View Full Version : The Scott Clayton Legacy
Rocket Science

Weirdly enough, began working on this a couple of days ago, only to discover the news of Scott Clayton's pending departure this arvo.
Consider this a retrospective look at Clayton's handywork for the club since crossing from Brisbane in 1999, with the final chapter yet to be written of course (2008 draft), and the jury still out on much of his more recent work.
This really just lays Clayton's work on the table without seriously scrutinising it at this stage, but makes for interesting reflecting and hopefully encourages further debate/analysis as to Clayton's contributions over almost a decade at the club. Might add some analysis of my own over the next couple days, time permitting.

Unfortunate for him this season, but he's a far better ruck prospect than Will IMO.

I think what it shows is a couple of things. The guys drafted in 1999 were exceptional players, but they were coming into a fiarly handy and competitive team which meant that their deveopment was fast tracked somewhat.
Guys drafted through the bleak years 2000 to 2002 came to the club largely in what were the "bleak years". The drafting/trading also coincided with the teams attempts not to bottom out.
Guys drafted in 2003/2004 and 2005 were high draft picks which the club used wisely and to a large extent are on track.
I think Clayton has been good and his track record of unearthing a smokey late in the draft is unparralelled, but I also think that him moving on is less of a concern at the moment than it would have been say 2-3 years ago.

Apart from getting Cooney(2003) which we was a no brainer, and 2003 Will and Wight( good back), 2002 and 2003 where absolute shockers.
The Jade rawlings deal killed us, and you can see it stopped us having a full list of rookies for 2003 and 2004. Imagine picking up Stevens then.... ? I guess benefit of hindsight.
What were they thinking getting koops, morgan, veale and street ?
I was surprised to see Ray has now played 74 games. Now is the time for him to really prove his potential.

Veale was a sweetener to pick up Rawlings the rest is anyones guess but I was a fan of Koops aswell footy with us even if he never played his best
Rocket Science
19-08-2008, 12:23 AM
Veale was really of no interest at the time...he was simply a patsy in the Rawlings debacle to get the deal over the line.
I'll say one thing...Very recent history aside (Hudson/Welsh/Akermanis), our recruiting of mature age players during Clayton's tenure has been nothing short of appalling, particularly key position types, and goes some way towards explaining why it's been a perennial achilles heel of ours.

But......has has been well docuemented, historically the recruitment of mature players was largely outside of Clayton's remit. Rhode insisted on guys like Rawlings, Koops, Morgan, Basset etc Wallce got Bandy to the club.
TBH we chased chickens and ended up with egg on our faces

ACQUIRED VIA TRADE:
- Jason Akermanis - obtained for pick #34 (Chris Schmidt)
- Andrew MacDougall - obtained for pick #29 (Eric MacKenzie) and pick #59 (Jarryd Allen)
- Pick #59 - obtained for Shane Birss
Great analysis but this one always gets misinterpreted. We did give West Coast picks 29 and 59, but they gave us McDougall, pick 34 and pick 66 in return - we on-traded pick 34 to Brisbane for Aker. So essentially Aker and McDougall cost us our original pick 29 and a slight 4th round downgrade from pick 59 to pick 66 (which we used on Malcolm Lynch).

Indeed, Clayton can't and shouldn't take the fall for everything listed, but likewise Rhode can't be blamed for recruiting retreads such as MacDougall, Baird, Pask, and Davidson.

Cartainly not - McD cost us nothing so was worth the punt.
Baird seemed to be doing ok for while until his "personal issues"
Pask & Davison were rookies so didn't even use up a senior spot.
These 4 guys aren't the major misses we've had during Clayton's time.

I dont have any problems with how we selected that year - if Williams had been able to stay fit we'd be looking great from that draft
But trading all those picks the year before for Rawlings, Street, Koops and Morgan is a hobby horse of mine

Largely agreed on all counts, and you're obviously going to have your share of misses along with the hits but that quartet still represent missed opportunity and questionable judgement. FWIW, I blame our mate Aker for Pask anyhoo.
Imagine instead of Davidson, Pask, Baird we were discussing Gamble, Stokes or Tom Lonergan...ahh well.
