I stopped reading an article when this was written off as ‘playing in the edge’. In what *!*!*!*!ing universe is pining a guy down, eye gauging him, grabbing his hair and then forcefully shoving his head into the ground ‘playing on the edge’?

This sort of reporting, usually following on from a narrative expressed by ex players in the media is really frustrating. It's absolute cowardice from the editors and producers to let it go out like that. Even Bob on the radio today really let himself down. He squibbed it. Grow some balls and be a leader, gave so,e custodianship over the game. Be better.
Not at all even with blatant footage of Bontempelli being eye gouged by the pig.
Not hard to see where Bont got his black and swollen right eye but this footage was shutdown.
The guy who got away with highway robbery was Himmelberg. Few are talking about the knee that he came in with and dropped hard into Marcus’s head whilst Greene was holding him to the ground, then quickly ran from the action. Marcus was largely oblivious to it but Himmelberg’s action was the worst of the lot and that’s saying something given what the pig was inflicting.
But hey, some just like to see this as finals footy and how it should be. Friggin neanderthals.

Oh ffs that's clear as day, hard not to be absolutely staggered with the current regime piloting the sport. It's the most heinous act, and somehow in the generalisation of misconduct it's been diluted to become something trivial. Thank god it's done, and I'm over it but there certainly needs to be a review at season's end.
This photo makes me LIVID!!!
It should have been plastered all over every media outlet and then the MRO should have rubbed the grub out properly.
Last time I checked, the Bont’s face is not a f**king BOWLING BALL.
The AFEL are just as revolting as pathetic excuse of a sports team.
My other half is ropeable -- talking about cancelling his membership and writing to Gill and PG to tell them why. "AFL not getting another cent of my money" etc. I think he means it, too.
What Greene did was dirty and cheap but there was no definitive vision of any eye gouging - he would have copped 6+ weeks if there was clear vision corroborating an eye gouge charge. Greene has rat cunning and knows the system well enough to push the envelope as far as possible without crossing over into suspension territory, which explains only 6 weeks suspension for 16 charges.
I blame the hot mess of a system and not the players who work with it. Far too much emphasis is placed on the medical report and not on the action itself. Greene's action warrants suspension because it is a shocking look for the game. But it is up to the AFEL to manage this properly, not the clubs or players.
Absolutely.
That they've effectively used the same stick to punish both Suckling's actions, and Greene's, highlights the rank inequity and ultimate absurdity of the system.
The problem is, if the culpability emphasis shifted to evaluating 'intent' at least as much as outcomes, how could you conceivably trust this lot to get it right?
Even the AFEL have enough self awareness to know to play within their limitations.
NRL have the right idea how to dish out penalties. They don't muck around. A player tonight got 8 weeks and he barely gouged the eye of his opponent.
Dishing out fines is a joke to players.
Meanwhile there was no definitive proof of a gouge by Young in the NRL and he copped 8 weeks.
Jack Riewoldt surprised Greene didn’t get 1 week.
Sam Burgess (Sydney Rabbitohs) got one week for hair pulling ... let alone slamming his head into the ground or pounding him repeatedly with a forearm and eye gouging. Maybe Burgess forgot to say I'm sorry
Love to endorse belting blokes behind play ...

... while tacitly endorsing the AFEL's inclination to agree.
Dangerfield pulled out all the stops and listed the Bontempelli breaking Haynes larynx, Greene being charged with serious misconduct on Bontempelli.
Operation get Hawk off is well underway.
What gives me the craps is the look of the game gets trotted out all year round and players records, yet somehow in sept the look of the game doesn’t seem to be a concern !
Hawkins can accept a one match ban
Dangerfield seems to be implying special rules for the best players. Presumably Will Hayes for example expendable in his reasoning.
"Obviously you want the best players out there" gets trotted out all time. GAGF to that. I want eligible players out there.
You want the best and fairest out there not the snipers.
Hope Dangerfield gets whacked by one, then watch him say the opposite.
Greene one week
Wot is happening.
He's being charged with unnecessary contact to the eyes? THIS week?
So you're allowed one crack at an opponent's face provided you pay the toll, but two is a bridge too far.
Just beautiful.
It sounds like the MRO have up on the tribunal so made it a different charge
I dare say this weeks charge for Toby Greene is a bit weaker than last week's with Bontempelli unless Neale is prepared to talk
If the AFL did their job last week without trying to do something that punished the player with a fine but really didn't address the issue there would have been nothing to talk about this week.
Greene is living proof that many youngsters just thumb their nose at rules and treat being given a chance as their god damn right.
He basically learned nothing from last weeks free hit.
In the words of that 70's show star Red Forman, Greene is a dumbass
Is there any chance the AFL are just screwing with us? We all think Greene's gone this time only to have him escape again probably on a technicality?
If Green appeals and loses, does he get two weeks off?
They should suspend him purely for being full of shit.

If not mistaken this is the 18th trip to the tribunal for the remorseful fellow, fourteen of which have yielded fines alone.
Take a bow AFEL, you created this wonderful mess.
