Is it immediately?
If so that means the bombers have excepted they won’t play finals .
You wouldn’t play 90% of the season and retire if you thought you were making finals.

I don’t think it’s strange at all unless you’re injured and won’t play anyway .
Would you play 90% of a season then retire on the cusp of finals ? Why play that year at all. 2 + 2 = don’t expect to make finals.
Ok so he is seeing the season out.

Richmond with 4 at the moment and counting
On top of that they look like losing Shai Bolton, Dan Rioli, Liam Baker and possibly Jack Graham to trades and you'd think they will bank those picks to hit the draft hard to get in before Tassie dilute the draft in a few years, they will be a rabble next year especially given some of their most experienced are injury prone - Prestia, Lynch & Hopper.
I wonder if Hopper and Taranto are regretting their decision to goto the Tigers given they were going through and finishing a dynasty phase, but will now fall off a massive cliff.

They thought Richmond were doing a Geelong but not even Richmond can compete with the coastal lifestyle mafia

Geez Dylan Grimes was a good footballer. Just the type of no nonsense, hard at it player that gave his all week in week out. Reminded me a lof our one and only Dale Morris. Both were selected as mature aged recruits (PSD and Rookie Drafts), similar size and played above their size. Both outstanding players for their respective clubs.

Happened to catch a snippet of Zach Tuohy reflecting on his career and what led him to Geelong and he explicitly referenced the league wide reputation they've cultivated for "looking after" their players so, yeah.

I've reached out to a couple of Saints mates. I haven't heard back but perhaps it's a lack of defensive efforts.

But why play him all season then? They would have been better off playing a kid, at least after it became apparent their season was cooked.

I think I got a good explanation from them. Bonner is a turnover king and a poor decision maker and was basically a place holder this season until Schoenmakers was ready and they think he is now plus he was an injury cover option for Webster. Both of them seem to think it was a harsh but right decision.

Dodoro licked his lips when Stringer was outed at the dogs as we actually grabbed him before the bombers could get him. Dodoro wasn’t happy at the time.
So you could say that was some sort of spite although we just wanted him gone.

It's going to be difficult to bring in anymore than one or two experienced players from other clubs at the end of the season so I doubt McPherson would be considered although we've done okay with Bramble.

Rookie? He’s 26 and shown form in a defensive role….and we aren’t exactly blessed with quick small defenders coming through.

They have to cut down their list size. They recevied concessions a few years back that allowed them an increased rookie list that now has to be reduced back down to standard size.

Fair fall from grace for Martin who has just finished a 5 year contract reportedly worth an average of $650K per season. Apparently Freo have done a medical so he may get another shot.

76 games for only 33 goals.
I guess it is hard playing a half forward role in a bottom team.

For some there’s more to life than money. He got what he desired from a football career. A premiership.
With Neale’s MND, he would see this disease first hand and who knows, he may have the mindset that's there’s more to life than football. He seems like a great, down to earth, humble guy, and I always enjoyed watching him play.

Having cut Ryp after AOD retired. If we wanted mature free replacements there’s two currently:
McHenry: 70 Games, 32.19, nearly 3 tackles a game - sounds like a non scoreboard small like we have
Taylor: 76 Games, 33.23, nearly 2 tackles a game - ditto
Not sure there’s scoreboard impact here. However if VDM or McNeil moved to say the HBF, then perhaps there’s a replacement
Plus Konstanty at the Swans who was taken just ahead of Clarke. A trade though.

AFL delistings 2024: The delisted players who deserve a second chance and the clubs who could pick them (https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-delistings-2024-the-delisted-players-who-deserve-a-second-chance-and-the-clubs-who-could-pick-them/news-story/50bf091cfb35a3cca3809f9f724e578d)
The best AFL clubs know how to find a special in the bargain bin. JOSH BARNES examines the best delisted players on the market and the clubs who should be looking to sign them.
Cut Geelong midfielder Mitch Hardie is hopeful James Peatling?s decision to pick Adelaide can open the door to a second club.
Mature aged Cats recruit Hardie was delisted at the end of the season despite a stellar VFL campaign that saw him named in the VFL team of the year.
Peatling was courted by up to six teams as he plotted a move from GWS, with the midfielder choosing the Crows on Friday.
Hardie?s camp was hopeful that would leave the other clubs searching for midfield depth, with the South Australian next in line.
The Western Bulldogs have shown interest in Xavier O?Halloran as they retool their midfield with Bailey Smith (Geelong) and Jack Macrae (St Kilda) pushing for trades elsewhere.
But the Dogs could come up empty with the Giants keen to hold on to contracted players, having copped departures from free agents Isaac Cumming, Harry Perryman and Nick Haynes, plus Peatling?s looming trade, leaving room for a midfield recruit.
Collingwood, St Kilda, Melbourne and West Coast were also reported as showing interest in Peatling and will continue to look for on ball support.
Hardie said this week ?I think there has been a little? bit of interest in his services.
?The motivation is just at its peak for me at the moment,? he told AFL Trade Radio.
?I?ve absolutely loved my time here in Geelong and after having a taste of it over the last 18 months, I?m absolutely ready to continue that journey wherever it may be.?
Hardie is one of a long line of delisted players hoping for a new home.
Carlton cut Jack Martin and he will lob at Geelong and St Kilda cut Tom Campbell, who has now signed with Melbourne.
Here are some names that could join them and the clubs that should take a chance on a free hit.
BRAYDON PREUSS
Age: 29, Games: 28, 2024: 0
What a strange career for the former Roo, Dee and now Giant.
He has been crushed by injury in three of the past four seasons, was second fiddle to Todd Goldstein and Max Gawn and got suspended three times in 2022 when he had his best go at being a No.1 ruck.
Preuss has admitted he expects to work his way through the VFL next year so could be a mid-season hopeful but as a back-up, his big body could be handy.
Clubs that would suit:
Western Bulldogs ? When Tim English missed round 24 this year, the Dogs had no replacement. Preuss could fill that gap.
MITCH HARDIE
Age: 27, Games: 0, 2024: 0
A genuine ball magnet, Hardie racked up 28.8 disposals per game in a season that saw him named to the VFL team of the year.
In eight of his 19 games he had more than 30 touches and can kick goals too ? he kicked multiple goals in six games.
Hardie is 27 but believes he is just reaching his peak and has plenty to offer.
Clubs that would suit:
Western Bulldogs ? The Dogs are pursuing Xavier O?Halloran but if that falls through Hardie could be a back-up option.

Levi Casboult retired, ending an AFL career that spanned 198 games across 15 seasons with two clubs: GCS and originally from Carlton .
I thought he was a terrible kick when he started. Had coaching from the Sav Rocca and he became a decent kick. He was a fantastic mark. Took mark of the year in 2014. I reckon we should have picked him up in 2021, he would have added to our ruck depth. He was delisted by Carlton.
Casboult played 134 games and kicked 156 goals in 12 seasons with Carlton, having been drafted at pick 44 in the rookie draft at the end of 2010. He moved to the Suns at the end of the 2021 season, playing a further 54 games across three years and kicking 59 goals

Konstanty: Talk he will be delisted; averages a goal a game and four tackles in the VFL;
The Sydney Swans drafted Jacob Konstanty with Pick 20 of the 2022 NAB AFL Draft. Regarded as one of the best defensive forwards in this year's draft class, Konstanty made a seamless transition from the midfield in 2022 that saw him flourish as a small forward. A similar player to that of star forward Tom Papley, Konstanty finished the NAB League season ranked second for tackles (81), while impressing with his relentless work-rate and tackle pressure inside 50. Konstanty is yet to make his debut for the red and white after injury ruled him out for much of the 2023 season.

I don't know anything about how Konstanty has gone in the VFL but 11 games (7 goals) in 2023 and 12 games (13 goals) in 2024 suggest he hasn't had a clear run injury wise.

Going through the list of DFAs. Draft watchers know much about Cooper Vickery? Pick 27, 2022 to Sydney. Quick HBF/Winger. Rookie me profile:
SNAPSHOT: “A hard running speedster who consistently put up strong numbers for Gippsland Power, playing in both defence and on a wing”
Cooper Vickery has enjoyed a consistent year at NAB League level for Gippsland Power, where he became a reliable ball user out of the defensive half and running down the ground. His transitional running from the back 50 and then rotating onto a wing allowed him to find plenty of the ball, and his metres gained were always high.
An outside-dominant player, Vickery is still only light at 72kg, and his traits suit that outside role. Often found coming out of half-back, Vickery is a player who will look for the one-two be it via hand or short kick, and that allowed him to set his side up in transition.
Though not the most damaging player with his disposal, he is neat and consistent, averaging the 17.3 disposals for the Power, and reaching double-figure disposals each week bar one. In Rounds 8-9, Vickery picked up back-to-back 25-disposal hauls and averaged eight rebound 50s in that time.
Earning his spot in the ‘Big V’ for Vic Country, Vickery averaged a similar 16.8 disposals, as well as 3.5 marks and 3.5 rebound 50s, with his kicking efficiency of 68.3 per cent quite high, but also only winning a third of his touches in a contested situation. Regardless, Vickery showed enough to earn a National Draft Combine invite, and has done all he could throughout season 2022 to put himself in a position to be drafted.

Fairs fair. Tim English is far too timid and with his concussion history recruiting another ruck who is not as timid for competition is a good thing. That might make him fight for his spot a little more and have the effect of making him less timid which is a good thing for him and the team.

I think he's the old Scanlens footy card "Utility", can play everywhere and play well, plays ruck because he's tall not because he's a natural ruckman which he isn't imo, have always preferred a ruckman who is strong in the contest and has those 2nd an 3rd efforts like that Port ruckman can't think of his name, and we have more than enough talls now back and forward to cover what he can do around the ground imo.

Calling a player who puts himself out there in the modern game week in, and week out Timid is a bit shit though. Maybe relative to the competition he might be at times, but it's disrespectful anyway.
Tim had a wildly interrupted preseason with no physical contact after an All Australian year. Subsequently he didn't perform week to week as we would like, and gave us the same worries about his ability to contest in a final. To call him Timid after spending a preseason out of action due to his head being banged up but fronting up anyway is actually pretty ****ed.

As I pointed out it's all ok for bornadog to rubbish and degrade anyone he ****ing wants to, but he's the one who calls out another poster for a play on words... **** me dead!
We all understand it takes a shitload of courage to play the game, and probably even more so to play in the ruck when you are playing in the most physically challenging position on the ground where you are asked to jump into the oppositions biggest player over and over again, I for one couldn't think of a worse thing to be in my job description, but I'm not getting paid $750k+ per year either.
As everyone has seen he has consistently put forward meek and feeble efforts in big games, and many of the posters/ supporters are stick to death of it and have even made fun of the situation with the ''Timid'' call... which I've used much to my little brain's amusement.
Let's hope we can put it to bed in 2025 when Tim plays a more complete and rounded game which should hopefully result in everyone being kinder to him.

Fact Melbourne delisted Tomlinson and Schache shows that they are not up to it according to their list depth.

Paton as a small defender and Hayes as ruck depth both potentially fill a need for us. Hotton another casualty of the dire 2022 draft.

ST KILDA has confirmed the delistings of Ben Paton, Jack Hayes and Olli Hotton, having said farewell to forward Tim Membrey on Monday.
Paton, pick 46 in the 2017 draft, played 71 games for the Saints as a small defender, including just four this year.
AFL.com.au reported earlier this month that Greater Western Sydney had expressed an interest in him as a ready-to-go recruit and he could be given another chance over the summer signing period.
Hayes, a mature-aged recruit from South Australia, has had a horror run with injury during his time at the Saints, playing just eight senior games.
He had some interest from Collingwood in recent weeks, although the Magpies are expected to pick up Membrey after he was also cut by the Saints this week.
Hotton, pick 35 in the 2022 AFL Draft, did not play a senior game for the Saints.
"Ben, Jack and Olli have all been valued players throughout their time at the club," Saints footy boss David Misson said.
"Each have had their individual significant injury setbacks, however, have continually shown to be resilient, optimistic and professional young men throughout these periods.
"We wish them all the best for this next chapter of their lives and careers."

Wouldn’t he need to seek a DFA move? If they’re looking to rookie him then he would wait and nominate only for the RD? In which case we are out. If we wanted him im assuming we have to offer him a main list year with more generous years/dollars. If we were interested there’s nothing from making that offer.

As we learnt from the 2016 Grand Final, Grand Finals are games of territory. Someone with Markov's pace can clear the ball significantly easier by just running as hard as he can and then throwing it on the boot. Noble is a better player but he doesn't move the ball as well.

This shuffling of players on the rookie list must be because the list sizes are too small
ADELAIDE has delisted contracted pair Harry Schoenberg and Chris Burgess with the commitment to re-select them at this month's Telstra Rookie Draft.
The moves came as clubs needed to make their first list lodgements.
The procedural move means Schoenberg and Burgess, who are both signed at the club until the end of 2025, will be delisted and then re-selected by the Crows at the rookie draft on November 22.
WHO'S CALLED IT QUITS 2024's retirements and delistings
Schoenberg played four games in 2024, while Burgess, who crossed from Gold Coast, played seven in his first season at the club.
Under AFL rules, clubs must make at least three additions to their senior list each season, which can include rookie upgrades.
The Crows, like half of the competition, needed to cut contracted players and reselect them as rookies because of their tight lists.
Collingwood (Oleg Markov and Ash Johnson), Sydney (Aaron Francis and Joel Hamling), Fremantle (Max Knobel), Brisbane (Darragh Joyce and Darcy Craven), North Melbourne (Toby Pink), Hawthorn (Jack Gunston), Greater Western Sydney (Josh Fahey, Lachie Keeffe and Jacob Wehr) and Richmond (Mate Colina) are other clubs who will use the same mechanism to delist then redraft players.
This shuffling of players on the rookie list must be because the list sizes are too small
...or because clubs are unable to make decisions on players...or because they gave too long a deal to someone else and now they are being forced to move someone to the rookie list as they are in a position of need. Absolutely the Sydney and Freo decisions smack of the latter...

St Kilda have picked up Jack Carroll as a DFA from Carlton.
The DFA period closes today so it looks like that might be it until after the draft.
St Kilda will attempt to revive the career of a third Carlton player after landing discarded Blues’ midfielder Jack Carroll.
After taking Paddy Dow and Liam Stocker over the past two years, the Saints on Friday added 188cm Carroll, 21, as a delisted free agent.
The man who played 21 games in three years at Ikon Park will add to St Kilda’s midfield stocks alongside another pickup Jack Macrae for next season.
The Saints’ midfield has undergone renovation over the past month with Carroll to be considered for midfield minutes in place of delisted pair Seb Ross and Brad Crouch.
Carroll, from East Fremantle, showed he could play at the top level this year for the Blues managing 15 matches including a 20-possession effort against Fremantle in Round 5.
St Kilda football boss David Misson said Carroll would add some extra speed to the middle of the ground.
“We’re pleased to welcome Jack to the club,” Misson said.
“There was a lot to like in Jack’s performances this season and we believe he can bring an added layer to our midfield mix.
“Jack’s got great leg-speed and at only 21 we believe his best footy is still ahead of him.”
Carroll said he was excited to join Ross Lyon’s men.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” Carroll said.
“I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and the rest of the club and get stuck into pre-season.”
The Saints missed the finals last year after a slow start but finished the season strong, toppling Geelong, Sydney and Carlton in the run home.
