what a waste of a pick getting Ablett first up.

It must have been in Gary's contract as they could have waited and used their last pick on him.

I do not think anyone else would have picked him up.

Rookie Draft Pick 22 ~ Luke Dahlhaus

Player assessment

Very strong and quick small forward who picks up possessions almost at will. Averaged over a goal a game in two seasons with the Geelong Falcons.

From inside footy:
Luke's dad won 2 Mathieson Medals (Geelong footy league B & F's) He recorded the best mobility test in Australia at 7.74 and he's got great speed to match. "He's one of those small forwards/onabller types who would fit the bill of a club looking for a quick forward."

We're certainly going small

We are certainly making a habit of drafting (trading for) vertically challenged players.

Make that 11.35.

Very interesting, and everyone we've traded for & drafted/rookied thus far seems to have legspeed.

Edit: Except for Ed Barlow

Rookie Draft Pick 55 ~ Ed Barlow
Western Bulldogs
Player statisticsFormer club:Sydney SwansDOB:27/01/1987Height:196cmWeight:99kgPosition:MidfielderPlayer assessmentThe tall utility played just one senior game in 2010 and ended his year early with a hamstring injury. Showed promise in 2009 with 14 games before his form dropped off towards the end of the season.

Might as well just say Mitch Hahn with last pick.

Surprised they didn't pick up a tall defender unless they think Barlow can do the job.

I think thats the role that Barlow is tabbed for

And really I think he offers us more than Markovic and Mulligan - which is an indictment on some previous list management decisions

What happened with our deal with Willy to take a Williamstown funded rookie.

On our list we now have:

Hooper - 172cm
Djerrkura - 176cm
Tutt - 177cm
Schofield - 179cm

Johannissen - 176cm
Dahlhaus - 178cm

I think that's way too many guys under 180cm.

Maybe we're trying to create a midfield full of Gablett Jnr. clones.

Except Gablett Jnr is 182cm (same height as Brad Johnson) he would tower over these guys.

Good question!!

Just speculating, do you think patty Rose would have played out his days at Willy had he not been rookied last year???

Tutt listed as a defender means if he's back, we probably can't afford another in that group to be part of the defensive 6.

Perhaps 2 small forwards, although we'd be hoping Veszpremi takes one spot so there's only one available there too from the above group.

Obviously not every kid will come on; hopefully at least one of the super-quick guys makes it as an outside mid as we really do need pace there.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Simon Dalrymple, recruiting manager
"We had two young defenders rated in our top five but they were ruled out due to medical reasons. We've got two boys with elite speed - [Luke] Dahlhaus and [Jason] Johannissen - and we've really satisfied the need to get some quick players into our midfield for the long-term.

[Ed] Barlow can play as a hit-up forward, run-with player or as a medium back, and [Mitch] Hahn thinks he can play a lot of senior games and hopefully in a premiership. Our key criteria in choosing rookies were having the attitude to get better and train the house down."

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=105980

Interesting that both young defenders failed the medical tests. You'd think if it wasn't something recurring or degenerative a club would still take a chance on that player and give them two years.

So they don't see Ed Barlow as a key defender, didn't think so. They are really placing a lot of confidence in Mulligan and Markovic.

Does anyone know who were the top 5 players we wanted?

Curious to know whether one of the defenders was Frost.

I have mentioned this a few times but I really question our list management approach.
We will use the lack of emerging tall defenders as an excuse sometime next season.

I find it really strange why we keep drafting so many small midfielder types. I see more of a deficiency in our backline in the coming years as guys like Hargrave, Morris and Lake age.

What sort of reasoning is that for picking a player? I think I can play senior games and play in a premiership - can I be on an AFL list?
