After TCP's footy training had finished last night we were handed a flyer indicating Tom Hafey has a night coming up soon at the club.
One interesting stat caught my eye. It said 18 players coached by Tom had gone onto coach VFL/AFL themselves.
I managed to get 16 of the 18 myself, which I thought was a fair effort. I have the other 2 now.
How many can you get?
It now appears there is a 19th player!
As a new name is mentioned I'll add it below.
1. Kevin Sheedy
2. Kevin Bartlett
3. Neil Balme
4. Mark Williams
5. Tony Shaw
6. Francis Bourke
7. Tony Jewell
8. John Northey
9. Royce Hart
10. Mick Malthouse
11. Damien Drum
12. Ian Stewart
13. Barry Richardson
14. Mick Erwin
15. Paul Sproule
16. Des Tuddenham

Collingwood (1977-1982) - 138 games, 89 wins, 47 losses, 2 draws
Geelong (1983-1985) - 66 games, 31 wins, 35 losses
Sydney Swans (1986-1988) - 70 games, 43 wins, 27 losses

I can think of 5 -- KB, Sheeds, Malthouse, Neil Balme and Tony Jewell.
Was Royce Hart a Hafey product as well, TCD?

Oh, the names are coming thick and fast now (I have another four!) -- but I'll leave them for others to guess.

Tom Hafey is spruiking commercial development projects these days on SEN isn't he. As someone who works directly in the building industry, all I can say is -- some of his advice is, shall we say, decidedly dodgy. (I'm not saying Tom's dodgy, I'm saying some of his advice is).
Caveat Emptor!

I've heard the name Hafey, but not much else about him.
I'm aware of the google function, but if someone can provide a bit of background on him that would be great.

Did he coach Tuddy at Collingwood?
Yes, but that's not one I had so there are 19. I didn't realise Tuddy came back to Colligwood after his stint at Essendon.

I don't think its a Geelong player as not many have gone on to coach in the past 20 or so years.

TCD, you have 6 years on me so I think I did ok to get 14. Guy at work is related to Brett Scott and I remember him saying he coached the swans for a bit in the early 80's. I cannot get the last one though.....any clues? Must be a Caretaker coach

Not a caretaker coach. He was appointed at the start of a season. Played under Hafey whilst Hafey was the Tigers coach. Tough one, for sure.

Very, here's a clue. He' not a Victorian, tho he played for a Victorian team under Hafey & coached a Victorian team.

That rules my long shot out, Emmett Dunne, played under Hafey I think in late 70s and coached Footscray (and Richmond?) reserves, thought he might of had a few games as head coach somewhere but not to be.

Not reserves coaches, only senior coaches.

TCD, if you look at any of the info on Tom Hafey, it's says he coached 18 coaches. So who is the one they missed.

I've done a bit of research & 19 is the figure I come up with:
Richmond 1967 - 1976 - Replaced by Barry Richardson after round 21
1. Kevin Sheedy 1967-1976 - 202 games (Ess 1981-2007)
2. Kevin Bartlett 1967-1976 - 218 games (Rich 1988-1991)
3. Neil Balme 1970-1976 - 116 games (Melb 1993-1997)
4. Francis Bourke 1967-1976 - 200 games (Rich 1982-1983)
5. Tony Jewell 1967-1970 - 57 games (Rich 1979-1981, StK 1983-1984, Rich 1986-1987)
6. John Northey 1967-1970 - 68 games (Syd 1985, Melb 1986-1992, Rich 1993-1995, Bris 1996-1998)
7. Royce Hart 1967-1976 - 174 games (Foots 1980-1982)
8. Mick Malthouse 1976 - 8 games (Foots 1984-1989, WCE 1990-1999, Coll 2000-2008)
9. Ian Stewart 1971-1975 - 78 games (South 1976-1977, Carl 1978, South 1979-1981)
10. Barry Richardson 1967-1974 - 120 games (Rich 1976-1978)
11. Mick Erwin 1967-1968 - 18 games (Coll 1982)
12. Paul Sproule 1972-1975 - 86 games (Rich 1985)
13. Mike Patterson 1967-1969 - 46 games (StK 1979-1980, Rich 1984)
14. Michael Nunan 1971 - 1 game (Fitz 1996)
Collingwood 1977 - 1982 Replaced after round 10 by Mick Erwin
15. Mark Williams 1981-1982 - 35 games (Port 1999-2008)
16. Tony Shaw 1978-1982 - 71 games (Coll 1996-1999)
17. Des Tuddenham 1976-1977 - 13 games (Ess 1972-1975, South 1978)
Geelong 1983 - 1985
18. Damian Drum 1983-1985 - 15 games (Freo 1999-2001)
Sydney 1986-1988
19. Brett Scott 1986-1987 - 9 games (Syd 1993)
The number of games is how many the player played under Hafey, the bit in brackets is who they coached.
I know you wont count it, but he also coached Mal Brown who coached South Fremantle, Perth and Claremont over here for more than 400games.
I guess the bloke who nearly got the Carlton job at the end of 2006 (Barry Mitchell) is a near miss.

There are plenty of reserves coaches, VFA, assistants etc etc that all played under Tommy.
