David Porter passes away

Just heard David passed away . A huge part of the club over the years who had a lot of health issues recently .
A good bloke who everyone knew through game highlights in the 80s and 90s waving his flag and running the cheer squad. He was 63 RIP David I will miss the small chats we had over the years .

RIP. Was the face of the cheer squad for so long. Recall that the day after a game in Adelaide in the late 1990s (we won) I went on a bus tour of the Barossa Valley and Dave was also on it. Great to chat all things Bulldogs!

I was actually in the cheer squad in the mid 80s and some of those bus trips out to Waverly with Gary? his wife and the crew were eye opening for a young fella.

It's a huge loss to the club. I used to go to games with Dave back in the late '70s. Him and I in his old Kingswood sedan. I remember one game we won out at VFL park Dave said "hold this out of your window" it was a speaker that was attached to his car's tape player and we did laps of the car park playing the theme song.

I was the person who talked Dave into joining the cheer squad.

RIP old mate.

RIP Dave. He was a Bulldog through and through. I remember being in the cheer squad when I was a kid and he was passionate back then and we would get flogged every week. I'm so glad people like him and my mum got to see a flag before they passed. He will be sadly missed.

Stayed in the same hotel as David up in Darwin for a dogs game back in 2008 and a had a quick chat to him in the hallway. Wasn't built for the Darwin heat.

David pretty much was the cheer squad for Yarraville. He organised everything from making the run through and transportation to keeping all the flags and stuff at his place.

I followed them closely in the 60's while they were in division 1. Ronnie Warwick, Alan Bongetti, Bob and Ron Brown, Don Whitten. They had a lot of good players in those days.

And lived opposite the ground in Williamstown road. I used to wax with his son Ramon when we played kick to kick at school. He was good high mark and I was a left footer so I had an extra half a second to get on the other side of kids when it hits the ground.

I knew I was getting old when I saw a picture of Callan and his family the day he got drafted. I pointed out a picture to an old mate and asked why his mum looked familiar. He said "that's Ramon Gunn's annoying little sister from school"

Sometimes had a brief chat with Dave at vfl matches. Rain, hail, shine - Dave was there in his wheelchair. Loyal supporter. RIP.

In my first year at my first full time job Bill Gunn would fitted my first pair of safety boots at Shell Newport. A gentle giant. Big head (physically) and big hands. Only later did I hear from colleagues that he was apparently a good footy player. One of those heads that a sculptor would love to portray, full of character.
