Thanks for memories Official 2008 Draft/Trade Thread. You were truly a thread with a lot of replies compared to the average thread on WOOF.
All hail The Ben Hudson's Beard Appreciation Society, another hair follicle like feather in your might bear like cap.
A little film clip to remember the great 'Official 2008 Draft/Trade Thread'. Well worth clicking on.

I was thinking we could ask Robert Murphy if he would be the Patron of The Ben Hudson's Beard Appreciation Society. I suspect he might be quite keen and I think it is funnier if the patron is not actually Ben Hudson.
That's perhaps the funniest thing i've read on this site ever!
Will definitely buy a shirt noe, but should I wait for a charity to get chosen and the price to go up?
NB I also vote for the Les Twentyman idea. Solid suggestion.

If there was a choice between books & babies, surely you have to go babies, if for no other reason we were all one once & besides, they're cuter than books. Also babies are easier to garner support for.

Because babies have that ohhh factor, there are already a multitude of charities and events over the course of the calendar year. Whereas books and education sound boring and ho hum? The parents and children who cannot afford the necessary school supplies don't. The Twentieth Man is a new charity fronted by a bloke who's a legend in the West, who already has a football profile and has an existing connection with the Western Bulldogs.
I know this is all sounding like I have a personal stake in the Twentieth Man. I do in my own way. I owe Les Twentyman. I owe him my life. He changed me from a self-destructive menace to society, to someone who has the capacity to regularly be happy with his lot in life. When he (Les) nearly died recently, it made me realise that there was a part of me that felt I had yet to fully thank and repay the man. So I do apologise for flying the Twentieth Man flag so loudly.
So to prevent any bias, I propose that a shortlist of possible charities be presented to The Beard for his perusal and selection and that the Twentieth Man Foundation and "Beards for Books" be shortlisted.
Any opinions?
Also, my new long sleeved red IBWT arrived today. Waiting for the cool change to arrive so I can put it on and go for a blocky in it! Ah, the smell of vinegar will never again be associated with fish and chips, only Beard shirts will spring to mind!

It certainly sounds very worthy but beards for books doesn't grab me.
This needs to be funny and entertaining and it needs to have broad appeal that works quickly. Photos of babies with beards will get a lot more traction.
But at this stage I only have one expression of interest from anyone who wants to be involved so we aren't going anywhere yet.

We could put beards on famous authors, and book covers? I quite like both Beards for Books and Beards for Babies, it will be a tough choice.
Depending on the amount of time required (something I don't have an awful lot of, despite posting this at 2.20am), I am more than happy to help out with whatever is chosen.

Any would be a worthy cause. A short list a good idea! And again I'll help where and when needed.
Unfortunately at this stage I don't think we'll be making the BHBAS day out in round 2 (was so geared up for it too - with my new IBWT shird that I've modified to fit a a bit more girly!!)....but sadly it falls on Easter weekend and we have plans so will be away. Quite annoyed :(

It has to be Les Twentyman's charity we support, surely? It represents everything that's good about the West. In a lot of ways it's what the West is all about-supporting people who need help in a useful, practictible way.
Like DD says there's more babies charities than you can poke a stick at. I really, really like babies and all-I'm as clucky as the next man-but Les's charity does vital work right where it's needed and it needs all the help it can get. Any money we can raise will be more valued by Twentyman than most charities.
I'll dip into my extremely limited clothing budget and buy a long sleeved shirt if you nominate Les's charity.

When you say everything good about the West you mean drugs, refugees and that funny smell when you drive down Footscray Rd right?
I agree about the charity, I've got a new baby and I'm spending all my time with it already, so to donate money to other peoples babies seems silly. I imagine Les' name would gain a bit more traction within the club if we actually want Ben to be involved.

You're describing the ghettos of Sunshine, St Albans and as much as it pains me to say, having been norn and bred there, Footscray. Apart from those blights the West is a thriving vibrant area. Well let's say more parts are really good than are really bad but the influx of more and more money will make convenient places like the middle of Footscray unteneble for the druggies and other unsavoury practices in the end.

Sorry I was just showing some Eastern suburbs bias, it was meant as a joke. I live in the hills, there's as much drugs here as pretty much anywhere else.

Sorry I haven't logged on for a while (an entire week!). Had computer access issues. It seems I've stirred up a kerfuffle with my preferred choice of charity in the Twentieth Man, going up against the babies and a couple of breasts (no pun intended). All I ask that a decision be made soon as we need to work on event promotion and strategies very soon. Let us keep in mind that whatever the charity is selected, that we do them justice in our fundraising. I will put my hand up for some voluntary hours on a regular basis, in any capacity, to help out as I do have some free afternoons. I just need to What, Where and When and with Who. Let's get it started!! Long live the Beard!!

If I remember rightly, that piece of play ended in a 9 pointer. As part of the post-goal celebration, the Beard ran over, propped, leaned in and stuck up nine fingers and a couple of bushy brows to the smaller player he had beaten in the earlier contest. OK Here it is - the draft proposal for International Ben Hudson's Beard Day incorporating Beards for Babies. The good news is that Les Twentyman's 20th Man Foundation runs programs to support young mums and he has tentatively said he is interested in being given money! And he has a beard!
THIS IS IMPORTANT - PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH THE CLUB, PLAYERS OR THE MEDIA ABOUT THIS EVENT YET - Obviously this is a public board and they will find out anyway, however it is important that contact with the club, relevant players and the media is done via the IBHBD Management Sub Committee. We don't want to Collingwood this up. So calm heads please. Have a read of this DRAFT proposal, we can discuss it here, finalise it all and then THEN we will have something to take to the club. OK? Ok!
Who is the IBHBD Management Sub Committee? Excellent question. Do you want to be on it? I know I do. PM me if you do.
So far it is me and Comrade. I would expect DaDruid to join us and a couple of other people have suggested interest previously but I forget who so... speak now!
Because this is an ACTUAL THING which involves the club and the media and a real charity we are going to take the organisation moderately seriously. Seems sensible.
Anyway read the thing and lets see what you reckon.

Congratulations on a splendid DRAFT proposal. I live in Queensland and so it is not practical for me to nominate for the IBHBD Management Sub Committee, but it is such an impressive sounding and important organisation that I'm sure you'll be inundated with volunteers. I'd certainly like to assist if I can in other ways though.
I am prepared to commit to sell a minimum of 20 Beards if your DRAFT proposal is accepted - I know at least 10 people with a sense of humor and at least 10 Bulldogs supporters who are not WOOF members. I'll also get along to the event and make sure I bring a half dozen or so supporters with me.

Sadly, same as the above poster, i'm an interstate dogs fan so probably can't really halp from home.
MAYBE the interstate/old/infirmed etc beardies can particpate in the safety of their own longe rooms!
Maybe a rule is we cant watch the game on TV unless we beard up as well!
Good luck with this.
Also a slight suggestion, the charity aspect of it is a little vague, needs further clarification. Who do the funds really go to, what do they really use it for etc. Perhaps a statement or an attachment from Les would clarify that.

I am more than willing to nominate for a Sub-Committee role if I can get a seconder. I am also very happy that we have selected our charity of choice. Men and Women of Australia, it gives me considerable pleasure to note that today is the first (1st) anniversary of the founding of the Ben Hudson's Beard Appreciation Society.
Congratulations to everyone concerned and special thanks to easybeat for the considerable foresight.
Please join with me in a moment of silence, as we give thanks for The People's Beard and the show our gratitude to Woof for giving us the opportunity to be united in this pleasant pastime...

ANNIVERSARY ODE
Sat at home sipping bourbon and slightly celebrating,
The Beard Society's birthday and quietly comtemplating.
How my world has become wonderfully weird,
Since to my mohawk I have added a bushy Beard.
Things have moved at a cracking pace,
Since I began growing follicles across my face.
Life continues to be deliciously delightful,
For facial hair is totally cool.

Nicely put, as always Da Druid. You're a star, shining so bright in the spotlight right now! ;) Your beard has come along very nicely I must say (I speak from seeing it up close with a sweet little cheek to cheek kiss from you today!!)

I saw an article in the Herald Sun yesterday about footballers who work outside of footy. Ben Hudson & his Dad have bought into a coffee van franchise. The vans are in service station carparks and The Beard said he'll be working in the Sunshine one when it's up and going 1 day per week. Nice photo of The Beard with his coffee too. :D

Expecting a good turnout so do not dilly-dally and get there early if you can. Even if you do not have a Beard and want one for the game, I shall have some for sale for the unhirsute.

So much love for Benny Hhudson, maybe should all try and get Benny to win the most popular player the cheersquad is running...
Its 10c a vote, and the top 3 is announced at the best and fairest....with the most popular voted by the fans given an award on the night....
Just look out for the girls with a clipboard around the cheersquad area, or walking around the ground....

Great idea about the most popular player award.
That beard was the best 5 bucks i've spent in a long time. Absolute value. The banter you get with it is hilarious. I felt instantly more powerful upon donning the (people's pretend) beard. It ended up soaked in beer which gave it a wet cat look but still went on strong.

Actually, I was the one who missed the ball there. Thought that was for visiting members but stuffed up. My apologies to all who acted on the wrong info but do not apologise for complaining about the state of the bar service on Level 1 in the Ponsford Stand. Shocking effort by Spotless again. As for the new security company that has the MCG contract, they should not treat people like idiots just because they may look like one (mohawk, collar, etc) and as far as sitting down and being quiet, sorry, this is Australia. If I choose to whinge, so be my prerogative and my right as long as I keep it clean and not overstep the laws of this fine country.

He was sitting behind me in the grand stand from the second quarter onwards and was still there mid way through the third quarter when my mate and I headed around the wing area. Not sure how longhe stayed after that. He spent the whole time talking to Murp.

Gia on SEN after the game mentioned that Hudson is probably the best ruckman in the game apart from Sandilands.
Is there anyone that challenges this theory? Ottens is too injury-prone, and Jolley's been below his best so there has to be some merit in this argument.

Hille was going well until his injury and Cox has probably had a better season. Kreuzer, Jamar & Mumford have also been good
Change it to best stoppage ruckman though, as opposed to best overall ruckman, and you might have a case

I'll concede Jamar.
Cox started very slowly, Kreuzer plays completely differently and would be the no 2 if paired with Minson. Mumford was teh firm no 2 at Sydney until Seaby went down from what I saw and I still rate Hudson higher.
Hudson is very underrated by the football public outside of the Kennell.

Just given heads up from a source that there is some/one in the club who feel that the BHBAS have gone too far with the shirts and scarfs and such. He/she/they think that it is creating a distraction and putting Ben Hudson in a similar position as Akermanis and the Handstand and like the Handstand, it should be stopped. Even the copyright to Ben Hudson's image was expressed as an possible form of legal tactic. The People's Beard must go in order to kill off the Society and have "this rot over and done with!"?!??
Is Hudson to be told to shave?
What would this mean?
Where do we stand legally?

If this is true then I am really disappointed that a club would think this way. Fans love their players and a free to express their love in any way they feel. Its not the same as the handstand, that handstand is created by the player himself, its not as if Ben asked us to worship his beard.
Personally, I would ignore anything the club says, or any individual in the club.

True! However when we suggested Freo we weren't expecting to be an important game so maybe not Round 17! I am hoping to have a discussion with the Dogs Commercial Department this week so we will have an answer v soon either way. Please note, this necessary delay is all due to the Dog's timing rather than the management committee dragging their feet.

Please forgive my ignorance, but why do we need the club's permission to wear a false beard?

No we don't need their permission. But we thought it was good manners to ask. The delay is because they have some kind of process (which does seem to be taking a while) The first plan is to do something a bit more high profile and possibly involve the people's beard himself, raise some money for charity that sort of thing.
So we want the club's sign off on anything that they think might have an impact on the players. Remember, the object of the exercise is to win a flag. If the club decide that it is a bad idea for any reason, then we would need to consider that carefully before we did anything.
If the club don't want to get involved I imagine we will have a simple (and rather pleasant) Wear A Beard Day just for the hell of it. I am sure I will hear from them any day now and we will have an answer either way.

Don't be surprised if 'Akergate' has something to do with the club's current reticence to be seen to endorse an event which glorifies the individual over team (even if it is just tongue in cheek.) Our timing is just a little unfortunate imo.

Bumped into that "process"or one just like it myself just recently. Advocating on behalf of others and still waiting weeks after first contact was made. Had no reply whatsoever. None. Nil. Nada. Zip. Zero.

I just heard on SEN that the San Francisco Giants beat Texas Rangers in the first game of the World Series, with Giants pitcher Brian "Fear the Beard" Wilson closing out the final inning. They were discussing his beard and even said that it beat Ben Hudsons!!
It has become quite famous by the look of it, and he dyes it several shades darker than his hair. I bet he doesn't have a Brian Wilson's Beard Appreciation Society though!! Or a scarf!! ;)
What do you think? (Apologies for the small photo, I don't have photobucket). :o

I did actually get a call regarding this issue. And as the not at all official spokesbeard for the society I felt happy to speak on all of your behalfs as we just make it all up anyway.
I suggested that while Johnno had been good leader for the club it was obvious that we would not have any real success until we had proper leadership.
And that meant having the Beard as captain.
I said this had been one of the goals of our organisation for some time and even thought it hasn't it should have been so I said it was.
I also said that even if Ben Hudson had retired at the end of the year we would have expected the beard to play on. It was possible that Ben was even holding the Beard back and that it would actually do better without having to drag Huddo around behind it everywhere.
Finally I said that The Beard was the ideal replacement for Sam Newman on the Footy Show as it was more articulate and far more respectful to women.

It is official. The face of Ben Hudson is now no longer the location of The People's Beard. Huddo is clean shaven. Robert Murphy feels slightly slighted for not being involved in the decision-making process. Other members of the playing group thought there was a noob at training. Exactly. You can't keep a good beard down. And remember The Beard is a state of mind, it is more than the sum of it's individual follicles and thus transcends the laws of time and space, it is a force of nature and it will not be denied.

And training isn't until Satuday morning. The People's Beard might only miss one training session, not too badder impact on His preseason overall. Maybe the Footy Dept thought He needed a quick freshen up, after being in action year round nonstop for a few seasons. No offseason could be the contributing factor.
