An AFL-linked identity has been accused of multiple rapes and attempting to conceal his alleged crimes.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced the Melbourne Magistrates? Court on Friday charged with two counts of rape and three counts of intending to pervert the course of justice.
The accused is from a famous family with ties to an AFL club and the wider game.
He has hired top barrister David Hallowes SC to protect his identity from being made public.
Mr Hallowes on Friday won a court fight banning media from naming him at least until a future court date in July.
The AFL-linked figure was charged on summons by Box Hill?s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) on Friday.
Charge sheets accuse him of twice raping his alleged victim in Balwyn North on Sunday January 14, 2024.
The charges state he allegedly did so ?without her consent?.
The man is also accused of intending to pervert the course of justice through the alleged creation of a false Uber the following day.
It?s alleged he also directed another person ?to lie about his movements? to suggest another person ?committed the acts alleged?.
The maximum penalty for rape is 25 years? imprisonment.
?These are very serious offences,? magistrate Brett Sonnet said.
The Herald Sun understands the man was interviewed by detectives over the allegations some time ago.
It was within hours of the charges being laid that he was before court, accompanied by his top level defence team.
Mr Hallowes submitted multiple psychiatric reports in arguing for the protection of the man?s identity.
The order was granted on a temporary basis to also protect the identity of a family member well known in media circles.
The court heard the accused has no criminal history.
Wearing a black suit, he sat behind his lawyers throughout the proceeding.
He did not speak and no details of his alleged offending were aired in court.
The man was released on bail on conditions including that he does not leave the county.
He maintained his silence as he was led from court by his defence team.
The man will return to court in July.
