SNAPSHOT: ?A gut running wingman capable of producing ?wow? moments when on song, Joel Freijah has all the athletic tools and craft to be a damaging player at the next level.?

Boasting 10 promising games of Coates Talent League experience heading into his top-age year, Joel Freijah showed clear improvement early in 2023 as he made the wing his own. It was Greater Western Victoria?s Round 4 game against Dandenong that really saw Freijah bolt up draft boards, collecting 26 disposals, seven marks and six straight goals in a dominant performance.

Whilst he didn?t quite hit those same heights again for the rest of the season, Freijah continued about his business on the wing with consistent form for the Rebels and Vic Country. He was also tested with time on the inside and stints up forward, with his size, clean hands and running capacity all translating well across each role.

Love his size, apparently he ran a 2.8 odd 20m sprint at the start of the season so obviously has serious speed also.

I have a feeling he is one of those players that looks like a world beater one minute and then can make a silly error the next. At that end of the draft he is absolutely worth the risk and much prefer to take a punt on a player that has clear AFL traits than just your classic hard working VFL player.

If so that?s brilliant. I probably found same ancestry web page https://museum.wa.gov.au/welcomewalls/names/freijah-antoine-tony

Amongst playing group and indeed our coaches & management we?ve got a great cultural representation of western Melbourne ?burbs (although I?m aware Joel is from regional Vic).

Speaking of Middle East & totally off topic I saw a talented musical group Zikra Music (Zikra~Memory) last night in northcote (open studio). Keep an eye out for them - sometimes it?s nice to open our ears to different cultures. Songs sung in Farsi or Arabic and the charming singer read out lyrics before or after most songs. So a mix of lovely poetry as well as sweet singing/playing to non 4/4 rhythms. https://www.youtube.com/@ZikraMusic

The thing that I found most appealing from all of analysis of him is how willing he is to empty his tank and work hard. Workrate of that caliber is really hard to teach so if that's the biggest checkmark on a player then you're at the very least going to see them try and get the best out of themselves.

I like his build, just that little bit more advanced I think than most. Seems to mark taller than he is too.
We are definitely looking at being a tall marking side, even our not so tall have a good mark overhead.
Bedendo if we can get going is also a major high mark.

Yep. I really think wing and midfielder are two different positions and one is not necessarily good at the other.

One naturally goes in and gets the ball and the other is a wide receiver , it’s like opposites and if you’re used to playing one it’s very hard to turn into the other .
The Bailey Smith saga . He is a go in and get it instinct he can’t change that instinct in a flash to a stay out of it and wait for the receive
VDM is the opposite of Smith , it’s not a go at the player it’s the type of player they are .

I really like this selection.

I think his speed and size will really really really do well on the wing

While I think he has decent enough pace, and tall loping legs generally can help a player have a better top speed than acceleration, I reckon his strength there will be his ability to run hard for a long time. Hunter at this best could rack up disposals for fun thanks to his huge tank and hopefully Freijah has a bit of than in him.

At least going by reports of how hard he works up/down the ground and his impressive 2k time that's my impression

From Club

Joel Freijah will become the Western Bulldogs’ latest debutant when he takes to the field against Richmond on Saturday night.

Freijah, 18, is a composed and hard-running utility who was drafted with pick 45 in last year’s National Draft from the GWV Rebels.

He has played in every one of Footscray’s wins this season, averaging 22 disposals and seven marks from five outings to earn his chance at senior level.

“It’s just pure excitement at the moment...all the boys getting to me straight away was pure enjoyment,” Freijah said.

“I probably (didn’t think it’d happen so soon) early on, but in the last 3-4 weeks I’ve been developing alright and working really closely with AJ, Jamie Maddocks and Bevo obviously. To happen so quickly is exciting.

“Playing on the ‘G for the first time – I just can’t wait to get out there and do the boys, the club and the people that have supported me proud.”

Development Coach, Alex Johnson, broke the news in front of the playing group post-training on Thursday morning.

“Everyone has been enormous – I’ve spent the last few weeks with the backline group and they’ve been great both in the VFL and AFL with supporting me,” Freijah said.

“Gears (Jarry Geary) and AJ as I mentioned, and Jamie also the green floor just helping me out with some of my defensive work. The work that goes in behind the scenes is huge and I’m so appreciative of it.”

Freijah becomes the Bulldogs’ fourth league debutant of 2024, following Charlie Clarke, Harvey Gallagher and fellow 2023 Draft alumni, Ryley Sanders.

The Bulldogs will confirm the remainder of their Round 9 team tonight at 6.20pm.

It?s also a pretty good line when defeats comes up?

Sure we?ve lost a few more games than we wanted. But the kids were knocking the door down in the VFL and we needed to reward form. Dsrcy & Gallagher got rising star nominations, Sanders impressed and we blooded Clarke & Freijah too. While getting games into players like Buku, Garcia & O?Donnell. Sure we haven?t won as many games as we would like, but you have to reward form at VFL. If we didn?t, you?d be criticising me for not playing kids in form. So which one is it?

Absolutely and we also need to refresh and expose our young talent to the rigours of AFL to know what to expect. Clarke has had a taste, albeit one game, but now has an idea of what is expected. Similar to Sanders. Looking forward to seeing Buss next. There is some decent talent there to replace some of our older players. Whilst we may not make the eight let?s enjoy watching some of our younger guys have a crack. Kinda exciting. Looking forward to Freijah tonight given the great reports from some of our posters

Re-reading a couple of my pre-season reports, I had Freijah in the 'will need at least 12 months in the VFL' category. He was played out on the wing in the intra club hitouts and looked a bit 'lost' and unable to get into the games. Upon reflection, it was likely he was simply a new recruit who was unknown by the other players and therefore ignored (unintentionally).

When he started training with the backline, he suddenly took on a totally different 'look' as he linked up nicely with that group.

Over the past few weeks in the VFL he has really upped the ante basically demanding the ball as a link up player through the middle of the ground.

When he started with the backline group he did struggle with the defensive side of things - he didn't seem that confident attempting an overhead mark in a pack, but his overhead marking recently has improved.

Looking forward to seeing how he adjusts to the next level in the AFL.

The bit of play in the last when he ran it out of defence and laced it to Bont (amazing grab too) was a thing of beauty. The kid has some nice traits.

Also loved that Toby Bedford thought he could handball to space and burn Freijah but Freijah kept on his hammer the whole way. Thought he battled away defensively

He’s great user and is playing with freedom and dash. It reminds me of 2”15 era Bevo coaching to release the shackles on a young player coming in.

Separately loved JL’s insightful comment that he was “too weak” or similar words in a tackle. Amazing a player in his second game isn’t as strong as a seasoned opponent. Could’ve framed it so it wasn’t a clip… and I think JF is actually doing ok in powerful stakes (and will be imposing++ after another pre-season or two).

I think JF physical strength will come through after 1 good pre-season. Eventhough he is big, he may not have the strength of smaller opponents.

English got tackled by Cognilgio yesterday in the second quarter, and he could not break the tackle.

JF will become better as he builds up his arm strength, this is why he is a good receive and run player this year, he has pace and very good delivery. One on one he isn’t built to take the hits and strength of a forward just yet unless playing on a young forward.
It will come. Petracca like ;-)

I can't say for sure as I haven't seen him play in person yet, but he just seems to be one of those players who doesn't look quick but in reality can move quite well. He can run all day as per his scouting reports etc, and is very clean and composed with ball in hand. Just a very smooth mover who never seems to panic. If he put an extra metre on that last kick he took from the intercepted handball in the last quarter it would have been a career highlight play for him.

Ball handling and composure are absolutely elite - he just seems to one-grab everything. I think his decision making is a huge stand-out as well. There was one point where he pulled a kick and took a short option into the corridor that was the kind of pass Bailey Dale would hit.

I like him as a back - he's quick, he's big, he's strong at the contest and he's safe with the footy - think he could be that hybrid, 190cm-ish defender who can play on all types.

The 'Fridge' is fast becoming one of my favs. He hardly loses a contest, usually halves and often wins them. My guess is that he is one of those bodies with an extra long reach which is what enables him to out mark the opposition frequently. Similar to Darcy, when you think you are going to get to a contest and have an easy fist on the ball, he stretches to mark cleanly and your left wondering how you didnt get to the ball. Still can't get over how consistent he is for an 18yo.

Dear has more exposed form but Freijah’s game was absolutely top notch. I’m not sure there is an award I have less respect for in the AFL. It’s largely been a joke since the start.

Yeah the award is rubbish. Plenty of examples of that, not that we of all clubs need reminding..

Is his nickname Fridge?

Heard it on Sunday and thought it was very fitting. He looks like it would feel like running into a fridge

An absolute cracking interview with Joel Freijah on RSN radio with Daniel Harford.

I am now more excited about Joel's on field future.

Good interview, thanks for posting. He seems like a level headed 18 year old.

He reminded me a lot of Issac Smith in the way he spoke and what he said.

Confident in his abilities but also humble.

Missed out on a rising star nomination.
What a joke of an award really. A terrible history starting with Taylor over Bont. Libba never got a nomination. Some really poor winners like Stephenson, McGarth, Pearce, Heppell and Palmer.

Since the Griffen and then Bont debacle, I don't give this award one ounce of respect. In fact it's better not to win it. Congrats Joel, you're more likely to become Bont than Lewis Taylor.

There's also very much an asterisk on it this year with the two best eligible players both missing out through suspension. I think Darcy would have edged out Reid to the award after a fantastic end to the season, but it would have been one of them without a doubt.

Forget the rising star… can’t believe he was snubbed for All Australian?!

The media has put their votes in for the rising star and it was unanimous for Ollie Dempsay so I thought it would be interesting to compare the two.

Pretty underwhelming winner. Darcy vs Reid would have been way better

Dempsey is 3 years older than Freij, too. 21 year old winning the rising star is taking the piss a bit.

Unanimous is pretty ridiculous. Are they all incapable of a unique opinion? He hasn't been a clear standout compared to some of the other candidates, imo. Wilson, Windsor, Wardlaw, Roberts would all get top votes from at least one person in a blind voting.

There is also the issue of what the actual criteria is - performances across the year, potential, both?

Looking forward to seeing Kevin Bartletts votes!
