THE WESTERN Bulldogs are confident the talent in Saturday's NAB AFL Draft will run deep enough for them to benefit as the last club to have a 'live' pick.
The Dogs won't make a selection until late in the second round, having already dedicated their first pick (No.14) to father-son acquisition Ayce Cordy. They will then use picks 31 and 32 to recruit their other youngsters.
With a focus on key position players, the Bulldogs are hoping a pair of talented talls slips through to their late selections – and are confident there's a good chance of that happening.
"Everyone is going to guess about if there's going to be enough left by the time you get to your pick, but every year throws up some great players," assistant coach Leon Cameron said on Thursday.
"There's a fair bit of depth there so we're going to pick up some quality young kids.
"The depth is fantastic. There's a lot of talls and a lot of ruckmen, and a lot of key forwards and key backs.
"That suits us because we're trying to develop some key tall forwards, and we've got a couple here at the moment in Jarrad Grant and Jarrad Boumann, and we want to add to that so we can develop them in the next couple of years."
Last year, the Dogs added six players to their list during the NAB AFL Draft in a bumper crop of what they then labelled "mixed talent".
Two of their class of 2007 – Callan Ward (No.19) and Sam Reid (No.35) – went on to play senior football this season, with Ward unlucky to miss out on a spot in the finals side.
The Dogs are hoping they can unearth some more hidden talent outside the much-publicised top selections with their late picks this time around.
"Everyone would love a key forward, a key back or a midfielder, so I think if we could pick up a couple of them, it would be great for us," Cameron said.
"Scott Clayton and Rocket head up the draft situation with us, and it's obviously going to be great on Saturday afternoon when we add three new players to our list."
