View Full Version : Our ruck stocks?

OK a few assumptions:
Street is delisted or traded and Wight a possibility to go even though he wouldn't be classed as a ruckman. We don't upgrade Shaw or Mulligan who are not ready to play in the ruck anyway.
That would leave us with Hudson, Minson and Skipper on the list as the viable ruckman. Is that cutting it too fine? Cordy won't be ready to ruck for quite a while.
I think we need to play two ruckman in every game now because with the extra boundary umpires the game will quicken up no end and additional changes on and off the benches will be required. I just get the feeling we need to find someone who could fill that role for a few weeks here and there if required.
Anyone got a few names that we might be able to acquire?

How about Mark Seaby ... that will only cost us our liver seeing how we don't have any viable draft picks WCE would be interested in

Seaby seems about the only one out there.
Perhaps Ray for Seaby. If they like that price and Ray doesn't i say do a Veale Deal, and offer a low pick for a Seaby.
Macintosh is off the table.
White is probably past it.
Shaun Hampson looks like he's staying at Calrton.
Warnock isn't a reality...
I think we are far too thin in the ruck.

Even if we had a pick to offer, Seaby is not the type of player I am talking about. We need a 3rd or 4th wheel type ruckman. Someone who can do a job if Hudson is injured or needed to be rested or if Minson was having a forced holiday. Seaby wants to be the number one ruckman.

Well if Seaby's good enough, he 'could' be our number ruckman. Just a 'few' questions about whether he is up to it...

Pattison from Richmond?

So your suggestion is to move Hudson or Minson on? Niether would go to the West.
No we need to get someone to support the rucks that we have and add some depth. Comrades idea of Pattison (if the Tiges secure Seaby) might be closer to the mark.

How about Jeff White the discarded Melb ruckman?

For a minimal contract, that's not a bad idea !!

I'm guessing he wouldn't want to be the 3rd wheel but not a bad short term solution.

Realistically, what decent third option are you going to find? Unless you have a young ruck developing on your list, it's rare you'll come across a decent third ruck.
Skipper's alright for the meantime, hence why we re-signed him. Hopefully improvement will come from Mulligan & Shaw to keep Skip honest but the reality is, as back-up to our number one & two choices, Skipper's about as good as you're going to get for the next year or so.

If we get Hansen, can he pinch hit in the ruck? He's 198 cm

As far as I can remember, he hasn't done even regular forward line ruck work at the Eagles.
I still think we need to find someone capable of doing a job like Michael Rix did for the Saints because we can't rely on Skipper being fit and in form if either of the other two are missing. Heaven help us if both of them are out.
I still remember back to when both Wight and Morgan got injured when asked to do a spell in the ruck. It's a specialised position and I don't think our current list covers it.

A few months ago it was reported that Darcy had a coffee with Mark Jamar about his future. Darcy thought he would arrange a chat as he rated him as a player. Could it be that Darcy was talking him into coming to the dogs?
He is out of favour at the Dees, would not cost much at all. At least provides another strong bodied ruckman as backup.

I am pretty sure his name has been on the trade table this week, so could be a possibility.

I would guess he will just be happy to play.

WITH his AFL playing days in doubt, it seems that should Western Bulldogs' ruckman Peter Street leave the kennel he is hardly likely to fall on hard times. The word out of the city of churches this week is that a number of South Australian clubs are interested in the 28-year-old's services to the point that a mini bidding war may see him become the local league's first six-figure man, with $100,000 a year being bandied around for a three-year deal. (from Todays Age)

If i were Streety i'd take that in a heartbeat. Retire from the AFL if true Streety.

The rucks are interesting and if anything this trade week has made me feel that you need to get a few on your list because they are very expensive
You only have to look at the price Collingwood payed for Cameron Wood last year to know it
Seaby is a handy player and one who I think is ok, apart from the hair, but I'm yet to see him as a real difference maker, and to think West Coast want a first round pick from him
I've seen so little of Warnock, but he was a relatively high pick whom the Dockers have nurtured so I can understand them wanting some return on investment in him as he probably close to being ready to contribute consistently

Seaby would be a good get as he is only 24 years old and can play. He has been unlucky to have the best ruckman in the AFL at the club he plays for. A bit like the reason Barry Round left us as he wanted to be number one, but we had a handy player in Gary Dempsey.;)

forget seaby. We need a 1st round pick to keep WCE happy and we don't have one.

We certainly can't count on Skipper being in form. Has he ever been in form?

He played some reasonable footy at the end of the 07 season. He wasn't on the park long enough this year to see if he could build on that.

I'm all for recognising Skippers limitations as a player but I completely agree - his 08 was completely decimated by injury, he missed the whole preseason with a broken foot, got back played 6 weeks or so and did a grade 2 medial ligament, missed 6-8 weeks and then came back again
At no stage could he really ever have been physically in good nick in 08

I tend to agree with the OP, that our ruck stocks look increasingly thin, at least for the short term. With Mulligan, Shaw and now Cordy we have some longer-term developing options, but if we were struck down with injuries to Minson, Hudson or Skipper, the cupboard would be completely bare.
IMO, we need one more 'ruck' on the list, be it senior list or rookie list, who would be able to play in 2009 if required.

Forget trading for hacks - if they're not good enough elsehere, they're not good enough for us.
A sensible policy is to always have 2 developing big blokes at the club at all times. Unless they're the Kreuzer type they take time.
I would keep Mulligan at least and either Shaw or another Rookie on the Rookie list.
Skipper is there for depth.
