But what Doggies players is everyone looking towards?
Im deciding on Cooney, Boyd or Griffin as the elite midfielder. Out of the kids; Wallis, Howard in hope they get some games.

I'm no expert as I've never played in these comps but I'm thinking the less bulldog players the better, especially if you are paying top dollar as you could be looking at them with rose coloured glasses on.

Going to be a very interesting year in SC. I need to read the new rules etc, but it seems as though not loading up on players from any one team might be a good strategy.
@ Hotdogs - DT just uses more simple measures, kick handball etc. SC is based on the champion data ratings and includes a much larger and broader range of statistics.

Brian Lake was an absolute standout last year, scoring 150+ a couple times, same with Cooney, Boyd very consistent. No problems with having a couple dogs, just don't overload.
I had Harbrow, Lake, Cooney, Bazza and Roughie last year..all did well enough but as you said, don't pay top dollar. Higgins and Ward are looking like good buys this year IMO.

Hey SS, beware of Drummond...he has burnt me 2 years in a row with his injuries...will be staying well away this year.
Rumor of Harbrow moving into the mifield could be good, but he does give the ball up a bit.
Hurn is an absolute legend in SC...a friend had him last year and plenty of times his DT score was say 65, but his supercoach score was 102. He uses the ball well and kicks it a long way too.

You're a long way off the sort of side I am looking to field. The idea is to try and end up with the highest scoring 22 players on the field before the end of the year, to do so you need to start with the most certain 14 of them, and progressively upgrade the other 8 as your bench players appreciate through the year and you see who else is firing.
You've only got 5 players over $500k, it seems like you are looking to make money from most of your side, but really this should mainly come from a more limited list of players on your bench. You've also got too much money on the bench and not on the field.
Check this out for more info

Thanks mate. That was my mentality, in that trying to buy mid tier players who will hopefully do well for a bit then I can trade them off for someone better.
That is usually the trap i fall into. I get caught up too much in who is likely to improve and make me money and fail to secure the really good players, which means my average score is too often below 1,500. It really should be up around the 2,100 mark.

Thanks mate. That was my mentality, in that trying to buy mid tier players who will hopefully do well for a bit then I can trade them off for someone better.
Mid tier players that will appreciate are a lot harder to pick than rookies, as you have to guess who will improve and not just who will get games. As the rookies are only priced at around a 20 points per game average, with the average per player in each game up at 75, as long as they are playing they will go up. Mid tier players will also appreciate in value a lot less, making you less money.
The other problem is only starting with 5 players that you intend to have in your final side means you have 17 upgrades to do - generally an upgrade requires two trades, making money in one trade by downgrading a player to a cheaper one then using that money to upgrade another - which means you will need up to 34 trades on upgrades alone - 10 over the limit, and even before injury trades, or leaving room to correct poor selections early on.
The biggest mistake footy fans turning to SC for the first time make is basing all their selections around who they think will improve the most from last year - but really, only 3-4 players in your side should be anything other than the highest scorers and rookies most likely to get games.

Some of the bargains I believe are:
David Hale - Should play a lot as the Hawks ruckman and is also decent as a forward. New IC rules might suit him
Chris Knights - Back from injury so if he is fit he is a cheapy.
Daniel Harris - GC have invested a lot in him and he should get his chances.
Jeremy Laidler - Carlton were keen to get him and if he does OK in the pre-season they could find a spot for him.
Andy Otten - Very much like Knights.
Andrew Krakouer - Like Harris
Drew Petrie - Handy as a cheap forward.

Not bad comrade. Consider a few more GC rookies, as a side they are vastly undervalued compared to what they will score. X Clarke has done a knee you will need to swap him out, perhaps for Daniel Harris. Also look at Drew Petrie, your ruck looks a bit weak and has no MPP for backup. If you need to turn G Ablett into Boyd to afford it, I would do that - Ablett will struggle this year IMO without the support, and you don't really want premiums from bottom 4 sides.
The round 6 bye will test you, with 10 players out, including 2 from the ruck and 3 forward starters, and round 19 will knock out 3 of your defensive premiums - maybe swap Newman out for a top 4 side premium, and Menzel out for someone with a later first bye that you can upgrade before they miss a game.

Nice list. Did you mean Nathan Krakouer though? Andrew went to the Pies & could be a good option
I'll add a few -
Jed Adcock - Injury Discount
Josh Fraser - New Club
Rhys Stanley - Steven King retirement
Nathan Ablett - New Club
Patrick Veszpremi - New Club
Shaun Higgins - Recovered from injury
You should be able to find all the midpricers you need out of those. Notice none of them are listed because they are 'sure to improve' or have a 'breakout year' - their circumstances have changed, which makes it more likely that they will score higher.

I got rid of Newman and put Sam Gilbert in - maybe a risk, but he is a MPP. I also swapped out Ben Jacobs for Michael Coad who I think will get plenty of game time this year.
Petrie and Harris are now in, also.

Really want to find a way to get Broughton in there, but just can't get the cash together. Also, bit worried about the forward line; any suggestions?

Thanks for the advice.
I got rid of Newman and put Sam Gilbert in - maybe a risk, but he is a MPP. I also swapped out Ben Jacobs for Michael Coad who I think will get plenty of game time this year.
Petrie and Harris are now in, also.
Good to hear. I have Gilbert too, but all the Saints business has me waivering.

Try moving one of Goddard, Gibbs and Deledio to the middle to help with MPP, and replace Liam Anthony ('breakout year' selection) at M4 to bolster your midfield. Downgrade Drummond (too injury prone) to Adcock and see if you can turn Anthony into Broughton. Swap Prestia with Tapscott if you still can't afford it.
If you're not happy with your forward line, try moving Smith from the mid bench up forward to be replaced by Wallis, dropping Knights and upgrading Higgins to Didak. We all know Higgins' injury history, hopefully he is fine now but you've probably got too many midpricers anyway. Callinan sounds like the Barlow of 2011, so you should be able to get away with starting him.

I'd get rid of Drummond and look at Birchall to free up some money. I think you need to downgrade one of your $500,00 plus guys so that you can add a bit of depth elsewhere. For example Hale at $40,000 more than Prestia looks like good value to me if he is fit. What about Cooney instead of Anthony?

Going to look very closely at pre-season stuff out of the Lions; really rate Drummond, think he could be one of the highest scoring defenders if he stays fit; but he probably won't, so a downgrade to a Birchall or Adcock is likely.
Already gotten rid of Prestia for Atley in the midfield and moved Mzungu into the forward line.

Some good advice in here! Cheers all. I finished up 220ish overall last year and am looking getting right up there again!
The strategey i'm looking for this year is to pick my team filled with either rookies or guns. So not picking many (if any) players in the price range of say 200-400k. With the extra trades this year and amount of young kids who will be getting games (especially GC) i believe you will be able to upgarde all your rookies starting on the field to guns at some stage.
I find these middle range players who you may expect to have a break out year are the ones that really hurt your team.
Obviously this tatic will come crashing down if you don't pick the right rookies... But i believe if you put in the research and watch the NAB cup close enough you should get a fair idea of who to pick.
Another thing to take note is with the byes. There are 5 rounds which 3 teams have the bye. When these rounds occur is it also a bye for the League games. There are 4 teams which their 2 byes fall into these 5 rounds. This could be advantageous if you’re going for the league win and an important thing to be cautious of if you’re going for an overall ranking.
So Brisbane, Fremantle, Melbourne and Sydney have both of their byes in these multi-bye weeks, so players from those teams will never miss a game because of a bye - at least from a private league perspective. So load up on these players :D

Pretty solid team there!
Here's a few things i would look at changing.
Kruezer in the ruck is a bit risky for mine. Not only is he coming back from a knee reco but he will be spending majority of his time at Full Forward by reports. This will defiantely hamper his scoring.
Luenberger from Brisbane would be a better pick IMO. Will have alot of game time in the ruck when Fev gets the sack and Clark plays FF. Vossy prefers him as the #1 ruck anyway. He played 22 games last year and looks to be improving rapidly!
I'd also looking at Trading Hill for David Swallow. Hill is going to be a superstar no doubts about it. But until he learns how to cope with a tag i can't see him being a good pick. I can see him being really inconsistent again this year. Swallow will end up averaging more than him IMO.
This would give you an extra aprox 350k which could be used upgrading Astbury from Richmond to anyone you like!

Changed my team a little. Hows it looking now?
Still a bit of work to do for mine.
So many very speculative players like Brad Harvey in the back line because his chances of playing are slim.
I think Cam Richardson is a must have player and would have him the forward line and move Krakouer into the midfield. I still think you have one too many high priced midfielders because this is where there is the most other cheaper options
If you have to punt on ruckman because you have no money left over then Zac Smith is a must and maybe Jamie Charman.
There must be better midfield options than JBolten
Just some thoughts
LostDoggy

The speculative players will be changed based on NAB cup happenings. So I don't really know any of the first games, so will make changes based on what happens in the NAB cup.

loz,
I would think that you have too many mid-range players (300K-450K) in your team who either aren't likely to either score big scores consistently or increase in value.
A tip from a post earlier is to try and pick about 12 to 14 players you would like to keep all year and then fill the rest with rookies who will play early so their value increases or under-valued players (Otten, Ward, etc..). The secondary types can be traded out for premiums as this price increases.
I hope this helps.

Comrade, I think way too many of your bench players won't play quickly or frequently enough. I understand there will still be changes based on NAB cup form but I can't see any of your bench players playing more than half the games. Also, in round 1 Gold Coast have the bye which means your defence needs two of Poupolo, Howard and Talia to make their debut straight off (not sure if Talia has debuted already).

I'll be rejigging the bench after the NAB Cup but I'd prefer to have a strong 22 with heaps of premiums (5 back/forward and 4 midfield) and bunch of rookies.
Yeah, bench players are for upgrading but so are your fringe players in the actual 22. 15 of my 22 are keepers at this point, the other 7 I hope I can upgrade at some point and my bench - well, if half of them play some game time it will give me some cash to play with.

Fantasy Footy games were so much better 10 years ago.
I have been in a comp for 16 years well before Supercoach. Not too sure of Fantasy footys rules, may be similar to our comp in some ways.
We have a draft with picks 1 to 16 drawn out of a hat.
No 2 teams can pick up the same player
22 players on our list
forwards awarded points for goals kicked (thats obvious)
rucks scores are based on total marks and hitouts
midfielders awarded for amount of possies they get
tackles are now awarded 4 points (used to be 6 points) When a player got 10 tackles, they inevitably would win, hence why we reduced their impact by awarding 4 points
you can retain 4 rookies on your list (Rookies defined as players who have not played 40 games)
I have Jordie McKenzie, Jordan Roughead, Jarryd Grant & Liam Jones who I will be retaining
On game day your side comprises of
3 midfielders
3 forwards
1 ruck
1 tackler
with 4 interchange players for each position.
we have a midseason draft with the team on the bottom getting 1st pick and so on.
We play each team twice and have a finals system
At the end of the year, a mate has us over for a lamb on the spit night with drinks with the Grand Final winner awarded a trophy, gets to keep the shield for a year (yes like the Ashes) and the left over money is awarded to the winner.

Mzungu is a no brainer (bit worried about his ball use) and it was nice to be able to use him as a forward so I could remove some mid-tier players ($250K - $350K) from the midfield and slot in rookies who should get big game time (Krakouer and Gaff especially).
Easily the most strategy I've used than in prior years, where I would just pick players who I though would improve and ended up with a bunch of mid-tier players across every line.
Hopefully I'll still have some interest by round 8 :D

I figured 2 players was alright, but any more would be stupid.
You do have to be careful though because say you have two or three of your best players all from the same side (say Judd and Gibbs) you could easily lose 200 points in the week they have the bye.

Hopefully I'll still have some interest by round 8 :D
I would think so, looks a good side. You're putting a bit of faith in Charman and Bailey though, when Freo & North have the bye. You need a playing R3 or MPP backup IMO. Also look around for other rookie defenders than Coad, he only made the 'possibles' side in the GC intra club, even with half a dozen starters out, and GC have said the 'probables' have half a foot on the plane for their first premiership match.
I have 14 of your starting 22
The games this year are going to come down to the performance of just a few players in each team.
I only have 9 of his 22 and 13 of his total 33. Only 8 differences isn't that remarkable though between good sides. I think my WOOF league GF versus Doc26 last year was decided by 5 or 6.
I was a bit wary of putting 2 players from the same side in the same section ie: 2 pies in the forwardline etc. Just because of the byes.
Good call.
This expands on it further:
http://onthefool.com/headlines.html
That article is heavily based on a league focus. Recommending Freo players because their byes are in multi-bye weeks when there are no SC league matches is disastrous for anyone focused on their overall ranking

Who do you perpetually have in your team each year that lets you down, either through form or injury?
For me I have been sucked in the past few seasons by Ricky Pettard, does well when fit, but keeps getting injured. Lachie Hanson also seems to get me, dunno why.
I have never selected either of these 2 at the start, but have invariably traded them in at some stage.

Not an injury but last year I had Staker and he was woeful, averaging 40-50 in about 6 games..got fed up with him, as soon as I did he was on fire and ended up averaging 87 for the year

I didn't have Dean Cox in 09, then started with him last year and traded him out (for Seaby before he was injured :o) when he was scoring 50's before he proceeded to come good and be the #2 ruck for the season

The games this year are going to come down to the performance of just a few players in each team.
The games over the season, as it does every season, will be determined by the timing of everyone's trades. The good premiums will all look the same eventually, but hoping that your speculative picks don't get injured and maximising your cash at the right time so that your team in the last ten weeks will become stunningly good (ie. having more premiums and consistent mid-tier performers and fewer duds than your opponents) will be key. Most people who play SC can't help getting sucked in by short-term form, so those who can pick the right guys at the start and hold their nerve (and conserve trades) the best tend to prosper in the long-term.
Having said that, I only lost all three GFs I played in last year so what do I know.

Not sure Mzungu and Callinan are that big a blow to peoples teams in the grand scheme of things. They are both such cheap and obvious buys that 99% of teams will have them, and therefore by buying them you don't have a chance of actually benefitting from them, but rather it just ensures you don't fall behind (does that make sense?). Dyson Heppel and David Swallow are two other obvious examples.

If you have them in your team purely to score points then you won't get any benefit from them.
However, not having them in the team means you have to now find another 'cash cow' who is going to have a significant increase in price and allow you to eventually bring in another premium.
Mzungu and Callinan were both in a lot of teams, but a lot of strategies will have to change now that they're out. Their value is not in points, but in the amount of money that they would make you (by increasing on their starting price).

is there people complaining that they dont have a spot? the last i saw people were entering a second league to make up numbers. If he hasnt finished his team by lockout he will be booted automatically and replaced with some random, it's not going to affect the league in any way.
There is every chance he is waiting for teams to be announced before finalising his team
Fair enough. I shall just leave the system taking care of everything then. Normally, you would have completed your team and only doing some light adjustment just before the first game lock out. I just want to compete against someone in WOOF instead against someone picked randomly by the system.

SuperCoach last-minute checklist
Remember, its a partial lock out so your Carlton & Richmond players have to be in today before the game starts.

It's harder with the bye, you have to make sure you don't have too many players from one team in each section, or you won't have enough players to field a team once they have a bye. Guess that's pretty obvious, but didn't have to take that into consideration last year.

Anyone know of a way that you can stay logged in? It's only a small thing, but having to re-enter details each time sh*ts me.
