such reduced list sizes?

How would we feel if for example #4 was from now reserved for club captains?

They can forge their own new paths.

If you run through our established players and offer them 5 / 8 etc. and no-one wants them you have two options

1. Leave them vacant (and really these numbers were vacated by Dunkley who left a sour taste and Martin, a break glass player whose best was his early days at Brisbane) or 2. give them to some highly credentialed draft picks.

I'm all for building some confidence and expectation in these kids, use the numbers to show them we believe in them. I have no problem with Charlie in 8 he's done it the hard way and I have zero attachment to 5. I can't move on from Dunkley quick enough.

Personally rather Buss get 5 than vacate it for a year allowing Dunkley to think we're respectfully hanging it up in respect of a Premiership Player and Best and Fairest.

Kids are different today they need more management, more positive reinforcement. Maybe that's a problem I dunno but earning numbers is a bit 1980s to me. Did anyone blink an eyelid at Marra getting Bob's number 2 after 5 games in 2021?

This is kinda the same thing.

I don't like it that the high numbers are reserved for the VFL Team. An AFL player should be allowed to pick a high number if it is free. All players for all Dogs' teams should have a unique number in the Club, not the team they play in, AFL, VFL, AFWL, VFWL. That number should be for the entire career at the Club, no changing or "upgrades."
