Given the league is trying to slow the game up a bit, the 4 boundary umpires actually gets the game moving even quicker and it really tests the ruckman. Quite a few times we had to have someone else other than Hudson or Minson contest the rucking because they just couldn't get to the contest quickly enough. We really do need to find someone who is capable of contesting the ruck contests in the forward line.

I think it's a baffling introduction by the league, especially in light of the AFL's stated desire to slow the game down. This does the exact opposite.

Cross is very good at being the 3rd man up, and both Cooney and Hill have great vertical leaps. If either of these 3 could make it to the contest, it could actually be an advantage to our running set up.

One aspect I noticed is that for one on the members wing, Jolly and Minson were sprinting to get to the bounce and a swans player cut across Minson therefore meaning he was late to the contest and Jolly was up against a shorter player. Nothing illegal but an example of a team potentially being disadvantaged by a pointless rule change.

Yes, has certainly sped up the game. Probably helped us a bit last night, as it prevented congestion from building up too much at every boundary stoppage.

IMO the 4 boundary umpires has more to do with making sure there's a boundary umpire there to make the correct call. People were sick of boundary umpires being 40 metres behind the play, 4 umpires was a practical solution.

If you watch the old games, today's boundary umpires take a fair bit more time to actually throw the ball in.
