Re: World Cup thread.
Go Australia! Going to be a huge challenge for us with Spain, Netherlands and Chile in our group. All we can ask for is that we put in the best effort we can. If we don't try then that will be the biggest disappointment."Footscray people are incredible people; so humble. I'm just so happy - ecstatic"Comment

Re: World Cup thread.
Do you think it's worth adding Van't Skip to the coaching panel? He has a deep understanding of European football in general and the Dutch in particular. That sort of knowledge could be really useful against Spain and The Netherlands. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

Re: World Cup thread.
I would avoid doing that though, our focus needs to be inward at the moment to make the team competitive against any top 32 opponents.Comment

Re: World Cup thread.
I'm more disappointed by Schwarzer's retirement as in the last week he's shown he's still world class(hoping he keeps it up tomoz morning).
In all honesty Holman's not in our best 11 and was stinking it up at AV before he headed east. The curse is dead.Comment

Re: World Cup thread.
This World Cup for the Socceroos is about transition. The Golden generation (Kewell, Cahill, Viduka, Schwarzer, Neill, Emerton) are gone. The A League has been in place for nearly 10 years so its a chance for players to showcase themselves on the world stage and mportantly gain some experience. We will lose all 3 Group games and probably get slaughtered in at least one of them (the Dutch), but from that a few guys will emerge as the core for the next Asian Cup tilt and the next World Cup tilt.
One thing that worries me is that there are hardly any Aussies playing top flite Europen football. Jedinak for Crystal Palace, Schwarzer at Chelsea, the keeper at DOrtmund but aside form that no one else is really playing in a quality league and our keepers aside, none are playing in a top rated team. The cupboard really is bare.Comment

Re: World Cup thread.
World cups coming, sleep will be at a premium. I'm excited already!
Australias my number one by a long way but I dont like our chances of picking up a single point. I have English and Italian heritage so they are my go to teams, however, I love watching Portugal, Spain, Brazil and the argies. The dutch are always good too. The croats play hard.
Special interest in the liverpool group in England and Suarez this year. I expect Luis to make a name for himself this world cup be it hero or villian.
Would love to be in Brazil! What an atmosphere.Comment

Our campaign slogan:
Socceroos: Hoping our way into history
Obviously we have no money for a decent slogan after our losing bid video and paper bags of cash.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
