Former Melbourne Demon Sean Wight dies after cancer battle

SEAN Wight, who starred for the Demons alongside fellow Irishman Jim Stynes, has died of lung cancer.

Wight, 47, died this morning at the Freemasons Hospital, his family has confirmed.

The Scots-born Irishman told the Herald Sun in May of the shock of discovering he had lung cancer, having enjoyed a ground-breaking AFL career built on extraordinary athleticism and skill.

"I remember thinking 'Wow, here I am, 46, I've never smoked, never really drunk, and I've got lung cancer," he told Mike Sheahan.

That is so sad. 47 is way to young to die. :(

Two Irish players who came out together and played together with cancer.

Sean was so young to die at 47, very sad.

My prayers are with his family at this sad time.

A friend of mine went to his fundraiser a couple of weeks ago and said he was in his wheelchair and there for only about half and hour.

He said it was sad to see him in such a bad way.

RIP Sean.

Let's hope we let Melbourne honour him properly tonight, even though it's our home game…

I just don't get it when people who have never smoked die from lung cancer. My grandfather went the same way. Tragic.
