Al Paton - Herald Sun - 23 August
RODNEY Eade's attack on the SCG surface reeks of a double standard after he refused to blame the Etihad Stadium surface for injuries, Jason Akermanis said today.
Former Bulldog Akermanis said the players were upset Eade had not taken a stand on the Etihad surface after young midfielder Shaun Higgins suffered an ankle injury earlier this year.
Article in full... (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/aker-blasts-eades-double-standard-on-cooney-injury/story-e6frf9jf-1225908848895)
Akermanis also said he was in good enough shape to return to play for the injury-hit Dogs in the finals, but he didn't want to.
"I could easily go to training and see how it (the body) is.
"But stuff that. Why would I want to go back to that miserable job?
"The minute they rang me I'd say piss off."

Forget Akermanis for the moment but was anyone else surprised by the clubs quiet approach to the injury of Higgins at the time?
I think we have stepped back from making any real criticism of the Domes surface

My respect for this guy keeps heading south, I wont be making any allowances for him anymore, once we get the 'I told you so' article respect will be in the minuses. Kick a dog when its down, weak as James Cumings p!ss (no offence JC).

I was very, very suprised. If he continues to have ankle problems throughout his career do you think he will go after compensation when he retires?
Shaun Rehn was involved in a lawsuit (after he retired I recall) because of the old bounce plates in the middle of the ground. You might remember the game at Football Park where he stepped and slipped and his leg buckled under him in a ruck contest.

I suppose I was sort of leaning more towards how unlikely we are to criticize the dome than I was about considering potential law suits etc.
I wonder if a more respected media rep than Aker drew the same conclusion about the different approaches the club made about the Higgins and then the Cooney surface related injuries if our supporters would have viewed things differently?
I wish he would just shut up but I'm not sure if he is off the mark or not with this issue.

Why do we care?
He has a job on radio to make comments, so thats what he is doing and will continue to do. I don't see the point in bagging the guy everytime he makes a comment we don't like cause there will be plenty to come.
I agree with GVGjr on this one.

I was 100% certain that we put in an official compliant about Shaun's ankle injury due to the shifting surface at Etihad. Here is the link to the article proving once again that Aker is talking garbage.

There's a difference between making comments we don't like & being a malicious muckraker who's factually incorrect!

Whether his comments are correct or not I'm not sure why we give a toss. Most of the posts i read say 'shut up aker' like he is doing a good job at getting under our skin. To me he is like that mate that everyone has that likes to rile you up by saying how crap we are or how we won't be around in 20 years. That stuff got under my skin when I was at high school but now if that person wants to say shit about the club I worship just to get a response out of me, then its just not worth responding to.

I thought we had made an official complaint too. I remember the AFL doing something when Chris Judd got injured, and hadn't when Shaun Higgins did.
Thanks for the post Flamethrower. :)

Aker has failed to do his homework on this as stated the club lodged an official complaint ! I just love it how Aker is "entitled to his opinion " yet it doesn't seem to concern him or his lessoning cheer squad whether he's right or wrong!I know radio titanic needs some ratings but can the potty mouth twerp get his facts right.
Btw I'm just looking for Western Bulldogs/Footscray in the death notices. Honestly the media negativity is in overdrive:(

Yes, I was agreeing with Flamethrowers post & link that we had put in a complaint. I also meant that the AFL didn't seem to do much until Judd got injured. Sorry, the written word can be so confusing!! ;)

Aker spoke about Eade's reaction to the Higgins injury. At the time, Eade was rather diplomatic in not pointing the finger (unlike Aker, who willingly points it). Yes, The Club put complaints in, but Rocket himself was very non-committal.

After Cooney's injury, he came out and directly blamed the SCG surface. That is what I believe Aker is referring to with his "double standard" line. A bit like his own double standard in calling Johnno selfish for playing hurt after admitting he'd done the same thing early in the year. Anyway, main point wasn't Aker's honesty - it was that if someone else had made the same comments, the reaction would be very different.
Maybe I'll just lurk from hereon, unless I'm certain my views are in agreeance with others.

Nobody else made those comments, what does that tell you?
I just looked at it as though the club & Eade were frustrated, having seen another player go down. They thought that it was another surface issue & this time felt the need to publicly point it out, nothing more.
