Barry Round, the 1981 Brownlow medallist and first captain of the Sydney Swans, has died aged 72. Round played 328 games in the VFL between 1969 and 1985, playing for Footscray, South Melbourne and Sydney, before becoming captain-coach of Williamstown, leading them to the 1986 and 1990 VFA premierships.
The Williamstown Football Club announced Round's passing via its website this morning.
The ruckman from Warragul, east of Melbourne, was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Quite a character big Bazza. Won the Bronwlow in a tie with his former Bulldogs team mate Bernie Quinlan.

Thoughts are with his family and friends.

Sad news. Condolences to family and friends. He had an amazing career at the top level.

A giant of a man for the Dogs the Swans Williamstown and the AFL, passed away so early, condolences to his family and friends.

He wasn’t that old and was in palliative care. I remember watching him playing for Sydney Swans when they had a fair bit of tv coverage and thought he was a giant. Sad news. Condolences to his family and friends.

Barry always wanted to be number one ruck but at the time we had the great Gary Dempsey (Brownlow, 6 x Sutton medals), so he took the opportunity to join South Melbourne/Sydney.

Barry ended up with his own Brownlow tying with another former Bulldog Bernie Quinlan.

I remember being in the rooms in the late 70s after we won a big game at Western Oval, and Barry came in as well (even though he had left the club), to congratulate the players. It was ashame he left the club as he was a good player and of great Character.

I did enjoy watching Barry playing with us. A forward/ruck who averaged a goal a game. Giant of a man whose hands dwarfed a can of beer when holding it. Met him in the Social Club in the early 70's. His son David joined us in the 90's under the father/son rule but unfortunately only played a couple of games for us. RIP Barry.

And swam every morning at Willy beach when he retired. Some great black and white footage of Barry playing for the dogs on youtube.

Love the Point Gellibrand Costal Park lookout (great place to relax and take in the view across the bay) and Williamstown Beach great walk there along the Esplanade when the weather is cooler. True. I think Barry played in 4 grand finals in 5 years at Willy. Coburg had knocked us off the 2 previous years and the way he played that day was heroic. He certainly went out on a high. When Dane Swan's dad Billy took that mark nobody thought he would make the distance. But he did. The siren went and the rest is history.
