The VFL came after the VFA.
Formally, the beginning of Australia's top football league - the VFL - began in 1896.
But not everyone thinks that.
In his recent book, Football's Forgotten Years, former Geelong Football Club President Colin Carter surmises that it's predecessor, the Victorian Football Association, should be where the AFL records officially start.
The VFA formed in the 1870s and included 11 of today's existing AFL teams, as well as a number of others, before the schism that lead to six clubs forming the breakaway VFL.
He spoke to Alice Zaslavsky about the history that he has uncovered, and why he believes 1870 should be recognised as the top league's augural season.

Checks BAD's signature.
LOL.
Well, to be fair if VFL premierships count then why shouldn't VFA premierships count.
It is a bit of a non-issue really.
I have purchased but not opened 'Footys Forgotten Years" - has anyone else given it a go???

I'm more of a "start counting when it became the AFL" kind of guy.

Was it 1990?
Was it 1990?
Well, Collingwood created a line of "First AFL Premiers" merch so probably.
Honestly though...the only important years for Grand Finals are 1954, 2016 and (until proven wrong), 2023.

I understood the proposal was to include the VFA premierships up until the VFL commenced in 1896. Unfortunately doesn't do us any good as all our VFA premierships came after the split.

Coincidentally, Geelong won several VFA premierships before the VFL commenced.

Yeah my understanding is that will just include the VFA flags pre the breakaway.

I actually doubt they will, because Carlton will race to 22 flags leaving AFL darlings languishing behind

Haha.
Carlton can have hat as long as ours are acknowledged.
Plus should count the Victorian Championship as a premiership of premiers.
We beat Essendon at the MCG.

Clearly it's not enough that we've given these pricks $300m to build their shithole toy ground with no wings so let's just give them another handful of premierships.

Will they count Sunshine - VFA Division 2 1972?

I'm guessing you are in mourning over this tragic news:
Welding defects found on tonnes of imported steel meant for the redevelopment of GMHBA Stadium have cast doubt over the mid-year opening of the new 14,000-seat stand, the metal manufacturing union says.

My old man must have played at Sunshine around that time.
