Last Q vs Hawks: Simple Question

Watching the game yesterday - the score was close and there was not long to go. Liber is kicked in the head (accidentally) and is bleeding EVERYWHERE. He has to go off.

There is a blood rule. Clock stops, new player on, bleeding player off...clock starts.

Somehow between our coaches, bench and players, we have a couple of trainers slowly escorting Liber off whilst play goes on...effectively putting us one short in the defensive zone.

How do we allow stuff like this to happen?

Play cannot start till the bleeding player is off and the new player runs to their position. Did the umpires do this correctly?

I was at the game and did not see this happen as I didn't see the blood?

The umpires need to SEE the blood to stop the game.

Our players and staff should have made sure that they did!!!

Stupidity, now you mention it. Someone should’ve hit the umpires attention and stopped the game momentum which was against us and stop the clock until we had 18 on the ground.

So - when you watch the Rugby League, they ALWAYS rest on OFFENCE. Whenever they are stuffed, they will take a knee for 20-seconds and drop behind the line when they have the ball...but on defence it is every man up.

We still see AFL players rotating off the ground when the ball is in dispute/in oppo hands whilst in their own forward 50....kick-ins are a great example. This is so dumb - and to me this was just an extension of that.

Injured player - get them off...not much you can do. Bleeding player? Stop the GAME!

I have a feeling that if someone at the club found out about this obvious stuff up, it might make a mention in educating all those on the field. The more on thinking about, it’s hard to believe in an allegedly professional club that we would not know to do this. I mean if st a stoppage Cicily or Meek or Newcombe had blood we’d be pointing it out to stop the game. Yet when we had the chance with one of our own, we decided to play a man down with the game on the line. Crazy.

He was also actively bleeding about 1m away from the umpire. I couldn't believe they didn't call blood rule at the time.

Could some of the players feel like they're breaking the code by dobbing in an opponent?

Many years ago an opponent desperately tried to inform the umpire that I had a light graze on my knee and some blood was visible. My Dad absolutely gave it to him, "dobber" being one of the terms he utilised.

Maybe the Hawthorn players had a similar experience in the past and thought it best to stay quiet, especially considering who Toms dad is.

As a lifelong league fan (sorry) I?d actually expand on your point - not only is the defence ALWAYS a solid line except for one player dropping back to catch kicks, but players are NEVER rotated while their team is on defence because even if it?s only 20 seconds before the replacement player joins the defensive line that?s plenty of time for the attack to create a one man overlap and bust through. And to your point about injured players, league trainers are experts at getting the referee?s attention (and remember in league there?s only one referee) whenever one of their players stays down for whatever reason.

Pretty sure he wasn't. If he'd told the story the other way with the Bulldogs players scarred by their Dad's over-the-top reaction in the u7's I would have added a lol...but I was fuming about this on the weekend. So bloody dumb.
