    Ponting retires

Ricky's calling time on a great career, some amazing stats and the best Aussie batsman I've ever witnessed, not to mention Australia's most successful captain.

The raw numbers themselves are phenomenal:
167 Tests brought 13366 runs at an average of 52.2 with 41 tons

375 One Day Internationals brought 13704 runs at an average of 42, with 30 tons at the excellent strike rate of 80.

He has been in my mind the best Australian batsman since Bradman, it has been a pleasure watching him. For all the controversy about captaincy, man management and retirement... that pull shot was a thing of beauty.

(Guys lets keep this thread away from the talk about him going on too long or the timing of it, feel free to use the other thread for that but lets pay tribute to a champion here)

Ricky Ponting is a true champion of the game and at his peak was one of the best batsmen in Cricket. All the best for him in what he goes on to do next.

Been very lucky to witness an Aussie batsman as good as Ponting(behind only the Don). Thanks for the memories Punter.

Heads and shoulders my favourite batsman to watch. His 2000-2010 decade - he was a batting machine. And such a tough competitor.

One of the games all time greats. Will never forget his 2003 World Cup final hundred. One of the greatest knocks ever.

Ponting has been one of the world's greatest cricketers and we have been lucky enough to watch him at his peak over a long time.

Lets hope the boys do the right thing and win the Perth Test.

                An outstanding player.

The finest exponent or the pull shot and the best player of spin off the back foot ever.

Often forgotten was his excellence as a fieldsman either in the slips or at short cover.

Hopefully Ricky Ponting can go out on a high and get a century.

Just a sensational fieldsman. Has there been any better?

Im sure people will put up nominations such as Jonty Rhodes but how many have excelled at both fielding and batting?

He was one of the most natural fieldsman but I think Ponting would be a bit ahead of him

To think there was a time when we had Ponting, Clarke and Symonds in the field all at the same time.

Between them they barely missed a run out.

Its been a privelige to watch Ponting throughout his career, from the ambitious yet troublesome young Tasmanian to an all time great of the game. A truly remarkable career.

Would Ponting be up there with Bradman as one of the all time greats. Obviously Bradman batting average of 99.94 will most likely never be beaten and he'll always be the best.
