View Full Version : Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 3, 2023 vs Brisbane Lions

This is the Round 3, 2023 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once the game against Brisbane is concluded post your nominations for:
The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play
Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.
Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.
The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

Bankers
1. JUH. Such a horrible, unnecessary week for the young man to have to endure. Well done for the way in which he held himself.
2. Oskar Baker. He's winning me over. I think he's been one of our better players across all 3 games. Leading metres gained player tonight, and had our most score involvements
3.Treloar. He really looked heavily invested and switched on all game,
Anchors
1. Lobb, had a moment but looked pretty impotent mostly.
2. Riley Garcia. Just has to switch his brain on for every second of the game. He very nearly undid a lot of our good work
3. Naughton's goalkicking. He redeems himself overall because he's just so good a player in so many aspects of the game, outside of goalkicking. But so frustrating when he misses so many that should be just gimmes.

Bankers
1. Bont- Leads from the front out there. Loved his intensity on the defensive end.
2. JUH- Big week for the young man & thankfully brought his kicking boots.
3. Desire- Good to have you back old friend
Anchors
1. Garcia- Gave away 3 50m penalties, is that a record
2. Lobb- Thankfully he kicked 2 lucky goals but his work rate isn't there. Probably still sore from surgery though.
3. Cohesion & skills- Hopefully we can find these soon just like we found our old friend desire tonight

This maybe a stupid question , why would we play Lobb if he was still sore ? Is it a lack of match up for Brisbane?
I can sse why the Lions recruited the 2 irish players , they Look very strong , good kicks and provide a contest.

Think the intention was that Andrews would get him and Rory would try to play deep and defensively to keep Andrews out of the game. Didn't work. Andrews is too good and ended up spending a fair bit of time working off Marra. Lions didn't rate Lobb at any stage all night. Marra needs to keep working hard on his defensive game. Lobb? Not sure where he's at atm.

B
JUH, 5 goal haul, in the spotlight, took his chances.
Bont, captain’s game and came oh so close to kicking a goal that would have launched us into the stratosphere in the stands.
Treloar. Very important game from him.
A
Garcia. Just calm down about 1% young fella. That last qtr got a bit out of hand discipline wise.
VFL team, an terrible collapse in that game.
Lobb, got on the scoreboard and I think he had some moments of high work rate that perhaps went unnoticed, but gee he looked below AFL standard in a few contests. Looked to me like he was a bit hobbled, lacked power in his step and just a bit of a gangly mess, to be frank. He’ll come good.

1. Bevo and coaching team, under pressure for two bad games, but stuck with the plan, backed his boys in.
2. Macrae - 3 disposals in the first quarter and I was starting to think, he is a shadow of his former self. To his credit he stepped up and dominated the 2nd quarter with 14 disposals and created some good opportunities up forward.
3. Backline monsters - at last we have some guys that are big, ferocious and can put fear into the opposition.
4. JUH - what a stand the young fella made. When he didn't go for a mark, he was still chasing and harassing the opposition.
Anchors
1. Ball movement was still a little slow and we are still bombing the ball inti the forward line for guys like Harris to just pick them off. This needs to be fixed.
2. Garcia - enough said, he will learn
3. Naughton's two shots at goal that went out on the full - what is going on.

Special mention to English.
Haven't seen the end of game stats but at one stage he had 12 HO's to advantage. He also worked hard around the ground and took some telling marks.
Had a good start to the year and one of the few who has been consistent.

Just checked and though he lost the hitouts (basically 2 vs 1) 31 and 3 vs 28 and 16 he made sure we won the hitouts to advantage which is what actually matters 13+1 to 6+4.
He also had 2 contested marks and 3 intercept marks (equal best in the team for both)
I can live with losing the hitouts if our ruckman gets more quality hitouts and contributes more around the ground.

The Chicago Bears have the Monsters of the Midway.
Do we now have in our backline the Monsters of the Maribyrnong?

He does need to get to more contests, but 2 goals and giving Timmy a rest is still very good output for a second ruck.

Were they the softest of two goals though? The first one one fell in his lap and the for the 2nd I think it was a very fortunate decision that fell his way.
We need a lot more from him but it's not his fault if he is carrying an injury.

.
Didn't like how the 2nd was considered soft when he clearly mostly marked it and the only reason he didn't completely was because Joyce was actively ripping his left arm away from his body.

Bankers:
1. Bontempelli's will to win and lead from get go to shut the gate.
2. English's a la Dempsey taking responsibility late in the backline to take a towering mark and his craft all night.
3. Marra becoming Marra, come the moment, come the young man, with Arty as buddy, a game for the ages. The game Jack Watts never had the reason to produce.
Anchors:
1. Norts ball dropping mistake by hand set shots, he twice kicked well for goal, given his lack of momentum in approach, was balanced and kicked through it but twice dropped it carelessly onto the outside of his boot. Drop it on the centre of foot Aaron, it is reliable.
2. Decision to play Lobb.
I suspect Lobb wanted to play as I can't believe the club would just send him out if he did not seem ready, we judged on his communications.
Lobb would want to prove himself and I suspect thought he thought he could do the job.

Dumb 50mt penalties
Bankers:
Running - Yes, I was banging on about it last week, and at the risk of being the guy who bangs on about the numbers every week...its only fair to point out that we outran Brisbane (273kms v 267kms) this week - which was the opposite v St Kilda...(maybe there is something to it!). We put in 250 'sprint efforts to 208 this week (last week 237 to 285 against) and had 4 of the top 5 'total kms' players this week versus ZERO last week. We picked a better team, and we ran!! Bailey Dale had the most sprint efforts on the ground and was emblematic of a concerted effort to take the game on more.
Bont: Yes he had some turnovers. But the team were urged to take more risks to enable the game look like how we want it to look and Bont read the brief. 7 clearances and 7 inside 50s.
Ed Richards - how has this guy become our most reliable player in defence? He's brilliant, composure under pressure and has become tough/brave too.
Anchors:
Naughton - brilliant mark at the end, but the goal kicking flattens us weekly. Is being played at the wrong end of the ground but we're in too deep now.
Garcia - had a stinker. Stick with him and give him a chance to atone.
A mini-anchor to Libba - who although great, has been frustrating me with how he haphazardly/carelessly flicks the ball off in an instant when about to be tackled. There were some times where he did it in some really vulnerable spots on the ground which exposes our defence being out of position.
