Have i missed something here?

On another board i visit, someone has said that the dogs are considering changing their name back to Footscray

First i've heard, but there is a question about that in this weeks 2 minute quiz.

Is this a story about nothing?

PS I think i prefer W B over Footscray.

Half of me wishes this was true as this place was my roots as a supporter, however, the club changed it to encourage all people in the western suburbs to embrace the club as their own. Memberships are significantly up since the change of name so maybe it's a good thing to keep it the way it is.

I haven't heard anything to suggest that the change will happen however, whist I embraced the name change to the Western Bulldogs I now think it was the wrong thing to do.

Essentially it was so that the club would be embraced by all the business in the Western region and clearly that has not happened.

I don't think we will change the name back to Footscray at all but I wouldn't oppose it.

I think this may come from confusion and now they are talking about a West Sydney? How many times have you read articles with headline "WEST...." and thought its been about us but it was West Coast Eagles? With 3 west sides now coming into comp, and no doubt a lot will be said about the new one in years to come in the press.
Might even be an AFL sniff.
I prefer the Western Bulldogs but who would have thought that a few years ago?
Footscray Bullldogs might be new nick as it defines we are the Melbourne West side.

I know where this has come from.

In this weeks 2 minute survey (which I encourage everyone to complete, because it is a chance for you to give the club feedback, rather than just whinging on forums..... rant over) there is a question asking if you would like the club to change it's name back to Footscray.

Wash your mouth out with soap sir.

As much as I'd love the club to embrace its original and rightful name, I don't think it's very likely. I find this most regrettable. To me, the name change spoke of self-loathing of the highest order.

I'd argue increased membership and better sponsorship opportunities has far more to do with the quality of the off-field personnel on board and the professionalism they've slowly engendered at the club, than some superficial moniker change.

Lets go with Prince Imperial. (per 1880's)

Seriously, the name Western Bulldogs is here to stay.

Do you get a weekly email from the club. There is a link to it in that.

I think in this day and age they probably did the right thing by changing the name.
However, when we become completely financially bullet proof, I would prefer to barrack for the Footscray Football Club.

l can't see it going back to Footscray.

l actually prefer Western Bulldogs but it would make no difference what they are called.

I have to point this out.

Our club is called the Footscray Football Club, and has been since our entry into the VFL (and much earlier).

Our trading name is Western Bulldogs and as far as I'm concerned as long as the club name remains the Footscray Football Club I am happy.

The club could choose a trading name for a new Western Suburb every year and I wouldn't be overly concerned (think of the increase in merchandising revenue) - although the West Maribyrnong Bulldogs doesn't have a very nice ring to it.

Here's a few to make your skin crawl. The Kealba Bulldogs. The Water Gardens Bulldogs.
The Ginifer Bulldogs. The Hillside 2000 Bulldogs. The Keilor Downs Bulldogs. The Sanctuary Lakes Bulldogs.................

I think it's important to remember that YOU ( all of you,......... ALL OF YOU) can call the team whatever you like. I call them Footscray or just the Dogs. I call it Docklands instead of Telstradome. Kardinia park instead of Shell Stadium etc etc. You don't have to obediently fall into line with corporate re branding.

Showing your age Douggy, yeah i still call it Kardinia park but problem is when you call them by their old names , the young ones look at you strange and either dont know what your on about and tend to think your old and senile lol.
I actually called it Kardinia park the other day and in the back of my mind thought. well i got no idea what the place is now its changed names that many times.

I live in the eastern suburbs, and am invoved in local footy out that way. There are way more young kids wearing dogies jumpers at training now than when i was growing up in the late70's/80's. This could have to do with the western bulldogs monicker. There doesnt seem to be the derision aimed at the club, as was by my mates because it was Footscray, not the western Bulldogs. Also the success that has occurred under the WB name seems tgo have seen our fan base more that double since 96, and we'd certainly alienate supporters, be it commercial and membership, were we to revert back to footscray. Look at the NRL. both canterbury and east's have dropped the suburb tag and call themselve just Sydney. Also North Queensland instead of townsville. Anyway, I'd reckon when we decide to put our own stand alone team in the VFL that they might take the Footscary and play their home games out of the refurbished Whitten Oval. I'd love to take my kids there to watch Footscray play genuine suburban footy.

If the VFL side ever got up and played there, i think they would pull an awesome crowd just to be back home, sadly it wont look anything like the old ground but will still have a lot of memories.
Dont think it will ever happen, i wonder if the Western Jets will ever get an invite back there, they seem to be a nomad for a few years and with the training facilities there why not use the ground for games?
But Footscray as a footballl name in AFL will never be again.

That's a good point. When i play West Footscray i get ready for sledging and a possible fight before the match. It's a rough area.

Haha.

Actually some of the guys at school were signing up for netball(i know) and so did I (yes bad i know) and we represented the school. We had a guy who played Jets and awesome basketball players so we were real athletes and made it past the 1st round.

In the second round we came up against a Footscray team (some of them looked 21) and i almost got into a fight with some of these kids. It's pretty funny to think about a punch-on
for netball.

We beat them but lost to the only team with guys who played and knew the rules ect.

But to redeem myself i got into a fight against West Footscray for my footy team when we were getting smashed (got their good CHF sent off).

There was a little snippet about this topic in The Herald Sun today in Scot Palmer's punchlines. There is no link to it...so I have typed it up.

Hunt enters 'Scray fray

The name "Western" as it applies to the rampanging Western Bulldogs has come under scrutiny from influential football voice Rex Hunt. He would like the club to revert to Footscray as his radio partner Dennis Cometti would like his hometown of Perth to have its identity in the expanding AFL competition.

Hunt made his strong views public while hosting a lunch at Crown Casino at which the heart-wrenching video was shown of late and great Buldog Ted Whitten making that last lap with son Ted Jr. It caused many of the 1000 guests to tear up.

Hunt felt the club would benefit by reclaiming that emotion. He was supported by Bulldog Jack Collins, who said when Footscray was sacrificed "100 years of football went out the window".

Footscray / Western Bulldogs, either way, it's still the same club i have supported since the mid - late 70's.

If anyone asks me who i support, i just say Bulldogs or Doggies anyway.

you are completely right. I would not care about our name, as long as it is the team that I have been a supporter of, for all my life.
