Richmond appoint Jade Rawlings as new coach, replacing Terry Wallace (http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,25595960-23211,00.html)
Richmond have appointed Jade Rawlings as their caretaker coach for the rest of the AFL season.
Rawlings takes over from Terry Wallace, who coached the team for the last time on Friday night in the 68-point loss to the Western Bulldogs.
The 31-year-old has been working as an assitant to Wallace this season.
Rawlings is among five assistant coaches who were working under Wallace at Richmond this season.
Wayne Campbell, David King, Brian Royal and Craig McRae are the other assistants and Rawlings was seen as an outsider to take the senior job.
The 31-year-old key defender and forward played 145 games at Hawthorn, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs from 1996-2006.
He was the Western Bulldogs' leading goalkicker in 2004.
This year, Rawlings had been coaching Richmond's VFL affiliate Coburg as well as helping McRae at the club as a development coach.
Wallace announced on Monday that the Western Bulldogs game would be the last time he would coach Richmond.
He was in the last year of a five-year contract.
It has been a disastrous season so far for Richmond, who had been full of confidence after finishing ninth last year.
They have won only two out of 11 games this season.
Richmond last won their premiership in 1980 and have not made the finals since 2001.

Yes, how could I forget?
Seriously though, I really rate Jade Rawlings' footy brain. I remember when he first came to the Dogs, oddly enough he was injured and unable to play in a pre-season practice match, so he was coaching a few of the forwards. His instructions were great imo and I have been impressed by his media appearances.

The thing is that Richmond haven't named him as the replacement for Wallace and he is very much the interim coach at the moment. Given it was always going to be filled from their own current assistant coaches I think they have named the right person.
He's a likable guy and as you say he exhibits a real passion for the game. I guess his target would be to get 5 more wins for the balance of the season.

Why would you say that about Rawlings?
I've already spoken about this in the "Schadenfreude anyone" thread.
Not sure he has changed since he left Hawthorn with a known bung knee for money. Sooked when he didn't go to the club he wanted to. His effort and his whinging when he at the Bulldogs was typical.
No one could question Wallace's knowledge of the game when he started Richmond but he has the same problem as Rawlings in that both are ego and money driven more than anything.

Can't vouch for his oft-mooted 'footy brain', it'd want to be of Einstein-like proportions with "basket-case" he's inherited from Plough, but am acquainted with a couple who socialised reasonably regularly with the Rawlings' during his time at the Dogs.
Nothing I heard of his musings on the topic contradict that.

He looked to get a better deal in the final years of his playing career so you can hardly hold that against him. Not sure what the whinging is that you are referring to but from memory he got over the trade/draft thing quickly and he didn't screw us for the big dollars that you might think he did. I think you are drawing a long bow to say that he is ego and money driven.

Going for a 'Better deal' just confirms to me that he placed the dollars over honesty with himself and his clubs. He and Hawthorn both knew he knee was buggered, a one year deal was what should be expected in those circumstances.
He whinging all through the trade period that he wanted to go to North, when he knew he would be better off were ever he went. His efforts with us was highlighted in the Werribee finals.
The Rawlings as a player story has many similarities with the Wallace as a player story.

Hawthorn were working to a plan to clear the likes of Hay, Thompson and Rawlings so that they could acquire early draft picks and had no troubles finding interested parties.
Once Rawlings realised that the Hawks were not prepared to offer him decent market value he looked elsewhere. To compare him to Wallace is not accurate.

Decent market value? Any deal with a bung knee was going to be very good value for money for Rawlings. A one year deal was better than market value considering both parties knew the situation.
Hawthorn did what any club should do, trade players who have 'issues' when they can.
The similarities between Rawlings and Wallace to me are pretty obvious, leaving a good environment for the $, burning bridges as they go.

Rawlings coming to us is our fault for not doing the due diligence. If we knew his knee was bung that just makes the decision to get him worse. If a guy so obviously wants to go somewhere else why would you take him? Never understood that decision myself and I fully put the blame on the people at the helm for that mess.

In fairness to Rawlings though, a bung knee can most likely be fixed with an op and whatever time out for the healing process, he was only what, 26 at the time? I don't know about you, but if i knew i could continue on with my career, i'd definatly want to play on, and i would definatly want the best deal i can get.
It's like buying a house [have bought & sold 3 times], you make sure you get the best deal for yourself as you can get, you know there may be a few imperfections that might need some fixing, but as long as you know the house isn't rotted with white ants and falling down, you are going to do what you can to make yourself come up on top.
I'm sure our doctors had a decent look and "perhaps" said fine, he has a few issues there, but nothing we can't fix, otherwise you'd think we wouldnt have gone through what we did to get Rawlings had we thought his knee was completly shot!

Most likely? From what I heard he knee(s) were buggered and no op could fix them or fix them well enough to be as good as he was.

A few imperfections? A knee to a footballer is like the foundations of a house. I doubt you sold a house that was about to fall.

What, so your bascally telling me both us & North failed to see that his knees were completely done? in all the tests they do these days? If that is the case [rather than going on "what i have heard", then that just makes both clubs look like a dodgy used cars salesman living in Iraq, especially for the contract and what we gave up for his services!
There seems to be a bit both ways, on one hand, he was done, his knees were that bad that he couldn;t get out of first gear, then on the other hand, he just didn't give a toss on the field, if his knees were as bad as some suggest, then how the hell is he mean't to give 100%, NO ONE can play injured, doean't matter how much you try.
People will just find any excuse and run with it!

Congratulations to Jade Rawlings.
He comes across as a decent person and it is not fair if us Bulldogs fans criticise him for his time with the club. He openy stated that he didnt want to come to our club but we went ahead and trapped him through the pre-season draft.
Rawlings did the right thing though and had a dip but ultimately he wasn't the player that we were hoping to get and he ended up playing mainly in the seconds. Whose fault was this?..... not Jade's, but our recruiters. How I wish we had drafted a couple of tall kids instead of Jade and Veale.
Anyway, I consider he did the right thing but it just didnt work out.
All the best Jade.

Just doing a bit of trawling through the Internet, on the infamous "Veale Deal". Back in 2003, I must admit I was a Bulldog fan from a distance. Mainly read the papers to see what was going on. Anyway, I found an article in which then coach Peter Rohde said that Rawlings was "just the sort of player we need up forward"...
A defender? Hmm... says a lot, doesn't it?

Rawlings had a bung knee and Rhode wanted to play him at Centre Half Forward when he had played primarily as a defender for Hawthorn
Koops, Morgan, Veale, Rawlings, Street...the list goes on.......
All players we could have done without and gave up valuable draft picks because one 'genius' was more concernfocused on developing a rubber band/band aid solution to save his own skin
Hence why the senior coach shouldnt be the primary decision maker for recruitment + selection

The previous season Rawlings played CHF for Hawthorn and was one of the AFL leading marks for the season. Kicked about 40 goals that year and polled 11 votes in the brownlow, so was in top form. I remember being very excited he was coming to the dogs. He actually had a big year in 2004, have a look at his record.

2005, played very few games due to injury and that was that.
All you posters are very clever in hindsight, but if you wound back the clock, and knowing we were looking for a power forward, you would do the same thing all over again.

Best of luck to Jade - bizarre that he potentially will coach his brother in law later in the year who happens to be 3 years older than him.
It's been mentined that he's only the interim coach - it seems that it's assumed that he has no chance next year (as in it's almost been agreed to) ...is this really the case? Why would he take it if he thought he'd have no hope of getting the gig full time?

It's not that he has no chance just that this is not an audition as such. They said they will do a full review and new selection process once the season ends, which for Richmond is always after round 22.
At this point being 2-9 surely Richmond have to tank for the rest of the year.

To clarify...if there was one aspect of Rawlings' game that would routinely shit me to tears it was his habitual disinclination to 'present' as you'd otherwise like a key forward to.
His efforts on the lead inside forward-50, on the rare occasions he'd bother, were abysmal, and he preferred to leave such initiatives to blokes of lesser stature who otherwise should have been crumbing off him. I know he wasn't the archetypal power forward, but as a key target he played distinctly like a man who didn't want the footy coming anywhere near him.
Apologies for being unnecessarily cryptic..and right you are, that generous beak of his would also fit the bill admirably!

As much as I like Richo, I'm hoping Grant can snare a few games next year after a big pre-season instead.

So bye bye Richo?

Richo is an old man who has injury problems. If we wanted him Chris Grant would still be playing

I don't mind Bowden as a player and he has the potential to do other things with football but on top of that his form hasn't been too bad.
Simmonds has dropped off a lot this year and obviously won't be around next year.
I think Bowden has suffered alot from being in a team like Richmond who have very much under achieved, put him in a decent side, he could even be a very good Cornes style CHB without having to dish off countless meaningless stats, or even a hit up medium sized forward.

I remember talking to TCD after we played Richmond earlier in the year. I told him that Tambling should go to another club as the tiger supporters are 'gunning' for him as he was an early draft pick and had not lived up to expectations. In fact, I thought if he was delisted by the tigers, he would be a good pickup for another club, he just lacked belief in himself in part due to the tiger ferals!
He was not backing himself and was constantly turning the ball over early in the season.
Well, in the last month or so he has played alot better and I do not believe that he is as bad as people make out him to be. Against WCE, his run and carry was impressive, and I hope for his sake that he continues his form.

Bit a put down for Grant.
Chris Grant with a walking stick would be twice the player as Richo.

I was at the round 1 game and he totally set the tone dropping a sitter dead in front of Carlton's goal early on - and yes he's been really poor this year.
I'd still look at him for a forward post next year though.......I always hesitate to write who I'd look at, I thought Leigh Brown was worth looking at last year as well which no-one was really a fan of, and he's holding down a regualr spot at Collingwood and looking a lit trimmer. I reckon he'd be playing senior footy if on our list, maybe Simmonds could next year.

Bowden is probably good enough to hold his position, but he isn't the future so it's time to look at other options.
Richmond have made the correct call here as they need to fast track their kids and rid the team of the senior players who aren't part of their long term plans.

How many senior games have the 2 of them played this year?
You know the reasons why they are still on the list and I'm sure they will struggle to be on our list come the start of the 2010 season as our young KPP's & rucks continue to develop in the 2nd part of this season.

Just heard Rawlings on SEN (press conference earlier in the day) quite impressive actually. Re-iterated it's a caretaker role but didn't rule out getting the gig full time next year, saying those decisions will be made at the end of year and based on his performance in the next 12 weeks.
I'd give him a genuine chance

Well done Jade Rawlings - happy for him personally, couldn't give a toss about the Tiges. Still don't think he'll get the gig next year. Unless the Tiges win 8-10 games over the remainder of the year...

Watched the last 10 minutes or so and they should be well pleased with the result. I hope they get a few more wins because I don't want them to get the option of a priority pick if that was at all possible. ;)

Ha ha and get them into the finals. Personally if he wins 4-5 games over the remainder of the year he has exceeded expectations. Definitley in the running for the gig IMO.

Reckon once the honeymoon period with the new boss is over, the "Tigers of old" will creep back to old habits. How ironic that song is now... and Jordan McMahon said one of his mates told him one benefit of leaving the Dogs was that he'd be going to a club with a good song - one the players never get to sing!

Congratulations Jade. An impressive first up win.
If you get a 'freebie' first up, I guess you could do worse than the Eagles who were 0-16 on the road in their last 16 trips coming into this game.

I know it is all ifs and buts, but if the team Richmond selected played one of the top 6 teams in the competition I am pretty sure they would have been handed a 6+ goal loss.
A couple of more wins means no priority pick.... I hope they keep winning.:D

Noted Rawlings' post-game comments with interest.
According to Jade there's a lot of "really positive" things happening at the club, he only saw fit to make a few subtle tweaks to their typical modus operandi the past week because that's all that was really required, and the place "doesn't need a major overhaul".
Well, that's that then. As you were.
