WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade has declared out-of-contract midfielder star Callan Ward a future leader at Whitten Oval.
Ward, who grew up in the western suburbs, has been offered a five-year deal from Greater Western Sydney believed to be worth close to $5 million.
"We're going as hard as we can with Callan,'' Eade said.
"He's an extremely valuable player, but we see him as a future leader of the club and we're doing everything in our power (to keep him).”
Eade played down the revelation that Ward had met with GWS in recent weeks.
"That's the system we live in, people know that, so there's no anger as such,'' he said.
The Dogs are likely to make up to three changes for tomorrow night’s crucial clash with Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
Justin Sherman is out because of the club’s four-week ban for racial abuse while those in line for promotion include tall defender Lukas Markovic.
Full-back Brian Lake will spend another week in the VFL.
