The AFEL need to seriously rethink this approach. It was meant for marquee players so clubs got something decent back in return. That is absolutely not who Battle is or Ben McKay for that matter. If they want to reframe it to a “help shit clubs” compensation then cool - maybe if you finished in the top 4 you don’t get comp, if you finished in the bottom 4 you can get band one, and everyone else just sucks it up with a band system that is based on transparency. Eg weighted 25% contract ($ and years) 25% last 3 years B&F results 25% career games played and 25% competition equality.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

It should never be first round compo. Put it at the end at most if at all.
Why should all the other clubs pay for the movement of a player from other clubs? It's the dumbest system but I suppose you can't expect anything else from this league.
The draft is so compromised these days it's beyond ridiculous.

So the Geelong pick is already at 17. Now there's at least 3 possibly 4 academy/father son bids. So it'll become 21 and possibly worse. So Geelong will basically be offering us a second round pick for Smith.

They dangled him to see if they could get that type of compensation
But - the academies and father sons are the issues in need of an overhaul - not the trading for Hanneberry, Jones, Howard etc

It's a great result for the saints because imagine what they would've gotten for him in a trade? Hawks have Barrass to deal for. Would have been way worse than pick 8.

Which is why clubs like Geelong don't play the draft. They let other clubs play the draft and they swoop on ready made players.

I thought Carlton was the GWS retirement scheme establishment by Silvagni as the original GWS list manager.

Re: Confirmed Trades - 2024
The compensation scheme really needs to be overhauled.
They now have points allocated for draft picks, so they should just allocate a points tally for the FA.
Base it on the playing career of the FA and require the club receiving the player to find the points rather than making every other team pay by dropping down the order.
Buddy would have been more than pick 1.

Re: Confirmed Trades - 2024
The fairest way for compensation should be all teams get a first round pick and all compensation, Father/sons, FAs start from pick 19.
