So..

Just found out that because of certain emergencies in certain places in Asia, will have to be deployed to Asia for the two weeks and a half weeks. Won't miss this Friday's game against the Hawks, but will not be in Aussie-land for the next three weekends, INCLUDING the Grand Final weekend.

And I upgraded my membership for guaranteed GF tickets too.. poo.

So I've been desperately scouring the 'net for places in Asia that may show the game. The first two weeks (hopefully we don't have to play next week), I may be able to dash down to Singapore to watch it at an Aussie pub (any suggestions?) or the Australian Club.

But on Grand Final Weekend, I will be stuck in a place with truly third-world conditions, and the deployment schedule is chock-a-block on the Saturday. I'm pretty filthy about this, and if the Dogs make the GF for the first time in over forty years it will be bittersweet. I'm still not giving up listening to it though -- hopefully the tent/camp/hostel we're going to be at will have wireless access in which case I'll be trying to listen in on the 774 website, and I'm still trying to see if any of the dumps they call hotels there will carry the Australian Network on cable.

If you have internet access you should get the audio from one of the websites, ie SEN, 774 etc.

not too sure about the tv coverage, is it Setanta sports that show it? or espn overseas.

I know my relatives in Kuwait get several live game a week via cable tv.

Will be in East Asia -- there's mass migration/refugee movement at the moment due to the festive season (Ramadhan) and the Indian/Nepal floods (worst in 50 years) and there is need for international relief specialists to go down there .. there is an intolerably high risk of further outbreaks of air/water-borne diseases. In my day-to-day I'm supposed to be a third-world infrastructure development consultant (although Sedat will probably dispute my expertise *grin*), but when disaster strikes, day-to-day work goes out the window and those of us on the relief register gets deployed any old place.

Australia Network is the only channel in East Asia that gets the footy -- most capital cities are pretty good with pubs/hotels/embassies that carry the network, but like I said, where I'll be on GF weekend, it doesn't look promising. We do have satellite wireless internet links of course, but as you can imagine this is exorbitant and used sparingly for work, and I don't think a live stream will be too cheap! (Having said that though, GF tickets cost upwards of a AU$100 so I'm happy if it comes out below this, although it's a high price to pay for a radio feed!)

In any case I've a full day that Saturday so I won't have much time to listen in in any case. Someone here has already promised to sms me live score updates though.

Having said all that I suppose there is no guarantee we'll make the GF but it's as good a chance we've had as any -- no one else in the top 8 hold any fears for us this year except Geelong and North, and if we play to form we shouldn't meet either of them until the GF.. this Friday is the key, and at least I have some of the best seats in the house for the only final I'll be in town for.

Short wave radio, you only need batteries, just incase there is no internet access.

Yes you can pick up radio Australia and they will broadcast games.

I worked in Asia for 7 years in the early nineties and my short wave radio was how I listened to live games as the internet was not really up and running.

Oh I was there tonight alright. I was very there. EVERY BLOODY MINUTE OF IT. In the best seats in the house. I even got down early and watched the end of the International AFL Cup between Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

I leave next week -- so this week was a GREAT way to end the footy year. Crap.
