View Full Version : My suggestion for the trade period

Everyone seems to want to cut down the trade period to 2 days to "cut out the bullshit" but wouldn't it be smarter / more beneficial to extend it out to a month. My reasoning for this is
* Cut out the hyperbole and excitement to it by the media and fans. There is way too much pressure on clubs at the moment to be seen to be doing the right thing and it is all intensified into a small 4 day period.
* Remove the situation where everyone is relying on another team doing something. I thought how the Hawks handled the situation with ROK was fairly poor and it simply wouldn't happen if it was extended out to 4 weeks. Clubs would have more time to make trades.
My theory is that you could have it for 3 weeks before the draft and 1 week after the draft allowing teams to assess what they picked up and go from there. I would also like trading to be allowed on draft day.

I don't mind the idea.

I would go quite the opposite ... I think it should be two days only and it should be held consecutively with the PSD and the Draft ... all three done in one week.
I do like the idea of the ability to trade on draft day ... I think this idea has merit ... as the draft picks are being taken you could adjust your picks by on-trading with other clubs on the proviso they don't take your player of interest ... but for this to work all clubs would have to declare before the draft who their players of interest were, and if you don't declare him, you can draft him !!

Trading for picks and players can be done on draft day.
So if a pick is a bit of a shock and someone is available at *pick 12 and you have pick17 you can try and trade up to pick 12 to secure that player. All this swapping for draft picks before you have any idea of who is available seems kinda silly to me.
I didn't know Sheedy had spoken about it before.
* Pick chosen at random.

I would hate to be a player if it went over the month, I'm sure that motivation would fall away.
IMO 3 days is all it takes the 1st to see what's around, the 2nd to trade and the 3rd to finish up loose ends.
Clubs should also have to put names up prior to the event and then they are open market, this would spot spineless clubs like North putting it up players like macintosh

The past umpteen years have shown that 3 days is not enough.

I heard a suggestion today that they make 2 deadlines. a nyone on more than $250K per year has to be traded by 2pm friday. Minor players who couldn't be traded until the main trades were completed get another day.
I quite like the 3 week idea but the trade/draft thing would be unworkable.

So your logic is a little similar to that of the European soccer trading system?
I like the idea. Especially when you bring draft day into it, however I'm not sure it would ever be approved as the whole idea of wrapping up the draft quickly would be out of the picture, trades need to be discussed for extended periods prior to taking your next pick.
If the AFL could squeeze a concept similar to this I would very much find it would work.

They do it in the NFL. Teams have a set time limit for their picks and they can do trades with other teams leading up to their pick. it would make for a longer draft (the NFL's runs over 2 days, but is also a prime time TV thing for the first 2 rounds), but allows teams the flexibility of moving into a position to get a player they really want. Of course their player movement rules are much more relaxed than ours, plus they have free agency.

Yeah the NBA draft is what I was basing it on for the draft day aspect. They have set time limits aswell and it is once again prime time TV for the most part.
