World Cup 2010: Australian keeper Jones returns home
Australia do not expect Brad Jones to return to the World Cup finals after the Middlesbrough goalkeeper went home to deal with a serious family illness.
"We decided to let him go to his family and let him stay there as long as he likes," said caoch Pim Verbeek. "We expect him not to come back."

Re: FIFA World Cup 2010
With 2 days left, who will reach the last 4?
Interesting, if Brazil & Holland top their groups they will meet in the quarter finals.
My prediction went like this (winners bolded):
A1 - France
B2 - South Korea
B1 - Argentina
A2 - Mexico
C1 - England
D2 - Serbia
D1 - Germany
C2 - USA
E1 - Holland
F2 - Paraguay
F1 - Italy
E2 - Denmark
G1 - Brazil
H2 - Chile
H1 - Spain
G2 - Portugal
From there it went this way:
Argentina v Germany
Italy v Spain
South Korea v England
Brazil v Holland
So, my semi finalists consists of 2 European teams in England/Spain & 2 South American teams in Brazil & Argentina.
Top goal scorer of the tournament: Fernando Torres (Spain).Last edited by The Coon Dog; 10-06-2010, 11:09 AM.85, 92, 97, 98, 08, 09, 10... Break the curse!Comment

Interesting TCD that you've got no African teams getting out of the group stage. History would suggest one team will overachieve due to the location, although I couldn't tell you who.Park that car

Thanks Lantern, I guess I shouldn't post anything that requires a bit of thought at 3.45am in future.85, 92, 97, 98, 08, 09, 10... Break the curse!Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup 2010
Anyway, so you think Argentina will beat Germany? And that South Korea will beat France? Not that I'm disagreeing, but the Argentina/Germany match especially will be a very, very close one.
Also Spain's biggest threat is that quarterfinal match against Italy, who is the ONE country in the tournament with the defensive pragmatism and result-oriented nous to steal one from the Spanish. Germany, England, Portugal etc. will look to play the Spanish straight up and eventually be overrun by superior skill, but the Italians won't go toe-to-toe with them, just look to steal an early goal or one on the counter, and then shut up shop, or just take it to a penalty shoot-out, where the Italians and Germans are the masters (and have gun penalty-saving goalkeepers).
The only other team I can see doing a houdini over Spain is Argentina -- everyone remembers Maradona as an attacking genius from the 1986 tournament, but in 1990 his team was basically an old, slow, boring team that just fouled repeatedly and defended grimly and waited for penalty shoot-outs on its way to the final, where it lost by a single penalty and was the first team to not score in a WC final in the most boring tournament of all time. Diego, for all his insanity, is a pragmatist and opportunist first and foremost.Comment

Don't know about the Italians. Yes they won the entire thing on a shoot out last time. But their history before that, reads like England;
World Cup
1990 - lost a shoot out to Argentina in Semi-Final
1994 - lost a shoot out to Brazil in the Final
1998 - lost a shoot out to France in the QF
2002 - lost by golden goal in ET to South Korea Round 16
Euro
2002 - lost by golden goal in ET to France in the final
2008 - lost a shoot out to Spain in QFComment

I knew as soon as I wrote it someone would pick me up on it!
England are just horrible at it aren't they. At least the Italians make finals and win sometimes (in the last 50 years)Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup 2010
Getting pumped. Am in Croatia at the moment - waiting to head to Slovenia. Reminded me of our epic must draw match last WC. Poor keeping, poor ref, and harry kewell& besciano!
Will be on the bus back from Stanstead airport to London when the Aussies play. Thank goodness for catchup tv and the near live streaming on the iPhone!
Go you Aussies.
Interesting people are worried about our fire power up forward. I think the thing to remember is we'll be playing defence first, attack second. We don't have a lot of flair so our best chances will be draws and 1:0 wins. Cahill, Kewell, Besciano and Kenedy can all find the back of the net.
If our back 4 and Schwarzer play to their best we're a chance of progressing.Comment
