Western Bulldogs Night 2 & Rookie Draft
Picks 45, 47 & 58 - But two picks so perhaps a future pick trade maybe? With only our F2 & GCS F3, another pick would be nice.
Plus Anthony Scott to be elevated.
Roughly so far:
MAIN LIST:
Josh Bruce - Croft
Hayden Crozier - Coffield
Taylor Duryea - Scott
Mitch Hannan - Sanders
Toby McLean - Harmes
Tim O'Brien - TBA
Jordon Sweet - TBA
With new deals for Naughton, Keath, Bedendo & Khamis.
ROOKIE LIST:
Robbie McComb - Duryea commitment
Lachie McNeil - McNeil commitment
Roarke Smith - MSD Pick
Anthony Scott - SSP or Live Pick
(Cody Raak, Cat B)
Maybe a ruck, small defender and small forward the main needs with two main lists, with two main spots and a rookie spot.
The outstanding players, courtesy of Doc:
Ollie Murphy
Archer Reid
Logan Morris
Arie Schoenmaker
Archie Roberts
Mitch Edwards
George Stevens

Lual Scenarios:
- Gets taken top 40, no dice
- Essendon try to sell us Pick 39 for 45, 47 & F3 swap. If we do that, we select someone else at 39 and as he slides into NGA range, 58 selects him with points
- He slides passed 40, and we get to say use 45. Then we live trade out 47 for the best future pick we can get, and grab him with 58.
- He slides passed 40, but bid is 41-44. Then we could live trade out 45 & 47 for two future picks and a later pick this year. Scoop him up and then take a later selection. OR. Burn Pick 45, and get Pick 56 or so back. Then hold 47, 56 & 58 and live trade what we can.
- He slides deep. We use 45. Live trade out 47. Have 58 there and unrealistically dream he slides to the rookie draft and hold the last pick in the ND like we did with Khamis.
We only have two spots. I tend to think he goes top 40. But if we can get to 45 and use our pick. Then 47 could get us a F3. 58 secures Lual or shepherd’s him to the rookie draft as a Cat B (unrealistic). But if our night two is 45, Lual and F3 then that’s the semi-realistic dream. But if he goes he goes them’s the rules. But there’s room to manoeuvre right now which is handy.

We definitely only have two list spots on the main list? We can't just decide not to re-rookie McNeil if there's someone better?

Not unless we re-balance the main list to increase the size, which has cap implications. McNeil is rookie list to rookie list so it’s not exactly like for like. Plus he’s training and finished third in the 2km time trial after we promised him a spot. I would have cut him, but the club has made its bed.

Just thinking if we trade 47 for an F3 say around ours next year. Effectively replacing the one we used on Harmes. If we do, that would mean we acquired BOTH Harmes & Coffield for a total price of a downgrade of 6 picks (pick 40 into 46 used on Croft) and a F4.

Hun late mail:
The Western Bulldogs are expected to take another two picks, and they will be crossing their fingers and toes that one of those is GA academy prospects Luamon Lual slips past the pick 40 threshold. But Geelong (two picks), Richmond, Essendon and Fremantle, who have all shown interest in the defender, hold selections from picks 30-40.
They are among the clubs in the mix for tall wingman Joel Freijah, and the Bulldogs are considered the sleeper for Norm Goss medallist Shaun Mannagh, who they had interest in ahead of the mid-season draft. Could he be the latest mature-age recruit for the Dogs?
Geelong Falcons medium forward Michael Rudd, Dandenong Stingrays defender Kobe Shipp and Eagles NGA product Oscar Hine-Baston are all later chances.

Northern academies (i.e. Queensland and NSW teams) can match at any point.
Next Generation Academies (i.e. all the others) can only be matched from pick 40 onwards.
There were three NGA eligible players picked in the 30s - Mitch Edwards (linked to Freo, drafted by Geelong), Tew Jiath (linked to Hawks, taken by Pies) and Lual (linked to dogs, taken by Bummers). Were Edwards and Jiath expected to go then?

Lachlan Smith
Ruck
202cm, 97kg
Hitting form at the right time, the big ruck is at his best when he?s using his brutish frame to stand tall in the contest and offer an option long down the line or in forward 50.
Has a simple set shot-kicking routine which makes him a threat when he?s playing inside 50 but with his size and strength, expect to see his best football in the ruck at this level.
The 2023 preseason was his first full one with football, having come from a basketball background, reinforcing the clear upside.https://pakenham.starcommunity.com.au/files/2023/06/GippPOWER_339169_10-1.jpg

Explainer:
We can take another kid at 58 if we move a rookie spot to the main list. Which we still can.
So the kid needs to be worth that. Plus the standard rookie salary isn?t included in our salary cap, but another main list kid would be. So the kid would need to be Houdini enough to take a $75,000+ hit to the salary cap.
So we could still be live, but we?d need to red hot on the kid. Then not have an SSP/live rookie draft pick too.

Smith is more mobile than Sweet , seems to have some evasive skills too which is rare in a ruck, not a bad choice
Frejiah seems to have a bit of height and looks to go hard and be a good deliverer of the ball.

Smith will come in as fourth in line - behind English, Lobb, Darcy. It's up to him to comprehensively win his spot, which Sweet wasn't able to do.

We clearly rate him!

I think it's neither as good nor as bad as people are saying. Geelong probably auctioned off Caddy knowing there was interest from multiple clubs and Essendon paid essentially a second round pick for those rights. Whether they overpaid or not is hard to say and ultimately Caddy is the one who has final say on if the price was right or not.

I dont think he's been that far off it TBB
Its a notoriously difficult position that half forward flank, and he's been a pretty good tackler, pretty courageous - we havent functioned well forward of the ball during his time. Hes played 42 games over 3 seasons suggesting the match committee have seen enough to like what hes contributing to the team. I dont think his conversion has been quite good enough 19.19 with 8 goal assists, but I dont think hes been too far away from maybe being a handy defensive forward.

He's close to being a good footballer for all the reasons you have highlighted including tackling, pressure acts, courage, hard worker and quickness but he just misses too many goal kicking chances that he shouldn't. If he fixes that or somehow finds a different role then he is a good chance. He's never going to be a 25 possession type player so he just has to be more efficient with his kicking.
The problem for him is that West is probably ahead of him and Clarke could catch him this year if he doesn't tidy up his kicking.

Sort of agree but only a bit, for me he just hasn?t improved enough, pretty flatline recently. Also some of his misses have been horrible and when you are a short, marginal player you are not afforded as much leeway with conversion.

McNeil has actually gone at 39% across his career (you have to count the complete misses as well). 70% would put him in GOAT territory. Anything above 50% is reasonable.

I do agree it's probably the most difficult position to play, but that's why you need an elite asset - pace, goal scoring ability, playmaking, something. I think what you see is what you get with him and I thought now would have been a good time to punt on another prospect.

Club frustration grows over AFL’s next generation academy rules at draft
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/nov/22/afl-draft-2023-club-next-generation-academy-rules
West Coast want a “discussion” on the AFL’s controversial next generation academies, admitting to frustration at losing Lance Collard to St Kilda in the national draft.
The NGA system was a big talking point around the national draft on Monday and Tuesday nights. Gold Coast, as one of the four northern clubs, were able to recruit four of their academy players in the first round and it is tipped to be a bumper crop for the Suns.
But under AFL rules, the other 14 clubs could not stop rival clubs poaching their NGA players if they were nominated inside the first 40 selections. So Collard, a highly rated Eagles academy prospect, was snapped up by St Kilda at pick 28....

Whats the point of running NGA if clubs cant pick their players , if they dont have enough top 40 picks ? It just complicates and also does not develop any loyalty to the club. It also devalues the whole acaedemy investment. City hall getting it wrong again.
If we could have picked up JUH for a 2nd round pick , we could had a top 20 pick which could have nabbed us a good midfielder

You can't have an academy system and a fair draft system. Either accept that good players will occasionally be taken early under that system and that it will compromise the fairness of the draft (same as Father/Son picks) or completely divorce it from clubs

Why cant they just have a separate draft for NGA players ? Force clubs to reserver at least 1-2 list spot on club list or add another list type for NGA player ? This way the club gets their top NGa playrrr , and validates their investment .
So the top4 clubs would be asking , why do wen invesf in X dollars if we cant pick thse kids in 2-3 yearas time?

I guess it's not a draft at that point. It's bringing in academy players directly without a draft cost. I suppose you could do that but it still has the end goal of severely undermining the integrity of the draft and the reason it exists.

I hear what your saying , the NGA investmemt is collectively develop the talent pool with non tradition paths for some players, with some restrictions they can get picked up in the ND. You could also argue the ones not picked on ND or rookie , they are still available to other clubs

McNeill should be nowhere near best 22, waste of a list spot imo and he had had chances.

Personally I'd lean towards the AFL taking over the academies with club oversight from the clubs. Alternatively just let clubs match bids on their academy prospects with no discount

It was just a knee jerk reaction to us getting JUH. Matching bids and finding points was fair enough.

Can I have the word rookie explained to me in AFL language because how a player with a premiership, 150 games , 32yo,13 years in the system is a rookie is beyond my comprehension of a rookie.

Clubs keep manipulating things and the old terminology means nothing now.

I
We found a way to keep Duryea at the club. My assumption is we delisted him , no club picked him other than is as a rookie. Call it manipulation or whatever.
Senior player, in twilight of career. If we get more than 10 games from him its massive bonus. His leadership is valued and onfield coaching and developmemt of youngsters. The club had a plan to keep him at the club.
But its probably not in the spirit of the rookie system

We've been able to do this since the days of Mitch Hahn as well BTW so it's hardly a new phenomenon

I’m not saying it is but the word rookie and how it operates now are the complete opposite.
Call it the superannuation fund draft. That would be closer to the truth.

With the Academy and Father Son picks, I think it’s time to remove the discount (is it 20%?). The benefit to a club is getting the player, they don’t an extra benefit.
If clubs have to pay full value, then that should even it up.

I think the AFL have this wrong. Very wrong. WHether JUH should have been in an NGA is debateable, but asking clubs to develop players and then not have access to them when they do is wrong. Better to tighten the eligibility of players who are pulled into the NGA program than to stop clubs being able to draft.

I think maybe for NGA, but not for F/S. F/S is a romantic draft distortion. Imagine Daicos playing for the Suns; Ablett Junior playing for Hawthorn; Libba playing for Essendon. It continues the connection through generations and I think it helps with attachment.

And it means you’re penalised for doing a better job as they are going top 40 .. so basically we want you to develop players but not too much or you can’t have them. Or in other words if they are good enough to go top 40 we encourage you to not develop them.

With NGAs either get rid of them or let let all teams pick their ngas prior pick 40 not just Gold Coast.

Well that’s what needs to be sorted or clubs just won’t do it and it will close down naturally.
The backlash from that happening would not look good for the AFL and the indigenous good guys they have portrayed to be.
I don’t see how you can penalise teams who invested more or have a better development set up.

Reckon the AFL should get a fair draw before they lose too much sleep over father/son picks going below market rate.
