The history of the WOOF Player Awards

The WOOF Player Awards began in 2007.

There are two categories of voting –

Joe Marmo Medal – The allocation of voting in this category is on a 4, 3, 2, 1 basis – based on the best players in each round, 4 votes being the highest. Votes are cast after the completion of our game in each round.

The Marmo was chosen as the identity of the WOOF players awards because of his tough uncompromising football and he was obviously someone who embraced the true Bulldogs spirit.

Described by his illustrious contemporary Ted Rowell as "a great specimen of an athlete" (see footnote 1), Joe Marmo enjoyed a distinguished two decade football career with four clubs in two states (formerly known as colonies). Born at Port Arlington, he joined Geelong as a seventeen year old in 1888. During the 1890s, in common with a large number of other Victorian and South Australian footballers of the era, he ventured west, playing initially with West Perth, whom he helped to the 1897 premiership, and later with Ted Rowell's goldfields club Hannans.

In 1899, Marmo returned home to Victoria, where he embarked on by far the lengthiest and most significant stint of his playing career at VFA power side Footscray. In twelve seasons with the Tricolours, he established himself as a powerful and fearless centre half back, playing "a big man's game with the fleetness of a rover" (see footnote 2). He was a member of three Footscray premiership teams, captained the side in 1905, and was vice-captain for most of the remainder of his time at the club. Almost forty years of age when he retired from playing in 1910, he remained in the game as an umpire for another three seasons.

Ron James Medal – The allocation of voting in this category is on a 2, 1 basis and this is for our best two young players for each game. The pups are players that are aged 22 years and under as at the beginning of each year.

The James was chosen as our encouragement medal for younger players because he was a football prodigy.

Ron James first created headlines when selected to play in Williamstown's senior side for the 1985 Grand Final as a 14 year old. Ron had spent the 1985 season playing in the Williamstown under 19 side. Ron had an immediate impact in the Grand Final and was part of the Williamstown side which lost by 6 points.

The following year in 1986 Ron was a member of the Williamstown Premiership side as a 15 year old. In 1987 Ron joined Footscray where he played 16 senior AFL games between 1987 and 1989 and was beginning to establish himself as a regular player.

Tragically Ron was killed on New Years Day, 1990 in a water skiing accident.

VOTING RULES

There are two Awards that you can vote on.

The first one is for the Joe Marmo Medal for the best players on the ground.

There are 4 votes allocated and it's a 4 for the best and of course 3, 2 and 1.

The second award is for the Ron James Medal for the best 2 pups on the ground.

The pups are any players under the age of 22 as at 01/01/10. There are two votes allocated here 2 & 1

Please note: - No half votes will be accepted in either voting category.

Each week I will place a thread up highlighting the game to be played that week and after the game, the votes get placed in that particular thread.

You can vote in just the Marmo if that is your preference however, we would appreciate if you could vote in both categories.

Cut off time to place your votes is every Tuesday after the game and closing time will be around 8.00pm. Any variations to the cut off date will be advices in advance.

Also there will be a Woof Player Award Leader board and each week there will be a progressive tally on how the voting is going.

For any of our newer posters that have joined up, if you have any questions etc, please feel free to send me a PM.

Players that qualify for pup selection as at 01/01/10 and were under the age of 22 are listed below along with the rookies......

Jarrod Boumann, Ayce Cordy, Jamason Daniels, Andrejs Everitt, Jarrad Grant, Jarrod Harbrow, Shaun Higgins, Josh Hill, Andrew Hooper, Christian Howard, Liam Jones, James Mulligan, Matthew Panos, Eddie Prato, Sam J Reid, Jordan Roughead, Brennan Stack, Jason Tutt, Callan Ward, Easton Wood.

Thanks for that comprehensive wrap-up, BB. Interesting to see how our voting has gone in the past few years. I have one question: are the winners notified, and how or when or what do they get for it? Cheers!

Always a very interesting, and well run award, look forward to it again this year.

Will be interesting to see how the previous James winners go in the Marmo this year - I'd be fairly confident of Griffen, Higgins and Cooney (who has already claimed the Marmo) giving it a good shake.

Thanks Lantern, I had my assistant GVG assist me with this thread :D, so I can't take all the credit. To answer your question - no - we haven't notified previous winners but it won't hurt to do that this year, so I will look into that. As for what do they get for winning...well bragging rights for the year.

Thanks Griff, much appreciated. Yes, that's what I like about the voting in two separate voting categories you get to watch how the previous James winners go.

Very much a midfielders medal here on planet WOOF. :)

In the words of the great Keenan Reynolds "what about the backman?" :)

Outstanding thread there Bulldog Belle and I will make sure I get my votes in every week.

There will be a WOOF Player Awards finals version - I will place up the voting format on Saturday. It will be based on a 3,2,1 vote - same as last year.

I think it's a pretty fair reflection on the season, i think Cooney will poll well on Brownlow night & easily top the list for the club.

Harbrow had a pretty solid season as well, injury & form drop late in the year, allowed Grant to storm home to finish one short.

Thanks MG, :)

It's all a bit of fun that we can all enjoy - I look forward to the votes and especially when the Best and Fairest has been completed, it's interesting to see how our votes here on WOOF compare to the Clubs.
