Supercoach team is all injured so bored when stuck @ home watching nuetral games of footy?
Do you agree that the Dogs cant finish first or second?
Do you agree that we just MUST finish top 4?
Ever wondered who to barrack for in every single game?
Here's all you need, the 2009 "T&T who to Root for thread"
I will update this EVERY WEEK (probably)
And yes, it is quite probable that towards the end of the year I may change some of these calls.

I like it :) Nice thread
I'm not 100% convinced (maybe 99%) we can't finish Top 2 at the Saints expense, look how they have struggled against North and Brisbane the last two weeks and they are yet to be badly hurt by injuries. We would probably have to take 5 games off them with their percentage though so huge ask. Having said that I don't care given the first week of finals will be at Docklands/MCG and we would just play the Saints anyway if it were 3rd v 2nd as opposed to 2nd v 3rd. Hardly seems fair to sides who are unbeaten 4 games clear :D
There may be something to be said for finishing 3rd as opposed to 4th though to play the Saints rather than Geelong in week 1 of the finals if the Saints do have a slump in the second half of the year. Geelong have proven consistency over 2.5 seasons but the Saints' depth is untested and like us they only won one final last season against a non-top 4 side. Yes you would probably still have to play Geelong anyway in the Grand Final, but maybe the Saints or Hawks could take them out for us and maybe they would be haunted by the ghosts of the 2008 final on the big stage. Also I would rather build up to taking on Geelong in the Grand Final after a week off than having to beat them twice, missing the week off if losing the first time.
So I am looking for a few things in the second half of the year in neutral games -
- Geelong and St Kilda to play poorly, whether winning or losing (not going to wish injuries and suspensions on them but if they happen I won't complain :D)
- Other Top 3/Top 4 threats (I would say Carlton down to Collingwood 4th to 9th at the moment, all the sides on 6-5 assuming Collingwood beat Melbourne) to drop games
- Hawthorn in particular to struggle, being probably the biggest threat to us for the flag outside Geelong and the Saints
Regarding the tips, I wouldn't mind seeing Freo take down the Cats next week as at 3-8 they are not a top 4 threat but if they can win at home through the remainder of the year that would take games off Carlton, Brisbane and Port in particular who are top 4 contenders
Richmond v West Coast - neither side will be a threat so I am happy to stick with wanting Richmond to lose there :D

Just witnessed the best Down Hill skiing, basket ball match of all time Adelaide Essendon.
That footy can win home and away games but not finals.
I'd say top 2 is gawn, now we hope geelong and Stkilda keep winning and knock over sides around us.Hopefully the sides out of contention [dare I say Richmond] can also upset the applecart. Is it just me or when the Blue Cheats win their imbocilic fans come out of their trees and begin chest beating.

Its not just you mate, I can hear it from South Australia. After they were pumped by the Cows, most had not only jumped off the wagon but burnt it as they left... DOnt want to see them in the top 4 please.

A couple of things I want to fall our way. Carlton to finish in the bottom half of the 8 along with Hawthorn, with Brisbane/Collingwood to finishing fourth. We play the Saints for first final, beat them and wait for the looser out of Brisbane/Collingwood, play them and we are in the GF against Geelong, unless Collinwood pulls out a game against the Cats and wins.
I don't want Carlton to finish top four because we seem to struggle against them, and I don't want to leave anything to chance. There bandwagon jumpers would be out in force as well:mad:
Do I want us to beat the Saints and Geelong, not sure, if we lose to both again that will give those team a false sense of security when they come up against us in finals, and then we should wack them.
I am really happy as to how we are travelling, there is no pressure on us to not lose a game as there is with the Saints and Geelong, we are still not playing our best footy, but we are playing good footy and I would expect us to win the next four games. No serious injuries has been a bonus, and with Hudson and Aker in good form it makes a huge difference to our game.

Could be heard all over Melbourne. Upset the wildlife out our way. They will just have settled down when it starts again.
What do we have a zoo for when these types run free?

Two thirds of the way through the round
have jist invented a points system. where "most important" is 8 points, second is 7, so on
that means 36 points up for grabs each week
(8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1)
Round 12, in order of my preference...
DOGS v Port 8 points
Carl v St K 7 points
HAW v BL 6 points

Using my recently invented points system. where "most important" is 8 points, second is 7, so on

We got:
DOGS v Port 8 points

HAW v BL 6 points
Adel v NM nope
SYD v Coll nope
ESS v Melb nope
Free v Geel 2 points
Rich v WCE 1 point
24 points out of a possible 36, think that's fairly good.

Can I ask again why you wanted Geelong to beat Freo out of curiosity.
I would have though it would be better for us if Freo won
All of this is fine...but if we just keep winning games wont the rest of it sort itself out?

The Essendon/Collingwood game is huge. If The Pies win, they're going to be hard to stop from making the Top 4.
The Dons are an improving side with plenty of pace, I wouldn't completely discount them either.
For some reason I don't think Adelaide and Brisbane will quite make it to the Top 4.
If we topple Hawthorn, IMO their season is gone.

My two cents - the first 4 picks are home teams so hopefully we get some good results
8. WB v Haw
Hopefully we are back to our best after blowing out the cobwebs and fired up to make amends for the QF last year
7. Rich v Adel
Richmond out of finals contention, Adelaide fighting for top 4
6. Port v BL
Brisbane a top 4 contender, Port in 10th
5. Freo v Carl
Freo out of finals contention, Carlton on 6 wins
4. Coll v Ess
Collingwood a top 4 contender, Essendon in 7th though also in the mix
3. St K v Geel
Interesting one. Probably splitting hairs more so than the last two games but has more possibility of affecting our season
Geelong's lower percentage means they are closer to us, but they are proven over 3 seasons now and the Saints are the more likely side to lose a few and allow us to catch up. There is no difference between finishing second and third, but it may make finishing top 4 easier if they really collapse. The more likely factor however is that a Geelong win would help them finish top and the Saints second, allowing us to play the Saints in week one of the finals if we hold on to third, which I would prefer to playing Geelong, particularly if they lose a few and coast into 2nd like we did into 3rd last year
In any case it should be a good one to watch
2. Syd v NMFC
5 and 4 wins respectively, not much threat to top 4
1. Mel v WCE
Neither side in final 8 contention

High contact after being late to a mark contest.
I think he will be OK. Only chance of missing would be if he had high carry over points.
He has hurt his hand though and has been on the bench since. Not sure of the specific injury, probably split webbing looking at him.

Aside from my hatred of all things filth, not sure which result will favour us in the long run. All I know is that a draw would be an absolute disaster because we have both teams well covered from a percentage perspective, so a draw will effectively take percentage out of the equation and keep both teams hot on our heels (even if we win this week), instead of one team dropping a full game and percentage off the pace.

Must say, my preferred option here is Collingwood to win. They have the easier draw so I want Brisbane to lose a few.

Not sure Collingwood has as soft a draw as everyone is making out.
Dogs have left:
Freo (Etihad)
West Coast (Etihad)
Brisbane (Gabba)
Geelong (Etihad)
Collingwood (Etihad)
Collingwood has:
Brisbane (MCG)
Adelaide (AAMI)
Richmond (MCG)
Swans (MCG)
Dogs (Etihad)
Brisbane has:
Collingwood (MCG)
Essendon (MCG)
Dogs (Gabba)
Port (Gabba)
Swans (SCG)
Adelaide has:
Geelong (KP)
Collingwood (AAMI)
Hawthorn (MCG)
West Coast (AAMI)
Carlton (Etihad)
The perfect scenario for us in the next 2 weeks would be for Collingwood to beat both Brisbane and Adelaide in the next 2 weeks, and hope that Brisbane loses to Esendon next week and Adelaide loses to Geelong this week. Those results will give us a 2 game and percentage buffer in the top 4 (assuming we beat the tanking teams), and with 3 games left, just about home and hosed in the top 4.
We have 2 games left against the tanking teams and Adelaide has one - by contrast, all of Brisbane's and Collingwood's remaining fixtures are live to some degree. Even Richmond will be a tough opponent when they play Collingwood as they will be going hell for leather now that the PP is out of ther equation, players are playing for their lives and the coach is pressing hard to make the job his next year. Port and the Swans will be the wildcards because they might be out of finals calculations by Round 21, which will give Collingwood and Brisbane (x2) soft games in the last 2 weeks.

Following our costly loss to Collingwood, Brisbane at the Gabba was always going to be the pivotal fixture - it will determine our fate in relation to the double-chance.

Not if we can defeat Collingwood in round 22. As TCD suggested one win between rounds 20-22 should get us over the line. A win would be preferable against our direct competition, Brisbane or Collingwood.

I'd love to have a top 4 spot essentially sewn up before Round 21. Not jumping through hoops at the thought of Sunday twilight in Round 22 being a bruising affair if it becomes a must-win game to make top 4.

Have to agree with that Sedat.
If we can win our next 3 and get to 14 wins with our healthy percentage advantage (which should increase over the next 2 weeks) we should be assured of a top 4 finish.

Demetriou today said that they are looking at changing our Round 22 game to the Saturday at 4.10pm. Switching the Carlton Adelaide game.
I think there is more to this. They never change games, just look at Geelong v St Kilda a couple of weeks ago. If there are 3 Melbourne finals and they can't play a final in Melbourne on the Friday, then a Saturday final will have to be at Etihad. I don't think the AFL want to give Etihad anything.

As discussed earlier in the thread, Collingwood's victory over Brisbane might end up being the perfect result for us - if we beat West Coast this week, Collingwood can knock off Adelaide, and Essendon bounce back and beat Brisbane, we will be 2 games and a hefty slice of percentage clear in the top 4 at the end of Round 19.

Port have Carlton (home) and Brisbane (away) in rounds 20 & 21, I can see them letting Hawthorn back into calculations. Hawthorn is 0.1% up on them now and so would probably have them on percentage if they do win 1 game more than Port in the last 4 rounds

Brisbane's draw was as good as a win with their poor percentage. Had Essendon not pissed 2 premiership points down the drain in the last minute and a half, and had we not pissed 4 premiership poijts down earlier today, we would have been 2 games and percentage clear in the top 4 right now. Now we are scrapping it against 3 other clubs (including Carlton). Truth be told, we deserve nothing less after what was probably the worst 45 minutes of football I've seen from a Bulldog team since the Royce Hart days.
Today was an unmitigated disaster for our club.

Only that the theory suggests we cannot beat St Kilda. If that's the case i'd prefer going out first week and getting a lower pick.
Sedat, your comments as usual as poignant and precise. 'Unmitigated disasted' in deed. Dark day for this group of players, very dark day.

Sorry if I am giving too much time to semantics but I had it as our most disappointing rather than worst 45 minutes of football. I've seen us play worse, we actually still created opportunities in those 45 minutes. It was the most disappointing 45 minutes due to the team's talent and my expectations of them.

I would rather go into a semi-final having won an elimination final than losing a qualifying final.
Obviously I would rather come 4th than 5th though because it means you are at least guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals.

You're right, disappointing is the better term.
I was watching 2 teams out there today. One of them won a flag 3 years ago, have stunk it up in the last 2 years as they rebuild the list, tank for all their might until last week, put their best players out to pasture, and yet (based on today's game) West Coast look closer to a premiership that we do.
Sometimes it hurts like hell supporting this club.

Our 2007 thrashing at the hands of the Eagles was mentioned on the pre-game radio coverage. I turned to my partner and said something about how quickly things have changed and that we would be delivering a similar thrashing today. When we were down by 46 points the old saying about the more things change, the more they stay the same was going through my head.

After tonight's result, I would prefer the Lions to beat Port for a couple of reasons.
1/ Would like to see the Lions and Crows displace Carlton in the top 6 to get home finals. If we lose our QF, I would love to play an interstate side in Melbourne in the semis.
2/ Gives Swans more motivation against Collingwood.

Almost best case scenario if we can't displace Collingwood.
A more broad question to one and all, if you're a doggies player on the verge of finals, do you go in 110% and hope be beat Collingwood by 40pts or whatever to steal 3rd, or is the subconscious telling you not to get hurt and keep your place. I'm not saying the players wont try, but the subconscious is pretty powerful and i wonder what the main motivation would be?
Perhaps with the win over Geelong, the boys will want to have a crack at them first up and bust a pooper valve tryin g to get that 1st week matchup?

Given our contrasting results against Geelong and St Kilda this year I would suggest we will be pretty focused on 3rd spot. It's not going to be 40 points unless the Swans capitulate tomorrow, but I don't think we will take the foot off the pedal

In a word, no. The Pies are flying, and probably have assumed the mantle of the second best team in the comp from Geelong.

Being the cool cat that I am, I have played around with Collingwood's potential percentage tomorrow. If Collingwood win by 1 pt and Sydney score 89 points or more, we will go into 3rd at the end of the round.
For those following tomorrow's Pies vs Swans game and our chase for 3rd, here's a bit of a rough guide. Assuming the Pies win tomorrow, for every 2 points they win by we will have to beat them by an extra point. For example, if they beat the Swans by 30 points, we will need to beat them by 15 points next week.

I'm more than happy to resurrect this thread for the finals, on behalf of T&T who has done a sterling job during the H&A season:
Ade v Ess
Geel v WB
BL v Carl
St K v Coll
The first 3 matches are self-explanatory, and St Kilda would be the preferred victor in the other QF as it would leave the Pies and Bombers in our half of the prelim final draw if we beat the Cats. The above results would leave Coll v Ess and Geel v BL as the semi finals the following week.

Geel v WB
BL v Carl
St K v Coll
Geel v WB
Geelong
If we are to lose and the Saints win, we will go into the St Kilda side of the draw. I see St Kilda as our biggest threat and can see a benefit in getting them earlier (prelim) rather than later (GF) before they can build up a head of steam again. I think we can handle either Brisbane or Carlton, and playing every week could help keep us in good form as opposed to having the week off and being less battle hardened
WB
The week off is crucial, and the confidence priceless from a win. Winning puts us 2 wins from a premiership as opposed to 3 if we lose. Plus putting Geelong and (assuming they win) St Kilda in the same half of the draw means we may not even have to play the Saints at all if Geelong can take them out.
Adel v Ess
Adelaide
If Adelaide win there is more chance that St Kilda or Collingwood could go out in straight sets. I am confident against Adelaide, especially in Melbourne, but if they can manage to take out one of the top 4 I think that will help us.
Essendon
If Essendon win then the 5th placed finisher and our PF kryptonite is out and the side that beat the Pies on ANZAC day and the Saints in round 20 faces them in their home state to possibly take out one of the top 4 sides and leave us with the 8th placed finisher in the PF.
BL v Carl
Brisbane
If we lose then Brisbane would need to travel down to Melbourne to play us. They have a few players out and we beat them in round 20 up in Brisbane. Carlton beat us in their only meeting this year.
Carlton
We tend to struggle against sides with two big forwards, and Morris and a hard time on Bradshaw in round 20. Tom Williams may not be ready for week 2 of the finals to help out. The players Brisbane have out now may be back by week 2. Carlton have had a somewhat inconsistent year losing by 10+ goals last week with a home final on the line and may be an easier opponent if we were to lose.
St K v Coll
St Kilda
A Saints win would ensure if we win ourselves that we don't need to face them until the GF, and that Geelong would be on their side of the draw. Our win over Collingwood last week would give us great confidence against them in a PF
Collingwood
With St Kilda possibly our biggest threat, denying the Saints the week off would be a big step towards September success for us. Collingwood in the GF would not intimidate us after last week's win
Who I want to win:
Ade v Ess
Geel v WB
BL v Carl
St K v Coll
Who I think will win:
Ade v Ess
Geel v WB
BL v Carl
St K v Coll
