View Full Version : Bulldogs to wear the '54 jumper full time campaign

I posted this on the jumper thread but wanted to discuss the notion of the club wearing it full time in it's own right.
I've set up a facebook community/group/whatever it is to support the cause. Unlike most Bulldog related fb groups I don't want it to be a place to criticise the club, rather a place to show support for the jumper.
The link is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bulldogs-to-wear-the-54-jumper-full-time/219019741453928?ref=hnav
Alternatively, search 'Bulldogs to wear the '54 jumper full time' and click like.
I have also emailed Simon Garlick at simon.garlick@westernbulldogs.com.au.

I do like the one off 2004 jumper with wider stripes. Only a small difference, but Teddies jumper with red collars and red around the sleeve is very nice.

Rocco, great job.
I think the jumper we wore last night is perfect (minus the names obviously), and have emailed Garlick . It is the perfect combination of tradition and simplicity. Very strong.
However, the one EJ is wearing above with the red sleeves is a bit too retro IMO.
Could you clarify what you mean by '54 jumper?

Could you clarify what you mean by '54 jumper?
Good question frank.
I am with you, last night's design is my favourite but it's not about particularly having that one. It's more the general 54 design that I want back. I don't want to alienate fans by saying accept one particular design. That discussion can come after the club hopefully designs to go back to the general 54 design.

Given there will be a review at the end of the year, I think this group more than any other has a chance of influencing club decision.
I've jopined and will hope that many others do in the coming weeks.
I'd like to think any long term change will cause a few fans to rush out and buy jumpers too - a bit of extra cash for the club.

Have sent the Facebook group to as many of my Dogs supporting friends as possible
Would be worthwhile everyone emailing the clubs Marketing Manager, and if there is a Merchandising Manager i'm sure they would also be interested in a grass-roots campaign like this. As would the board...
A jumper change would provide the club with significant $$$s through increase merchandise sales especially in the first and second year of the new (old) design.
Given our lack of on-field success this year, I would expect next year memberships and corporate sponsorship to flatline, so the revised jumper could provide a well needed cash injection.
I follow _the_kennel on Twitter, might be worthwhile trying to get the group tweeted by the owner of that Twitter account

Just a suggestion , if a " Bring Back the 54 Jumper " night is organized it would be an idea to combine it with a Bulldoze the Debt night , if your able to book a venue just make it a $30 entry - $20 for BTD / $10 to cover venue hire and you just pay as you go for food and drink , see if Simon Garlick or other board members and some players can come, should be a good night with some benefit for the Club as well

Hey guys,
Waiting to hear back from the club about organising a hard copy petition. Once again our group is very much pro the club, just that in varying extremities we prefer the general '54 design to the robodog.
It's about gauging the support our fans have for the '54 design. If you haven't joined our facebook group and/or signed our online petition, please click the links in our signature.

The only alternative jumper that is being proposed is our heritage/54 jumper
To avoid muddying the waters, if an official survey was to be completed by the club, the question would need to be worded as follows
"Are you in favour of the Bulldogs changing their home jumper for the 2012 season from the current design to the below proposed design" <insert picture of the heritage/54 jumper>
We just want a clean cut answer - do you want to change the current jumper to the 54/heritage jumper or not? Easy question - Yes or No....
I havent seen any other jumper apart from the 54 jumper gain momemtum or be proposed - we dont want this to turn into the referendum for the republic

While I prefer the 54 design I won't be signing on.
The most important question about the jumper is "does it bring in kids?"
This has nothing to do with whether those of us who are already committed for life would rather watch.
In a scientific sample of precisely one, I asked the father of the only other Bulldogs supporter at Auskick why his son barracked for the Bulldogs (the rest of the household are Richmond or Geelong).
"He liked the jumper. He wanted one, so we bought him one. Now he is as fanatical about them as any kid about his team."
I'll go with whatever jumper the club believes will bring in the most kids.

Here's an idea for you take a picture of both jumpers to the game tonight and ask some kids at the ground what jumper they prefer.
My oldest likes the 54 jumper (he is 12) but l would think many kids would like ROBODOG.
Let us know how you go.
The kids get the FINAL say its not up to us older supporters.
Rocket Science
01-07-2011, 06:58 PM
On one hand I suppose it's strategically savvy to sport a guernsey with seemingly obvious appeal to kids, but by that logic it's derelict of all clubs without a cartoon character on their crest to dismiss courting the younger generations.
I concede we're more beholden than most to the pursuit of ever more members. That said, call me old school but I'd prefer to think organisational professionalism, sustained success, intelligent marketing and a continuation of our various grass roots/schools/community based programs are the pillars upon which we grow our supporter base, not a cheesy, disposable logo. The jumper surely isn't our sole means of promoting ourselves to newer generations, and for mine is too important to be prostituted in this way. That's partly what alternate strips are for, surely.
Maybe I'm unusually hard-line but since its inception I've never been able to cop the ignominy of our blokes having to wear that silly thing out onto the field, and I've actively shunned owning any merchandise featuring it. I personally find it ugly, demeaning and a bit insipid. And whether you're philosophically in favour of an animal as the centrepiece on a footy jumper or not, for mine ours is poorly designed (and agreed with the above; seems stylistically dated) and frankly looks like he's having a hard time squeezing something out.
Who knows, perhaps that's why the kiddies love it.
Huzzah to the chap (or lass) for getting this jumper initiative off the ground.

Asked a few people l sit near at the game tonight what jumper they preferred.
l was wearing the 54 jumper so people could easily see and compare the two jumpers.
l found kids and people in their early to mid twenties preferred ROBODOG while the older supporters preferred the classic jumper.

While I prefer the 54 design I won't be signing on.
The most important question about the jumper is "does it bring in kids?"
This has nothing to do with whether those of us who are already committed for life would rather watch.
It is not as simple as that.
I know a lot of adult fans who are over how plastic our club is and no longer members. The combination of being called Western, our logo, our jumper and playing at Etihad gives us a distinct Melbourne Franchise number 10 feel. Not having a go at the club for all the decisions, I understand that we have to do must of those, I guess I feel the jumper is the easiest way to re-connect ourselves.
I am a primary school teacher and I can tell you what is by far and away the number 1 reason kids chose a team (outside of positive parent experiences etc) and that's winning. Number 2 are regular clinics, free stuff from club etc.
Also, what's the point of attracting 3 kids if we lose 4 adults? Of course it's not as simple as what keeps adults but it's also not as simple as what gets kids in. Retaining and convincing adult members to stay on is enormous. Getting a membership is mainly a heart over head decision and I feel selecting the jumper most members like, whatever it is, is a big 'heart' type decision.
Just because a kid likes the robodog at 8 does that make them want to be a member when they are an adult? What about the phase in a kids life were they find the robodog absolutely lame and cringeworthy? Do you think cynical teens like the robodog? Also, if what kids like is so important why isn't robodog on a space shuttle to the moon? Do we really believe it is as simple as what an 8 year old kid wants? That kid grows up guys.

Theres been some reports on BF, but as they are from BF, got to take it with a grain of salt.
Basically, it was stated that some people have had a talk to Garlic and club functions and Garlic stated that they were planning on possibly changing jerseys before the season anyway, but all the talk has really accelerated the issue and confirmed their thoughts.
Interesting times ahead

Changing from robo dog to classic won't have any impact on our membership base, being a successful club on & off the field is what will drive future supporters.
FWIW, i think the club will go back to the classic jumper from next season onwards.

The novelty needs to be purged forever with the return of our relatively simple yet strong and proud classic strip.

I am also not too sure how much to belive the BF rumours.
I find it odd that so many simply right off the change as hurting our membership base. To me the discounting the current members reeks of a political part being complacent of a 'safe seat'. The issue here is we have to keep motivating these members to sign up every year and our poor retention rates tell me that we aren't doing that.
Crazy, crazy thinking but perhaps making the members you already have happy is a good idea.
Anyways guys, please keep on joing the group at our new user friendly address www.facebook.com/BulldogsTraditionalJumper.

So the Traditional jumper as the home jumper, and the white with robodog as the away/clash jumper
When we are on TV for away games the kiddies would see the white robodog....not such a bad move.

Hi Rocco,
Do you want the Robodog removed from the clash jumper as well?
No but I guess what I want is what our fanbase wants.
The primary reason I started the group wasn't just because I love it, it's because such a vast majority of our fans do. Personally I like/don't mind our white robodog clash strip. Personally I'd like to see the logo changed though so not sure where it sits with the white clash strip. Either way, the group isn't about eliminating the white robodog jumper, it's about getting the traditional design as our main jumper.
Rocco Jones
12-07-2011, 12:52 PM
Just to add to that, I see the main jumper as being a timeless design that really represents the club. Something people see and link it directly back to the club and all that.
I see the away strip as being more open to what's 'in' now (which is old school anyway really!). I honestly don't really care how often we change our away strip as long as it's decent. Some fans don't like the white background but I appreciate the club is actually trying to have a real clash strip.

I see the clash/away jumper as an opportunity for us to change the design frequently ala soccer and drive revenue.

No No No. This is just taking this thread in the complete wrong direction.
The point is this.
We don't want anything funky or new or reinvented.
We want a simple solid traditional guernsey because they never go out of style.
Like Collingwood.

Bob Murphy endorses your campaign in his latest column....
"Perhaps our alien friends would wonder how a team with undoubted talent could muster only seven wins from its season so far? Who knows, they may even wonder why we don't wear our much more flattering heritage jumper instead of the one we currently wear? They may not even like footy. They probably just tune those telescopes in to watch Josh and Jenna on The Block."

I don't know if this adds weight to the theory, as it may happen every year, but this years jumpers have been marked down to half price on the Bulldogs shop, which may indicate that next year they won't be worth nearly as much when they are outdated merchandise.

Just got a SMS through about it from the dogs with a video announcement from Smorgan. It's nice to have a change, but I am not really fussed or doing backflips about it like some.
Just a thought though:
I think the people that really wanted to see this jumper get in were the people that are lifelong supporters anyway.
I think some people who are indifferent about it (like me) but are lifelong supporters haven't fussed and will continue not to fuss.
I think the jumper will not be as attractive to kids, an important market to break ground in, so hopefully that doesn't have an adverse affect on future memberships (because sometimes things like that will sway a kid).

THE Western Bulldogs have ditched their guernsey of the past 15 years, reverting to a two-striped design.
A year after Fremantle dropped the anchor, the stylised puppy has been cut loose at Whitten Oval.
From next season, the club's home guernsey will be royal blue with a single red and white stripe.
The throwback to the 1954 and 1961 Grand Finals guernseys was a hit with fans when worn for special occasions in recent years.
In a website poll, an overwhelming 80 per cent of supporters supported the back-to-basics change.

Yes I agree, The jumper on its own is not bad but with the shorts as well there is too much white.

We dont clash with ANYONE and our jumper looks awesome...I know, I know, if we don't wear them we don't sell them, if we don't sell them we don't make money but still.
Surely a strip that was predominantly red with a blue and a white stripe would make a more aggressive, stronger looking jumper.

Both look great. Only thing I'd change is the mini-Robodog on the shoulder of the white. Move it to the middle, or take it off altogether. Otherwise, they both look great. Can't agree on the white looking weak - and if our players need a particular colour to look strong, they're in trouble. If they played strong, wouldn't matter what they wore. That said, someone (apologies, can't remember which WOOFer it was) mentioned wearing pink for one of the rounds. Please God, don't let that happen. ;)

The 2012 Jumper hasn't been worn since the end of 1974, which means people born in 1975 have never seen the 2012 jumper worn on a regular basis. Funny that you felt two things - the subject needed a rest and you needed to make a case for the white jumper...from my perspective (and I know it isn't going to change) we just DONT NEED A CLASH JUMPER and we sure don't need one that is white. Our colors are great and apart from West Coast who seem to change jumpers every season in any case we really don't clash with anyone...yet we wear white against Richmond for goodness sake...where is the clash???

My kids have the wear your team colors day at school and Kindy.
I noticed a drop off in numbers of Bulldog guernsey's this season .
Reason is simple kids and adults respond to how the team is "Travelling",
Up and about plenty of Bulldog guernsey's .
It's got nothing to do with what's on the guernsey.
I actually like the clash strip concept, and with 30 players around the ball it's easier to recognize who has got it. This nonsense of wearing a color paramounts to insipidness is complete rubbish. Goodness me if it's good enough for every major sport to wear a clash strip then surely it's good enough for our major domestic sport.
Someone forgot to tell me that the feared Leeds Utd team of the 70's was insipid because they wore white. The England front row? NFL ?

Our colors are great and apart from West Coast who seem to change jumpers every season in any case we really don't clash with anyone...yet we wear white against Richmond for goodness sake...where is the clash???
I agree with part of what Sockeye said in that we need a clash jumper for West Coast and Melbourne and maybe Freo even though their new jumper probably isn't a clash. Clashing with Richmond is just the AFL's effort to let us know who's really pulling the strings.
As for white, well it still looks very weak to me. We can come up with a far better design than that but we just don't want to push back at the AFL that hard.

Not wanting to harp, but I can't get my head around this idea that white reflects something that is weak, or insipid? Is it just a vibe you get or does it relate to an experience in particular, for instance the umpires wearing white, or white boots being too flashy and all those types of idiosyncrasies.
I really like the white clash strip, but I don't want to defend it or anything, simply just to get an idea where the association with weakness etc comes from?

I'd be surprised if an AFL team changed their perceptions of their opposition based on the colours they wear these days. I think good system, good skills and an uncompromising attitude is what does it for the successful sides. Maybe I'm wrong.
I like the look of the clash strip, and I like the concept of having an away jumper that brings a clear contrast when watching the game live and on TV. We're lucky we have one that is very similar in design to our home strip.

Am I mistaken or do you rarely see anyone over about 35 wear a Bulldogs club jumper to a game? I think it might be more common with older Pies supporters but I don't notice many of our 35+ supporters wearing the jumper.
I bought one right before I left Melbourne in March 2000. Never wore it to a match. It seems to have shrunk in 11 years.:p
However, my 21 year old scarf is doing quite nicely.

When the white flag is raised it's a sign of weakness and surrender. We had the best jumper in the AFL for a number of years and we have only now just got it back but for whatever reason we will surrender it again even when there is no real clash at all. AS MJP pointed out, there is no clash with Richmond and I'd have to question why the club changes the jumper for it.
We will even surrender it when it's our home game. We need to stop being weak on the clash jumper issue and have a clear understanding of when it will be worn and then stick to it. I don't dispute we need to play our part and wear a clash jumper for the appropriate games but I still don't think the white design is something we should embrace.
Have different shorts or something but in my opinion the design that the club has put forward is another weak mainly marketing inspired effort.

I do have HD.
It's clearly better viewing when one team is a light colour and the other isn't. This applies to every sport, IMO anyway.

I think it might be a bit different if we were as financial & had as many members as Collingwood. Bit hard when you rely of the AFL for financial assistance. Bit like not biting the hand that feeds you.

Ta. I agree, I'd like some clearer indication of when and why we wear it. Either as an away jumper or a clash jumper against specified teams. We should wear our jumper as much as possible.

That's my point, they should just be upfront about it. A simple statement that we will wear the clash jumper when we are the away team against these a) b) c) clubs and it's really that simple.
I gather the reason why they don't do it is because the AFL can change their mind and of course we will bow to that request.

At the start of the season the AFL should release a document stating what all teams should wear when they play each other. It shouldn't be that hard! It would at least stop that ludicrous situation where West Coast come here with their royal blue jumpers.
Even when we play North, the away team should wear hooped socks.

I agree. Nominate the teams where there is a perceived clash (because there isn't that many for us, lets say 3 sides) and when we are the away team we know exactly what the side will be wearing for that game.
If there is a one off occurrence that needs to happen then give the supporters a weeks notice and the reasons why the change needs to occur.
I like the idea of a clash jumper and we have to be realistic about the needs of the competition but we have a great jumper and we should want to wear it us much as possible. Us wearing a clash jumper against the yellow and black of Richmond simply defies any logic.

I have no real issues with our white jumper as I don't see it as meek as other people seem to do. My issue is when we wear it in games where there is no clash and when we wear it at home, which I especially don't like.

Good points. Really, the ball is in the AFLs court in a big way here. They need to get real about the issue and make some clear decisions, instead of allowing club's like Essendon and Collingwood make cynical changes to their jumper simply to toe the line, but never really address the issue.
I'm glad we have a very clear and obvious clash jumper. I don't think we should have to wear it because some clubs refuse to make a significant change, as if their jumper is more important.

You play a home game you wear your home jumper , you play away against clubs with blue the major colour you wear clash jumper.

One game we like to wear it is in Darwin, even though we are the home team. With the poor lighting at the ground, white jumpers are an advantage.

I believe the white away jumper is great. It is extremely contrasting to ALL other AFL team's home colours and retains the traditional design in the home jumper in which we all petitioned/voted for. We (as with Fremantle and Port Adelaide) are extremely lucky to have that consistency in both the home and away jumpers, and for those who say it "looks weak" I believe they are missing the point:
Strength or weakness is defined by our actions and our attitude in which we conduct them with. If people's perceptions of what is strong/weak are overridden by the mere colour of a jumper then they seriously have issues.
If our away jumper clashes with a home team with a large portion of their jumper having the shade white, such as Sydney for example, then we wear our home jumper. Problem solved.

Maybe I'm biased from spending years wearing all-white uniforms in the Navy, but white does not signify weakness or surrender. You wave a white flag when surrendering because it's the most visible. Waving a red or black flag when surrendering at night is going to get you shot. Nothing really to do with the colour itself.
I think it has the opposite effect. An opposition player gathers the ball, looks up and sees a wall of white in front of him.

A goup of players all around you, hot footy, you get your hands on the ball you want to see your target lit up like a Christmas tree. They won't let us wear flashing lights so the next best thing is white.

This.
I know they are different sports with different norms, but I think there's some research out there in soccer that shows that teams wearing red are the most successful, but that could just be getting cause and effect mixed up -- the most successful clubs in history ie. Manchester United, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich etc. all wear red, but they are just big, big clubs for historical and cultural reasons, and would probably be successful if they were wearing multi-coloured vomit.
Germany is the second most successful international soccer team in history and they wear white. The most successful international team -- no prizes for guessing who this is -- wears canary yellow!

I think it's a little different with the soccer colours because they are usually very simple designs, they are usually mixed with a different coloured short, the shirts have sleeves, and they pull their socks up.
In AFL we like to clutter our guernseys with advertising and logos or stripes or emblems,
we all wear sleeveless, the shirts hang out over the shorts and the socks are pretty much non existent around ankles.
Which i think is why the predominately white colours don't look as good in our sport, as it kind of looks more sloppy than the darker colours and looks a bit like underwear.
Will Minson usually looks a lot better because he pulls his socks up, changing the effect. Perhaps it would look different if the rest did the same.

I think the brand has made some massive moves forward with the change of the jumper, the VFL team being named Footscray and even the ongoing marketing campaign embracing the western suburbs. We're still using the robo dog on merchandise (hats, tees, scarves etc) which is great as kids seem to love it.
It's all pretty cohesive and appeals to new and old members alike.

Basically less colours on the jumper likely makes more successful team. also strong colour combinations makes stronger team. too many colours will weaken the vibe for the team on field also serves as distracting factor.
Many clubs survive and prospered hundred years with strong colour combo, there is a whole astrological theory tracing back to ancient Chinese zodiaks behind it.
black and white: Juventus, Newcastle United and comes to local Collingwood (and look what happened to Port Adelaide since being forced to give up their traditional black and white by the Pies)
black and red: AC Milan and local Essendon
Canary Yellow is not a weak colour if used dominantly as its royal and represents durable gold metal in Chinese Zodiak. in that Brazil the most successful soccer team in the world, also Aussies competed really well in Olympics in dominate yellow with a bit green.
3-colour teams in the afl just happen to be the least successful in history: us, saints, freo, crows (orange and red have the same colour property so they've done better).
Dockers were never going to get a premiership in their old ridiculous red, green and purple jumper. but their fortune started to turn since wearing purple only.
We present stronger team vibe in our old jumper since removing the toyish robo dog from the chest, i believe our fortune will turn too. but to be successful and any chance of dominating in the next 100 years, i'd suggest removing the white (or reduce it to very minimal) to be a 2-colour red and blue team like FC Barcelona. ( and stuff the demons )

Love the current jumper - looks great.
And as other have said - glad the Bulldog/Robodog is kept on some of the merch. My young bloke is 2 years old - but he can identify the Bulldog logo, he sees it and knows thats our team. Which is good!

I think that will go pretty soon as well.
Didn't the club register the design for the new modern tiger style bulldog?
