No, had the goal been correctly ruled the score would have then been 2-2.

Germany's 3rd & 4th goals were both scored on the break when England had comitted men forward in search of a equalizer, something they need not have done had they already been level.

Mantis, your comment is really not worth responding to, but I will amyway. This is arguably the biggest sporting tournament in the world & an enormous amount of money has been poured in to it. Surely it should be above these sorts of errors given the technology available. Even the simple use of an additional linesman behind either goal as is used in the Europa Cup would have alleviated this situation.

It wasn't a decision based on a referee's intetpretation about whether a foul had been committed & whether such a could deserved a card or the awarding of a spot kick. A ball clearly crossed the line!

Would you have been so blasé if that happened to Australia?

Agree that the ball isn't perfect, but the more highly skilled players and teams are still making it 'talk'.
Totally agree, in fact I was going to mention those goals where the intention was to curl the ball, "and boy did it curve?"
Some goals from outside the box, the player just put foot to ball and it swung both ways, what chance does the keeper have? I am not totally sure some of those goals were intentional, more the player just going "waack" and hoping the ball does the rest, which it has on several occasions.

Nothing better(Soccer wise) than seeing England lose.

          That's a bit harsh CD.

Yes, it was a monumental stuff-up, but FIFA and Sepp Blatter in particular have made a stand and are dead against technology being used. Yes, they probably should have another linesman in play which would alleviate such mistakes in the future, but they haven't so ifs and buts are irrelevant.

The standard of refereeing has been disgusting throughout the tournament. We (Australia) have copped the rough end of the stick (as we did in '06) so please excuse me if I don't really care if a team I don't really like get booted out in controversial circumstances.... I say suffer in their jocks.

England played like shit throughout their campaign, they couldn't even beat Algeria FFS and the rest of the tournament will be all the better that the Poms are headed home.

It is hard to comprehend how that goal can be missed. It isn't as though there was only an inch in it, it was a fair way over.

There have been many decisions throughout the tournament which have been really poor. It is a shame because the whole world is watching and it is the pinnacle event of Soccer. Some of the decisions come across as really amateurish. I thought the Kaka send off was disgraceful, but the non goal to England was worse because it was black and white, and no interpretation comes into it. It is just a bad blunder in a huge tournament. Not that I think it cost England the match or the cup, because they havn't looked great all tournament, but in such a big event, it is the responsibility of FIFA to get it right.

From a tournament fairness perspective, you like to see teams win and lose on their merits without bad referee decisions influencing the result though

You do, but this tournament has been littered with referee blunders which are impacting the results of matches and group standings. In saying that this stuff-up was probably the worst of them all.

I guess it begs the question of why they feel compelled to use referees from all countries, when they could pick a panel of a dozen or so who are recognised as being amongst the world's best & just use them.

Add to that all the momentum was with England at that stage.

I can't cop this (and I see it is in TCD's post as well). Germany scored twice early before England committed extra numbers forward in search of an equalizer....so it is not as if there was no precedent for Germany finding the net. If they had not conceded two early ones then the score would have been 1-0 England when the Lampard shot came.

The fact they rolled the dice a bit in an attempt to score was a good idea...the fact that they still could not score despite these tactics was the problem.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Who knows how the young Germans would have reacted though. They may well have gone into their shell after conceding 2 goals in 5 minutes.

Fact is no one knows what would have happened as a goal is a game changing event.

Great win. Now into the quarter finals which will be tough because it is against the Netherlands

The Netherlands would want to play a lot better than they did against Slovakia if they want to beat Brazil.
