One Day and T20 Squads to South Africa

Squads have been released for the two T20's and three One Dayers in South Africa between October 13 and 28. Few young faces, few surprises

ODI squad: Shane Watson, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin (wk),Steven Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Xavier Doherty, James Pattinson, Patrick Cummins, Doug Bollinger.

Twenty20 squad: Shane Watson, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Aaron Finch, David Hussey, Cameron White (capt), Matthew Wade (wk), Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Steve O'Keefe, Brett Lee, James Pattinson, Patrick Cummins, Doug Bollinger

In all honesty Id prefer to have theses guys at home in the Shield, will miss a minimum of one and most likely two four day games for a bit of meaningless stuff and thats if they make the XI.

Are the sponsors insisting that Lee be played? Why not pick another youngster?

Great to see Paddy Cummins in the ODI/20-20 squad, and likewise Wadey in the 20/20. Dave Hussey maybe a bit stiff to miss out in the ODI's.

Im not so sold, the most likely scenario is that he doesnt make the XI, particularly for the one dayers and he misses two valuable shield games to carry drinks. I dont think the experience is that valuable considering what he's missing. Its all about opportunity cost I guess but for a kid like Cummins we need to get as many games into him as possible.

Surely he'll get a game under the 'rotation' policy with bowlers. I think it's a great reward for the kid. Sometimes Shield games aren't all they are cracked up to be, eg weather/contrived results/ perceived drop in Shield standard. I think he will learn a lot from from the exposure in the top flight and even just being with the squad.

Keep in mind its only two T20's and 3 ODI's, the T20's I consider to be relatively meaningless and if the series is on the line heading into the third one dayer I cant see either Pattinson or Cummins being selected and neither will be picked ahead of Johnson, Lee, Bollinger or Doherty.

At least in the Shield they get a definite, sustained bowl, both of these guys are absolute babies in the scheme of things, Pattinson has 6 first class matches and Cummins has 3. These guys need to bowl in match conditions, I cant see it happening in South Africa.

Good win by the Australian side today despite the stutter towards the end.
                    Cummins took 3 wickets.

Nice win and a nice partnership between Ponting and Clarke to get the Aussies over the line in the one day match over night. Match reduced to 29 overs after rain. Cummins and Johnson both took 3 wickets each.
