As it's our most famous number, i reckon that we should hold off on giving it out at all...any player that is given it should have to earn it...Conns and Griff have, but i think they'll stick with the numbers they have.

Would love Cooney, guaranteed gun so its in safe hands. Liam Jones would be my second choice if we prefer to keep it in the hands of a key position player.

Is that true? I would love that if it was.

He's saying, "Johnno's great, but I wanna be the best". In fact, even if it isn't true, in my mind that's exactly what happened.

Even better is (unless this conversation took place in the last 15 mins) Picken must have said, "no Johnno's great, but I wanna be the best, I'll have number 3, you'll have to do something about the bloke wearing it currently"

In recent times the club has allocated the number 3 to classy type players. With all due respect to Picken who is a very good player who gives his all, I would think a Ward or perhaps Jones in 12 months time.

LostDoggy
07-10-2010, 12:58 PM
They simply have to hang up number 3 for awhile to see if a worthy player emerges. That number means far too much to just give it out willy nilly. It's easy now in hindsight to say that it was given to Dre with too much haste but he really did look like he was going to be something special.

Would we need to give it to anyone?

Emerging players may generally like to honour the number that they've began to make a name with. We've seen what happened with giving that number to Evs. Couple of years later and it's trade bait 9no idea why he was given it int he first place)

Maybe young Libba or Wallis - players just starting out, if any.

I want whoever wears it to be 100% heart, 100% commitment and 100% about the Bulldogs. Couldn't care less how classy they are. Griff's all class and I don't think he'd make a good number 3.

Played injured this finals series and was still our best player, won our B&F, re-signed when offered big money elsewhere... What else do you want from him?

You would imagine it is out of the following:

14. Callan Ward: Hard at it with a touch of class, big future and potential leader. 14 is already a good number though.

16. Ryan Griffen: Probably the best candidate for mine, except he has made 16 his number already.

17. Adam Cooney: Best player at the club, leadership member, classy. Has already established himself in 17 though.

19. Liam Jones: Potential pack marking hopefully dominant CHF, but like Everitt could struggle to improve on his first season (which hasn't been that impressive at AFL level). Probably too early.

23. Jordan Roughead: Classy and with a big future. I don't really envisage him in either 3 or 6 though, but could see him in 14 if Ward upgraded.

29. Easton Wood: Exciting, tough, young and with lots of potential. I can see him in number 6 more than 3 though.

38. Dale Morris: Whilst he has made 38 his own, would not be out of place in either 3 or 6 as a courageous, consistent performer who is part of the leadership group.

42. Liam Picken: Tough and unforgiving, his lack of class probably makes him more of a number 6 than 3 in my eyes.

And one who hasn't been talked about to my knowledge:

12. Tom Williams. Just thought of him as I went through the numbers. Could he be an outside chance? Big and strong, fairly physical, an important member of our side for a long time and highly rated.

What about giving the number to the captain?? Guaranteed to be a proven player, leader and 100% committed to the dogs! Would be similar to what Richmond do with 17, a great honor to get Captain Bloods jumper and it should be a honour to wear Teddys.

I'm not a fan of that. I'd prefer a player to wear it for a long period of time regardless of his leadership role within the club. Port Adelaide do this too btw.

My guess the numbers will be allocated as follows:

3 - Jones

6 - Ward

14 - Picken

19 - Vesper

21 - Sherman

24 - Wallis

33 - Shakira

39 - Libba

I agree with all of those, except Ward & Picken, i'd like to see Picken given 6, 14 is already a good number for Ward, would be great to see Jones wearing 3 at CHF for the next 10 years, at least he is a KPP where's Everitt was really a tall flanker.

I think I was a bit misunderstood/didn't make myself clear enough.

I was referring more to the type of player I'd like to see in the number 3. Granty was all class, but he was also everything else, and was a fine #3. What I was getting at, is that giving it out on ability alone is not the right way to go. It's not just any old number.

I reckon #6 would be a better number to reserve for the captain. Charlie Sutton wore it, Brad Johnson wore it-it seems like a good fit.

Don't like the idea of a captain always having the same number, Imagine Hawkins,Grant or Johnson having to change numbers when they were made captain.

Hello all, I've been very out of the loop - and haven't really had a look at WOOF for a couple of months - so my apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere and is 'old news'.

But my partner and I had our first child a couple of months ago (hence - no time for WOOF) and he has been getting plenty of Bulldogs gear - and just yesterday we received a Bulldogs money box that Picko had organised to be signed by the guys that are in his cuirrent training group.

Anyway, I couldn't help by notice one of the signatures that I'm 99% sure is Mitch Wallis - had '#3' next to it....

So my question is - Is this old news? And can I assume Mitch has been given the famed number 3?

Thanks Magic Griffen - much appreciated. So far he has a few little bulldogs tee's, a couple of bulldog teddies, a scarf, a bulldogs money box signed by a dozen or so of the players, a Team of the Century jumper framed on his wall (signed by Sir Doug, and a print of EJ's signature) - and of course he was signed up by his Grandfather as a 2011 member the day after he was born.

So he is very well equipped to be a Bulldog for life! His Geelong supporting mother has not quite embraced - but has accepted this fact!!
