View Full Version : Controversial Opinion: 4 talls up front is cool...but NOT at the MCG

You know - I’ve been watching all of the 4-talks debate and I think it can and will work. At Marvel. But the ‘G? I don’t see it.

There is too much space, too much room for runners and it’s simply one (and part of me says two) too many.

I’m all for being different and creating mismatches but we are injury to a runner away from disaster...I guess you could say the opposite are an injury to a tall away from disaster but your mids and high forwards is where the running power comes from.

And if we decide to go 4x talks up front + 3x down back when Gardner is fit - particularly at the MCG, well, I will have no words.

On the other hand does the extra space of the G give our talls more space and make it harder for the opposition defence to cover for eachother?

Great conversation starter, once more! And once more, I don't have the football tactical knowledge to contribute directly, however....

Running on the ludicrous assumption that Bevo and crew, have a measure more tactical know-how than me, they must've also considered this and other potential weaknesses?

I'd love to have heard the coaching group's discussions around the 4 tall's approach, especially with respect to perceived weaknesses.

I wonder what Bevo's counter argument would be? There must be something tactically attractive about it to him? Some potential to produce greater returns than it might cost.
I'm not saying he'd be right, either. He could very well be overestimating the impact of a potential strength, or underestimating a weakness. But I'd love to hear what his argument would be all the same.

Another really interesting thread Mike. I'll enjoy reading the conversation.

I don’t think you’ve considered that the ball will never hit the ground for other teams to run away with.

If we had a couple of endurance beasts we could cover things easily. Bailey Smith is close, that's about it.
Darcy at 60-70% TOG makes the problem worse.

On the plus side, we're certain to use a runner as our sub.

I assume that this goes double if it’s like super super windy. Sort of like today.

Yep it's going to be windy.

I'd pull a change, and swap Darcy for McLean.

I think there is a decent chance for a late change.

Coward. Unless it’s Daniel for Sweet I’m not interested.

I like the idea of the 4 talls as it plays to the strengths of the list
Pressure on to hold the marks but also have players who can pick up the ground ball.
Naughton and Jamarra should still bring ground level defensive pressure.
One thing it should do is minimise the intercept marking that has become vital to AFL defending.
We must not be outmarked very often if at all.

I don't think we will see 4 talls at the same time in the forward line for very long periods. I think three, yes. As for the MCG, I prefer the talls at the G than the tighter pockets at Marvel. The G will suit the big boys.

Lobby loves those tight pockets at Marvel.
