Re: WOOF welcomes Sam Davidson to the Whitten Oval

Do we see him as a winger? Or enough of a general forward that he won't be competing with the giants

    STRENGTHS:

    + Aerial ability
    + Running capacity
    + Scoreboard impact
    + Rate of development

    IMPROVEMENTS:

    - Size
    - Rawness

Richmond's Sam Davidson is the latest prospect to come off the production line that is Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal winners. The 190cm forward, who is studying medicine at Monash University, was plucked out of local footy in Gippsland to ply his trade in the VFL. His ascent this year has been astronomical.

Davidson showcased his elite running capacity, blending speed and endurance, along with great aerial range to kick 26 goals across 17 games in his debut state league campaign. His exploits included a bag of six majors against Northern Bullants, and four against Port Melbourne, while also spending time on the wing.

Having juggled his footballing development with study, he has come on quite quickly in an elite program and still has more potential to uncover. Improvement will come once he adds some size to his frame and continues his education in such a high-level system. Richmond found him first, but all clubs will be onto him come draft time.

Re: WOOF welcomes Sam Davidson to the Whitten Oval

The past 17 winners of the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal as the VFL’s most promising player aged 24 or under have gone on to play in the AFL, a roll-call of state league graduates that includes AFL premiership players Kane Lambert, Michael Hibberd and Bayley Fritsch. Davidson is out to extend the run.

Nickname “Doc’’ because he’s studying medicine, Davidson had a rousing debut season for the Tigers, parading his ability to play in a number of positions and averaging 14 disposals, three marks and three tackles from his 17 matches. He also kicked 26 goals, including six against the Northern Bullants and four against Port Melbourne.

Outgoing Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris on Davidson: “He has got a year to go with his placements and he can’t complete his studies while he’s full-time AFL but he said he’s more than happy to put that on hold to chase his AFL dream. I would be hopeful that he gets his chance, I don’t care where he gets it. He is a great kid who comes from a beautiful family and deserves the opportunity to test himself at the highest level, whether in the national draft or rookie draft.’’

I'd like him to be an Isaac Smith wingman please.

Re: WOOF welcomes Sam Davidson to the Whitten Oval

Exciting lead-up forward who has had an amazing journey to become a Draft contender after a breakout year for Richmond in the VFL which concluded with him winning the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal as the VFL’s most promising player. A medical student, he has spent recent seasons playing community football in the Gippsland and Sunraysia regions after playing junior football at Ormond. He was encouraged to test his talent at State League level and flourished this season, averaging 14 disposals and four marks and kicking 26 goals in 17 matches to share the Tigers’ best and fairest award. Kicked a season-high six goals against the Northern Bullants in Round 15. Showed a very impressive balance of high-level speed and endurance at the state Draft Combine in Melbourne, recording 2.98 seconds for the 20m sprint and 6:12 on the 2km time trial.

I’m tipping him to play Round 1.

And studying medicine. Another player with a good work ethic & of good character.

That goal he kicks lying on ground in goal mouth facing wrong way (a bit like a scorpion soccer type kick) shows some high footy IQ.

I know he has been a forward with tigers vfl. Could he be a winger with us? Seeing as he has running ability & is a good mark.
